Adam Fedor of GNUstep Says Stuff 166

JgiSaw writes "GNUstep provides an Object-Oriented application development framework and tool set for use on a wide variety of computer platforms. It is based on the original OpenStep specification provided by NeXT, Inc. (now owned by Apple and endorced into MacOSX). OSNews is hosting an interview with Adam Fedor, of the GNUstep project, where Adam mentions among others that GnuStep has support for the MacOSX API too, which will make porting MacOSX applications to Linux much easier."

The FSF's Bradley Kuhn Responds 370

Last week you asked Bradley Kuhn, VP of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) questions about working with RMS, his views on software freedom, and much more. He's answered at length below, on everything from becoming a saint to the "web app loophole," perl, and the next iteration of the GPL.

GNUstep Keeps Marching 4

navindra writes: "While KDE and GNOME often grab the headlines, other projects are silently making progress. Dennis Leeuw tries to make sense of the situation in this interesting GNUstep article featured on LWN Daily."

GNUstep On LinuxFocus 72

Dennis Leeuw writes "Linux focus has a very good article on GNUstep and it's status. It might have been a long time in the making, but they seem to pull it off." GNUstep doesn't get the attention that some of the window managers' get, but I think the diversity of the desktop interface is one of the more fun aspects of open source.

Why Are Modern X11 Tookits Not Written For Xt? 10

Vinodh D Rajan asks: "Being fed up with the disparate look and feel among the Linux toolkits and incompatibilities between them, I recently started studying the user interfaces available under Linux, something I called The Unified Linux Desktop. For this I started studying how GTK+, QT, FLTK, GNUstep, Motif, Xaw, etc all work. The more I studied them, the more I wondered as to why modern tookits are not written against the Xt standard, since it is the one that has been standardized. Since Motif has been so successful, why not spend effort trying to improve it and provide a common framework for component development, instead writing incompatible toolkits?"

What Did Objective-C Do Wrong? 15

Dixie_Flatline asks: "Okay, I really don't understand it. I've looked at C++ and C# and I don't understand what ObjC must have done wrong to be losing out to the likes of them. It's got only a few syntax additions to C, but is actually fully object oriented, unlike C++. My only hope for ObjC right now are the GNUstep project (which really isn't high profile enough) and MacOS X (which is fine with me...it's like having my NeXT resurrected). But why hasn't ObjC just caught on on its own?"

In Search of the NeXTSTEP Look 18

GUNTHER asks: "I've fallen in love with the NeXTSTEP style interface. I would love to have a NeXT machine but they are rather hard to come by these days, so I have been looking for programs and libraries to emulate its look and feel. I am familiar with GNUStep, Afterstep, TKStep, and GTKStep but what else is available to emulate the NeXTSTEP look and feel?"

Quickie Fu 100

b12arr0 sent us a link to a quick little GNOME article. An anonymous reader wrote in to say that GNUStep.org has had a major makeover. Nice to see that project still alive and kicking. chrisd wrote in to say that VA has made its first acquisition: ElectricLichen, possibly best known to most of us as the Beer Hike guys. OGL wrote in to give us the heads up to Linux Game Tome for info about a a work-in-progress video game starring Tux in a 3D environment. The screenshots alone are unbelievably cool. Brian Gue wrote in to tell us of a new a beer called Fubar. Why not fubeer? snorkel sent us a link to yet-another-dancing-animal-page. This is the Cow Dance Finally Vik Olliver wrote in with the most impressive Linux Fan act I've seen (narrowly edging out the dude at LWCE with the Tux hairdo). It is of course, Husband and Wife matching Tux Tatoos. My largely tux based fashion sense pales by comparison.

Redhat to support KDE developement 372

belbo writes "According to a notice on KDE's news page Redhat is now funding two KDE developers in their efforts to port KDE to the upcoming open-sourced QT 2.0." Indeed KDE 1.1 is apparently in Red Hat 5.9. Furthermore, Moritz Moeller - Herrmann tells us that our ubiquitous friend Kalle Dalheimer announced to the KDE-dev list that " KDE was awarded "Innovation of the Year 1998/99" in the category software at a Ziff-Davis event in relation to the CeBIT fair. The other finalists were Lotus eSuite and Microtest Visual CD. This award is a great achievement of the whole KDE team! Congratulations to all of you! We will provide scanned pictures of the award and other items we got (like posters and stickers) as soon as possible on the KDE web site." Finally, Linux Today has a brand new look and is sporting interviews with people of the Linux community. In one of them, Corel CEO Micheal Cowpland reveals that Corel's open-source GUI will be based on KDE. Please folks, don't let this good news bring on a flame-war. Many people want to choose which desktop suits them best: GNOME, GNUStep, KDE are all worthy contenders.

Interview with Alfredo K. Kojima 29

BadlandZ writes "The UnOffical GNUstep site is featuring an Interview with Alfredo K. Kojima in it's new SlashDot-like [GNUstep newsWire]; news section. On a side note, I recently decided to publicly release a little essay I wrote on why GNUstep isn't just a DE for anyone who cares for a "non-technical" read on why GNUstep is a bit more expansive in design than say, KDE or Gnome. Just incase anyone cares... ;-) "

Should GNUStep and GNOME work together?

Jim Dennis (The Answer Guy from the Linux Gazette) has written an editorial at Linux Today suggesting that GNUStep and GNOME work together. Has anyone noticed we are getting three environments: KDE, GNOME and GNUStep, each based on a particular variant of C (C++, C, Objective C)? Since GNUStep and GNOME are GPL'd, collaboration between them would be simple on the Licensing front. update Here's some reaction from the unofficial GNUStep guys.

WindowMaker Naming Fun

Christopher Barry wrote in to tell us that there is apparently some not-so-fun stuff occuring with the WindowMaker name. I've attached a message that Alfredo posted to the WM mailing list. The gist of that is that WM will probably start being GSWM (The GNUstep WindowMaker) to keep things clear.

GNUStep Releases Code!

We wondered if it would happen, but Jani Halme just wrote in and told me it did. The GNUStep project has released v0.5 of their very exciting package. It's great to see code froming from a source that obviously has a lot of good stuff going for it. Snag the program from the web site or gnu.org.
