If you were watching SpikeTV at all last night, you probably saw the 5 minutes the network spent on the E3 Critics Choice awards. Gamasutra has a complete list of the winners available. Some winners for this year: "Best of Show - Spore, Best Hardware/Peripheral - PlayStation 3, Best Console Game - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Best Handheld Game - Nintendogs, Best Fighting Game - Soul Calibur III"

    • I like the way a PS3 game gets 'best graphics.' When has ANY game lived up to the pre-release graphics? Never?
        • What I was saying: Games *always* have great graphics *before* they are shipped.

You are claiming that every PS2 E3 demo has been surpassed by current shipping games...is that the *same* game that was demoed?
        • Every PS3 E3 Demo was prerendered.... and not on a PS3.

Ooh heres some pictures of what it might look like.

bullshit, and they won best hardware for *that*

So MS showed demos running on "underspecced" dev kits, PS3 showed prerendered "this is what it might look like" demos. Nintendo didn`t show anything.

Christ I'm surprised they didn`t hand the best hardware prize to the Phantom...
          • Epic showed UT2007 in realtime on the PS3. Of course it was machinima but at some point the guy went into ghost mode with time stopped to show the people around and prove that it wasn't prerendered. OTOH I'm not sure if the PS3 really did that much better than the X360.
            • But among other problems, the UT2007 wasn't actually running on the PS3 videochip (which doesn't exist outside of a computer simulation right now). Epic has also said their code doesn't really take advantage of the Cell yet, so what the hardware demo was showing is a bit of a mystery. I think it was probably an underutilized Cell hooked up to a Nvidia SLI rig, since that is the kind of performance level Sony is promising.
    • Spike TV broadcast this, but they are not responsible for handing out the awards, it is still fine to think that they are ridiculous.

The awards were actually awarded by these people: http://www.gamecriticsawards.com/ [gamecriticsawards.com]
  • The 5 minutes spent covering this was FAR deeper and much more timely than anything on G4. If Spike wants to venture to a VG channel, at least it won't be G4.

    • Intersting because the male host was one of the cycle of hosts (from the pool of potential hosts) at G4. So they're all probably in cohoots with each other; Spike's coverage won't be very different from
      G4's
    • You didn't watch the VGA's or that Ultimate Gamer show that went on after it, did you...

    PS3 Best Of Show?

    Obviously the critics are from:

    Duh! Magazine
    No Shit Sherlock Magazine

    and other such prestigious periodicals...

You now, far be it from me to call myself a MS fanboi... but the PS3 winning Critics Choice Award for best hardware? Come on! There were no PS3's there. There were no playable games on it. etc.

At least MS had demos (playable in some cases, others were played by MS people as demos) running on Apple G5 towers (development kits) to show what the games were supposed to be like.

The PS3 was all hype and fluff. The Revolution (which I am looking forward to), was a no show, basically. At least MS had Xbox 360 (worst console name EVAR) specs down, demos running, etc. As far as the next gen of consoles is concerned, MS was the only player ready to step up to the plate.

Now, if this gamble of launching early will pay off for them, well, only time will tell.

I really have to agree with you on this one. If they were giving the award based on expectations you might be able to give the nod to the PS3 instead of the Xbox 360, but otherwise the only clear winner could have been the Xbox 360. While I'd personally give the nod the the Revolution, I feel it should be disqualified largely on the grounds that it wasn't there and we still don't know much about it.

The Xbox 360 may not have been running, but it was the closest thing to running. Apparently, the graphics card for the PS3 isn't even done yet, so anything other than the prerendered stuff they showed us is an impossibility. In an sense, they were as absent from the event as Nintendo, but chose to try and fool everyone by making it appear as if they actually had something. I also recall Sony saying that the footage they showed was not prerendered (a lie) and there was some controversy over it.

Because the other two consoles weren't even there, I don't see how you couldn't give it to the Xbox 360 even if you felt it was undeserving.

  • Best Graphics for a cgi movie from a game that doesn't exist. Great reporting guys! Best Hardware from a console that they didn't even show once (Maybe the demo's were running on a cell but it sure as hell wasn't a PS3 as it doesn't exist yet). I think spike TV needs to pull their nose out of Sony's ass.
  • Just goes to show... (Score:3, Informative)

Only at E3 can a peice of hardware that isn't even running win Best Hardware/Peripheral. I guess the bevelling on the mock-up was just that good. Sheesh!
