Smash Bros Brawl Creators Hint at Sonic

Posted by Zonk on Sun Aug 20, 2006 08:20 AM
from the sey-gah dept.
Wowzer writes "Nintendo hopes that Solid Snake's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii will encourage other publishers to allow their characters to join the Smash Bros. line-up, and is already actively negotiating for the rights to include at least one or two other non-Nintendo character. The plot thickens when Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto say that 'Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog is the character that Smash Bros. fans have requested the most.' This begs the question, which non-Nintendo characters are most likely to appear?"

[+] Super Smash Brothers Wii, Featuring Solid Snake 292 comments
mcc writes "In a surprise news conference this evening, Nintendo unexpectedly revealed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, and released a promo video of the title. Smash Bros. Brawl will feature online play; a Nintendog item that blocks your view of the playfield by jumping up on the screen and demanding to be petted; bizarre Dragonball Z style superattacks; your choice of traditional Gamecube or motion-sensing Revmote control; and new characters in the form of Samus (without the suit), Meta Knight, Kid Icarus (!), and... Konami's Solid Snake, complete with a cardboard box he hides in. The only bad news is despite earlier reports it would be a launch title, Smash Bros. Brawl will not be out until 2007."

  • If anything, this will give the old sega fanboys a chance to beat up on Mario with Sonic.
    • Reinact the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny [ultimateshowdown.org] by having Mario battle Sonic

      • No matter how he ends up, it'll still give them an outlet to release some pent up frustration form the Genesis/SNES console wars, even if it is a bittersweet release, since they'd be playing on a Nintendo console.
        • I'm not sure why Sega would be angry over the Genesis/SNES feud. After all, it was the time when Sega was most successful. They went from almost no marketshare to a close 2nd. The only ones who could have lost something in that feud was Nintendo (as it was the established leader). Their later problems were largely internal.

Yeah, there's so much bad blood between Sega and Nintendo that Nintendo had Sega develop the Gamecube F-Zero title! Those two companies sure do hate each other.
      • Why would it have to be exclusive rights? Couldn't Sega just authorize and supervise the use of the Sonic character for that one game?

Master Chief! Yeah, like that would happen.

Seriously tough, how about someone from the Street Fighter series, but the baby version of the character, not the grown up one, which were showcased in some jewel Street Fighter based game.

Please, NOT a Final Fantasy character, especially Sephiroth, Cloud or Vincent. Those characters have been showcased in other games enough.

Seriously tough, how about Mega Man? He is similar to Samus tough gameplay wise, unless you have combos that allow him to change his style? That would make him pretty unique.

Or, even tough he is not a video game character, maybe Samuel "The Man" Jackson? He's badass enough for this yet doesn't take himself seriously.

    Pyramid Head from Silent Hill.
Would love seeing him vs Princess Peach.
  • I'd like to see the guy from Altered Beast. Not sure I ever knew any names from that game, though.
  • How about Simon Belmont? Wario, too.
  • A few years ago, a few friends of mine and I came up with a list of Sega Characters we'd like to see in Smash Brothers. Unfortunately, Sega doesn't exactly have the multi series character lineup that nintendo has, so we were a bit pressed. Here's the list, though.
    Sonic
    Tales
    Knuckles
    Dr. Robotnick
The two guys from Altered Beast

Megaman characters would be a great addition to the game as well, although I'm not sure how much they count as Sega, as I think the last MegaMan game was realeased for the PS1/2

I wouldn't mind seeing Leeroy Jenkins in there. . . maybe the cast of FF1, Fighter, BlackMage and Ninja would be pretty awesome. Again some of Capcom's characters would be pretty sweet, someone mentioned Gem Fighter SD style chars. . .In Fact, I wouldn't mind seeing Nintendo, Capacom, and SNK, to collaberate, like maybe making the "funny, non serious" Smashbros style, then the more serious Capcom VS SNK VS Marvel kind of thing.

This hasn't been said in this article, but there are some rules about adding third party characters :
      1. The character must have appeared on a Nintendo console in the past.
      2. Characters from manga/anime/cartoons that where made into a game are excluded (so no dragonball, xmen or spongebob characters for example, but sonic, which was a game character before he got his cartoon may be included).
  • It would be great if Sonic was in there, like EGM 'predicted' [wikipedia.org]...
they say EGM fooling around with Sheng Long [wikipedia.org] led to the character of Akuma being added to SF2 Turbo.
  • http://samusnaked.ytmnsfw.com/ [ytmnsfw.com]

(No, it's not really Samus naked. Just a bit of bad language.)

I'd like to see them include some more Pokemon characters. Maybe have a Zangoose (would be a great speedy brawler) or a Farfetch'd/Marowak who would use a club and a boomerang style attack system.

Maybe even include some Digimon (Bandai arn't too harsh with their licencing) where you digivolved every time you beat another player. That way if you could rack up say 4 kills you would become quite powerful and instead of all going at it suddenly you'd be the main target.

If we're talking game characters (even though the above have been in more games than a lot would even realize) I'd like to see Bomberman (old school) included, with alternative skins to include the Punk, cowboy and maybe the female bomber from 3.

A Koopa troopa would be cool, they could even include a variety of shells on a level, so you can change your powers by jumping into them (Use the mario world system for this, it's simple and everyone knows whats going on).

What I would really like to see expanded though is the maps. Melee was full of small maps where you had no real tactics other than to spam your best moves if you played more than 1 on 1. Where as some larger maps like Hyrule Castle would make for a weapon change.

But then I suppose my "real" hope is they include some of the Mana series. Even if it's only making a kameo where Rabites appear in some level.

First, she's from a second-party game, so it doesn't really break the whole "Nintendo characters" thing.

Second, she would use the SFAdventures staff as her weapon, which could work pretty well. It can be her jump boost (using the rocket part), it can shoot some sort of beam, it can shoot fire and ice, it can be used to hit people with.
