Resident Evil 5 Not A 360 Exclusive

Posted by Zonk on Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:28 AM
from the yet dept.
Next Generation reports that recent rumours about the exclusivity of Resident Evil 5 are incorrect. So says Capcom, anyway, trying clear up its relationship with Microsoft. The two companies have become increasingly 'friendly', with titles like Dead Rising and Lost Planet given the 360 some popular exclusive titles already. From the article: "'Just to be clear, this is a multiplatform simultaneous launch on PS3 and Xbox 360.' ... The status of Resident Evil 5 has been clouded in mystery over the past several months. The game was featured at Microsoft's X05 event and at E3 2005, but it didn't make an appearance at this year's E3 in May, or at Tokyo Game Show 2006 this month."

Resident Evil Wii is supposed to be released about the same time, and will be similar, but different, and exclusive to the Wii.
      • The game will be called Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, and will take place in four different chapters. The four chapters will take you through previous RE titles, including RE1's mansion, RE2's police station, RE3's Raccoon City, and RE4's village. Each chapter will have two playable characters, with the ability to unlock more.

Gameplay wise, it is reportedly a lot like RE4, with the Wiimote triggering the over-the-shoulder view, and firing being done with the nunchuck controller. As for the story, e
        • That sounds even better than 'Resident Evil Wii'
Is this Nintendo stepping into the survival horror genre ?
          Are we playing Peach ?
It could be great.. you start with a fry pan knocking your way through those nasty zombies until you find the umbrella (much more effective) but then zombies get nastier and you will need Mario and his double-jump shoes to stomp them and...
I could play that if you can swing the umbrella swinging the wiimote but I'm not too sure the fans of the series will apreciate.
        • Ohhh.....that's hot, we can play 4 simultaneous episode in one Wiivd...hohohoho, do you like my pronunciation of dvd? Wiivd!! Definitely another point for me to buy Nintendo Wii...

The Wii is getting it's own exclusive Biohazard game called Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles. It spans the first four titles, and you are able to play as many of the series most iconic characters (Leon, Jill, Hunk, Wesker, Ada and more..). The mechanics are supposed to be similar to Biohazard 4's over the shoulder view, but the Wiimote will be used to aim your weapon.

Not a whole lot is known about the game because it was only recently announced. One thing that has been mentioned is that each character will have two weapons each, like the Mercanaries game from Biohazard 4 (which will be returning). Jill has a pistol and rocket launcher, Leon a Pistol (Red 9 I hope) and shotgun, and Ada the TMP and rifle.

There was a post about it on The Magic Box maybe a month ago. No screenshots yet either.
      • Here's a link [wikipedia.org]. It looks like someone's been working pretty hard on the wiki page.
      • I'm getting the impression that a number of third party developers had somewhat written the Wii off initially, and have since changed their tune post E3.

Between Nintendo's good showing there, and Sony's lukewarm reception, I know I'd sure as hell want a few Wii titles if I were a third party shop.
        • They've got exclusive titles on the way from Capcom, SquareEnix, Sega, Namco, and Konami. It doesn't get much better than that, that's all the biggest publishers in Japan. Much better than their last two launches.
      • I hope we get the name Biohazard in the UK (where so far all the games have been Resident Evil titles) I always did think it sounded better and so far all the games have related more to a biohazard than some kind of "evil"...

Using the wiimote with RI is just wrong. It completely ruins the core gameplay element of frantically spinning in circles while trying to run away and/or shoot zombies. What's next? A playable Tomb Raider game? That way lies madness.
        • It sounds like the main difference between this and Biohazard 4 is that you aim with the Wiimote. You'll still have to stop firing to turn around, so zombies will be able to sneak up on you.
          • Why would you have to stop firing to turn around? What about the nunchuck?
            • Have you played Biohazard 4? While you're aiming (holding R) Leon can't move and is completely vlunerable to attacks from behind. You can do a quick 180 turn with Down + B, while not in aiming mode.

It would really ruin the sense of claustrophobia if you could spin around while aiming, so I presume the controls in Umbrella Chronicles will be similar to those in Biohazard 4.

It would also destroy the sense of realism. In reality people don't just run around and shoot at the same time like in almost every first person shooter, aiming is something that takes time and concentration if you actually want to hit something, it just doesn't work while running around and I am very happy that ResidentEvil forces

                • almost every first person shooter? huh? you mean counter-strike, right? I haven't played an FPS where you actually sit still to aim, but I'm talking from a Quake / slightly pro-quake background, here. there are plenty of fast paced FPS games.
      • Suhweet! Is there any chance at all we'll see multiplayer (internet or otherwise)? RE4 rocked in Singleplayer, but I thought it desperately needed a multiplayer mode, as that would have been shit tons of entertainment.
        • The Biohazard Outbreak series is multiplayer. Outbreak 2 for PS2 is playable online and you can move and shoot at the same time (blasphemy). I'm sure Capcom has plans to continue the series.
    • But the PS3 is soooooo awesome that you'll WANT to work that overtime to afford it.
      • Yeah, I did a ton of that - one week I worked 120 hours. I was really looking forward to my paycheque until I realised I was salaried... =(
  • RE5 will be launched to Wii. RE4 was a great success at GameCube plataform !! I will use the Wiimote to fire the rifle !!!
    • Or as Elmer Fudd would say:

"I will use the Wiimote to fire the wiiifle!!! You wascaly wabbit!"
  • I recall RE5 being announced for the 360 and PS3 right on day 1.
  • I need my RE-Wii!!!
