World of Warcraft Expansion News 67

I was waiting for more news on it before posting, so I imagine some of you are already aware of the screenshots and news of the first World of Warcraft expansion out there in the wild. Voodoo Extreme has the highlights, and Joystiq is carrying some beautiful screenshots. So far the three features that have my eyebrows raised are: Blood Elves as a new playable Horde race, a high level Flying Mount for the Outlands, and (most exciting) cross-server Battlegrounds. This last would be a huge boon for the currently questionable organized PvP play, and I really hope they swing it.

The "expansion notes" circulating the internets are just too unrealistic for any single expansion. Anyone with half a brain can see that.

    • Adding a new class, specifically for killing casters - they haven't even balanced the current classes yet, why add another to the mix?
    • 100 player instances with horde and alliance cooperating - puh-lease
    • level cap rise to 75 - don't make me laugh, can you say "31/31/4 builds"? That would totally destroy all class balance changes made in the last 9 patches.

    • I have found the best source of information about the expansion to be at:
      http://www.wowguru.com/the-burning-crusade.php [wowguru.com]

They have some pretty good information that seems fairly plausable. The page seems to be updated regularly with the latest rumors/information.

...did you even bother clicking on the link?

      - NO new classes, just two new races
      - level rise to 70, not 75

Doesn't mean the posted link is automatically 100% correct... but honestly, did you even read it?
      • ...did you even bother clicking on the link?

Yes, I read the links. Two weeks ago. From that source and a dozen other places. And I've been fighting off idiots who believe every rumour they read since.

The source just changed their story near the time it was posted on Slashdot, so not my fault. It also proves the reliability of their data. Plus the magazine source they're referring to has been proved fake by the editors of said magazine. Get a grip, wait 2 weeks and let's see who's right. Mr increased-l

    • Who said anything about a new class? The linked article said "no new classes" if you actually bothered to read it. Rumors don't count, and have nothing to do with the actual news. That said however, a new class for the Blood Elves would make sense in the way you described, Spellbreakers..

Haven't heard anything of a 100 man instance with Horde and Alliance cooperating either, again, you're pulling rumors from different sources entirely which does not pertain to this at all.

      • Naga maybe?
      • That'd be great, ANOTHER class built entirely to kill us Mages to add to the already existing Rogues, Druids (other than Moonkin), and Shamans (glad they're on my side). What I'm hoping is that they finally get around to the Hero Classes that were listed on Blizzard's In Development page for so long. Perhaps a Hero Class that 60 casters can move to, one for warriors, and one for the in-betweens. I REALLY, really doubt the Blood Elves will be the race, though. They just look WAY too much like the existin
    • Ok I am not able to visit any of the links from work "silly firewall and all" but I agree that it would not be all these things mentioned. I think that if they do raise the max level to something other than 60 that these levels will be more linked to a hero class/rank or something of the sort. They may also be normal levels but minus the talent point with each level. The latter will not mess with the balance as much as a 31/31/4 distro of points.
    • Where in the links of the story are you getting ANY of this crap you're throwing out?

100 player instances? Hord and alliance cooperating? Where are you getting this from? Level 75? Where are you getting that they're opening Northrend and the Emerald Dream? Also, where the FUCK are you getting from the links above anything about a new class?

You call bullshit on the story? I call bullshit on the Meth you've been snorting.
      • Just because you read the article linked in the story doesn't mean you can't click on the links in the linked article. If you did, you'd have visited this webpage [gamona.de] and you'd know what parent was talking about regarding Northend, 100-men large instance, Emerald Dream and the new class.
        • I checked all the links, I don't see that anywhere attached to the article. If it's there it's buried pretty deep, and it doesn't related to the topic article. (They contradict each other.) So what is said there does not apply to this discussion.

Honestly though.. If he had just linked to that or noted the contradictions, that would have been one thing.. He just sounds to be blowing steam however.
          • The 100-man instance northrend/emerald dream/etc stuff is BS. About a month ago someone started circulating 'expansion notes' that were a WoW fanboy's wet dream. Full enviroment interaction, massive new content, new realms that were expansion-only to take advantage of it, several new races, etc etc etc.
      • Where in the links of the story are you getting ANY of this crap you're throwing out?

I read the exact same links a few days ago (things do exist before Slashdotting, you know) and it said all those things I refuted - it seems they changed the article. Which gives a nice feel to the reliablity of their sources.

    • I cringe a bit seeing this modded 0, troll. Too bad my modpoints just expired.

I realize the link no longer makes any mention of a new class and a level 70 vs level 75 level increase. But, this morning, before this story was posted to slashdot, this exact link did claim the level cap would be raised to 75 and that there would be a new class (and at that time, there was no mention of a new profession). It has been changed since this morning, which should give you an idea of how much stock to put in this sort
      • Just because we currently get talent points all the way to 60, does not mean that we have to keep getting them with a possible level raise to what ever level. We do not get the first talent point until level 10 anyway.

The Outland is one of the new areas being added with the expansion. If you did some crafty exploring on the test server when they were up for the 1.8 test, some/all of the area was added. There are no monsters yet in these areas, but they are there. A few of my guild members took screenshots of the area, and it looks pretty cool. When he took a screenshot of where he was on the world map, he was south east of the western continent. And this was back on October 8th or so.
  • If this expansion information is indeed true, then it will just unbalance everything all over again (not that things ae balanced now. That's just so damn hard to do.) A flying epic mount? Come ON. As awesome as that'd be, their game just doesn't support 3D exploration. If anything it'd be a 2.5D freedom mount.

At least I can understand why the Blood Elves go to the Horde. The Horde is a collection of outcasts, and as such, that is where the Blood Elves would go.

    • Fly mounts will only be usable inside of one of the new instances being added. It seems that the instance will be very expansive, and moving around it by walking would take a very long time.
    • They talking about flying mounts in Outland only, which from what I've gathered could consist of many floating islands. Obviously, a flying mount would be kinda needed to get around.
  • Glad I'm not playing WoW if those are considered "beautiful screenshots".
    • No kidding. I've been looking for additional material to push my graphics card through recently and I was finally going to give WoW a try, so the "beautiful screenshots" comment caught my eye. If that's even just plain average looking for the game, I think I'll pass.
      • If you play games just to push your graphics card to the limit, then maybe you aren't playing for the right reasons?
      • Those screens look like crap compared to how the game looks now. WoW is acutally really good looking with all the details maxed.

Even the screenshots on the offical WoW site don't always do it justice.
      • I play World of Warcraft and was just thinking about this today. Last night I installed Quake 4, which has some pretty amazing graphics and I got to thinking. While the Quake 4 (and Doom 3 for that matter) graphic technology is amazing, the art direction is surprisingly generic. Everything from the drop ship sequence to the interior of the human space ship was rendered very similar to Aliens.

        • Yeah, I was playing pong the other day and I don't think people quite catch on to the retro style of graphics in that game either. You're right it's not the number of polygons and realistic imagery, it's that distinctive look of pong. (sorry, I couldn't help but be sarcastic.) :) Seriously, I played World of Warcraft and it looks like a cartoon. How distinctive is that? There were times when I was playing my horde character and thought I was going to see the Road Runner and Coyote run by. And I kept m

Um, having cool graphics that make your video card heat up is what pc gaming is about? How about "fun"? Have you heard of that?

City of Villains is coming out soon, too. The original CoH saw a significant player loss when WoW came out, and I dare say they were banking on CoV to try to win some customers back. But given the choice of $50 for CoV or $30 for a WoW expansion, I know which I'd pick. Heck, even if they were released at the same price, I'd go with the WoW expansion.
    • by Anonymous Coward
City of Villains can be played as a standalone game, so those who didn't have City of Heroes and only wanted to play a villain only have to spend $50 for CoV, not $70-80 for both. Also there is no additional subscription fee for playing both games. Then there is the fact that CoV adds a lot of new zones, many new enemy factions (both hero and villain), and 5 new archetypes for villains to play that are not rehashes of the hero archetypes.
      • "5 new archetypes for villains to play that are not rehashes of the hero archetypes"

Not exactly rehashes - but many of the power sets are the same or similar. I mean you can have a bad guy shooting fire just as much as a good guy.
  • Giving horde pretty elves would totally destroy the balance in the game. As it is horde are overpowered as compared to aliance in no small part due to Shamen. The only thing the Aliance has going for it is that horde characters and lands are ugly and many people just don't like that. Give them nice pretty elves and all that changes. Unless they give us shamen, we in the aliance are screwed.

I think to properly balance, if they get Elves, we should get Tauren. Tauren are one of the most powerful races an
    • It's not just about prettyness. Most fantasy RPG players identify more with the "good guys"... even with Blood Elves going to Horde, they'll still be outnumbered heavily.

The whole reason Horde characters are overpowered is to
      (1) encourage people to play them
      (2) give them a leg up in massive PvP, so they can actually compete.

It frightens me that this was modded insightful.

First of all, appearance has nothing to do with balance. Some servers have Alliance outnumbering Horde, and others it's the opposite. Second of all, shaman are not that bad. They are no more 'overpowered' than Paladins. (and Paladins are an absolute bitch to kill) How are Tauren any more powerful than other races? They have warstomp, and a slight HP boost. OMG NERF. The backstory also firmly places them with the Horde. (Orcs saved their asses from the Centaurs)
      • No, Tauren definately would be better suited to be with the Human Alliance. Since the Humans are known as the most tolerant of all the races of Azeroth. Sure the Orcs saved them from the vicious centaurs, but the Orcs wouldn't be there in the first place if it wasn't for the Humans. /sarcasm

I'm calling B.S. on this expansion news. The Blood Elves are firmly allied with the Naga and Draeni, lead by Illadin. They would not betray Illadin after he saved them, and the Draeni would not be very kind to those wh
        • Corinthian from Suramar actually. (Tauren Hunter) Although I've kinda shelved him to play an undead priest named Irony. (Same server)

I think the flying mounts are only for Outland, which is being designed to accomodate them. (from what I've read) If this news is accurate (BE going Horde) I'll be very curious to see how they work it into the plot.
    • It's shaman, plural, shamans. And they're no more overpowered than the paladin is. One hybrid is defensive, the other offensive. In BGs a paladin can survive and hold a position long enough for his team to respawn because they're the only class that can reliably survive focus fire and still act. They're incredibly overpowered vs. the Shaman in PvE because totems only count for the current party, are restricted by range, and thus are tough to stack(as opposed to blessings). They have, by default, the be
      • sorry, but this is just not true. Shamans are superior in every aspect except one: they can only wear mail. The bubble shield doesn't boost a paladins surviveability in a *meaningful* way because in the 12 seconds their life is prolonged they can't accomplish anything at all. So it boils down to bubbling up when you need to heal. A shaman can do that much more conviniend with natures swiftness, and on a shorter cooldown too. Shamans heals are vastly superior, as it takes the paladin one whole second longer

    • Why would you quit the game over a level cap increase? That's a ridiculous statement. Besides, have you forgotten about the Hero classes they're working on? They were suppose to be there at WoW release but were delayed and have since been revamped and continuously worked on from what I hear.

Ten more levels isn't something to quit over.. Not saying I want the cap raised, I actually don't care at all, I just find such statements so.. absurd.
      • I'm not concerned too much about a level cap increase. It's the talent points that come along with it. You could nearly max out two talent trees with 61 points to work with. I'm a hunter and just thinking about a 30/31 BM/MM build makes me drool.
      • Quite a lot of time is spent grinding for level 60 armour, epic purple armour which if the level cap is increased will be deemed useless. Furthermore, all the instances are designed around this level 60 cap, if they wanted to raise the cap they would have done it much earlier.
        • Nah it's so wankers like me who don't have time to do 40 man raids will be able to 10 man MC at level 70. Then all of you who have been running MC and BWL for ages and are bored of it get to go tackle the new lvl 70 instances that require 40 man teams.
          Or something like that.
          • Or the inclination to be in a huge serious guild that can get the attendance numbers to do the 40-man high-end content. Which tend to invariably splinter and be full of "da drama." Nothing sucks worse than spending all that time and effort only to get jack for it when the guild splits.

My guild is gradually getting there by absorbing like-minded casual people, and we've successfully avoided things like DKP and the like thus far, but I wish they'd plug in more content for well-coordinated 5-20 man groups th
    • There are going to be 'FLYING FREAKING MOUNTS' for use in the Outlands. That's straight from the leaked Italian preview that was floating around the web last week. Check out World of War [worldofwar.net], probably the third or fourth news article down is the translated story from that mag.

It fits with what I've seen of the Outland so far, what they've built in the game.

Yes, the Outlands do exist in the game files, presently. They are located south-southwest of the eastern continent.

  • I've heard some sites mention that spellbreaker would be added as a new class, and am surprised more people aren't discussing the ramifications of that. I'm one to believe that spellbreaker might be included, just because it seems apparent blood elves are a new race and it would fit with warcraft lore. Not that you can play a sentinel either, but hey I'm just saying it's possible. =)

In general a melee class that's immune to and can redirect magical effects for their own benefit is a nice new monkeywrench to
  • I certainly hope the expansion just lets you go to outland and some of the locked sections. wowwiki has a list of unfinished areas on the current continents, and it would be a shame if we had to pay to go through a gate. Karazan's castle, for example, better be part of a patch, because a lot of us have been waiting for another undead instance to play through, and it's in the middle of the eastern kingdoms. I could imagine trying to gate and it would say "you didn't pay us $50, go away."
