City of Heroes Character Editor Available 24

1up reports that the amazingly versatile Character creator that City of Heroes players have enjoyed since launch is now available for free to download. You can't really do anything with the characters you create, of course, but it's still pretty cool. It's officially being released for the Korean launch of the game. From the article: "Not only does it include all of the game's hundreds of costume options, but auras and capes are available for screwing around with from the start, which is spiff if you want to see how they're going to look on your guy before going to all the trouble of getting him to level 30."

  • Wait a sec... Haven't they always said they wouldnt do something like this because of the time investment it would take to separate it entirely from the game?

SO THATS WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN UP TO!

    Thats why 'soon' took forever...
    • They've always had the character-design module as a separate package; that's one of the things they trot around to conventions, so they can have a computer dedicated to letting people play with the character designer, without having to worry about them actually creating a character and borking the game's configuration.
      • No, not always. During beta, and the 1st year (at least), people always asked the Devs to make the character creation program available outside of the game so that people could spec characters, etc. But Cryptic always said they couldn't because it would take alot of work to separate it entirely from the game engine.

My guess it was just done to appease the Korean market, because obviously the western market didnt have enough influence to get it out here 1st. Then again, NCSoft is a Korean company, and the
        • I've seen both the hero and villain costume designer programs standalone programs at booths NCsoft/Cryptic had at conventions, and been told the same thing -- that it would be too much work to separate it from the game -- while standing at the computer running the software. I wonder, though, if what they thought we were asking for was something that would let us go through the CoH/CoV character creation offline, and then upload a character into the game, instead of just a costume-design program almost exact

...unless you can rip off their heads and post 'em on a bottle rocket, it ain't playing Barbie.

    • My kids will love this, especially my son. It makes a nice contrast to my daughter's Barbie Princess dress-up game.
    • Just deal with only being able to download half as much porn for one day and you can get this easily. Geez, complain complain complain....

Oop, old news: they've been that way since inception.
  • anyone else got a green cast over the characters? I'd think it was some oddity of my graphics setup if it wasn't also coming across on the screenshots &c.
    • No problem here (BFG 7800 GTX on WinXP).

It probably is an oddity in your system and their just pulling the buffer off your video card and compressing it that way. Or, you character is actually green (green aura?).

Quite simply, the costume creator in CoH/V was the biggest surprise in the game.

Most folks I know that either participated in the beta or played in the game after it went Gold, were blown away. Never before in a MMO have been been given such a wide range of choices. It wasn't unusual for most folks to get the game, sit down and think "Yeah, whip up a character in 5 minutes and away I go!" An hour later, they were still tinkering with their costumes. Sure, later on it took a lot less, but it wasn't hard to spend an hour just LOOKING at all the options, since you would tweak colors and patterns to see how it changed.

The biggest reason they could do this in CoH/V? The costume stays the same, regardless of "Enhancements" you obtain. With other games, your equipment/armor determines how you look. In CoH/V, it doesn't. Your costume is your costume, though you can alter it at various levels, as well as get auras and capes at certain levels.

Nobody else that I have seen has come close to offering new characters the ability to NOT be a cookie cutter. Your identity was YOU, not "ohh, I got this fancy breastplate! It's not an upgrade, but it sure looks cooler!" type stuff.

Other MMOs need to take note. It may be more difficult if you want armor to determine looks, but how many times have you found a super piece of equipment, and then put it an, and said "MAN, this is ugly!"??? I know some of the best equipment in WoW was uglier than sin. Anyone recall the "Do you want fries with that burger?" helmet that paladins had as part of their class armor? One of the meanest things I have ever seen in a MMO! I still laugh at that one.

It's cool that they released that to the general public at no charge. Try it, and you will see what I mean.

I really wish they would have released this sooner. It would have been a great advertising piece. I mean...people will spend probably a good hour messing around with this...and then not be able to use it....unless they purchase the game! I'm sure that would have led to many more customers for them.

Apparently the NCSoft legal types are taking a close look at this now. The guy who put together a guide to using it, including a registry tweak to make it run in English, has had to take down his guide - http://www.wrathgame.co.uk/WRATHArt/character_crea tor.htm [wrathgame.co.uk]

I wouldn't have thought the registry tweak was such a problem. I mean, if they didn't want it to run in English, they shouldn't have had English as the internal default that it uses if you use regedit to deny your windows account permissions on th
