Thanks Fast Thick Pants! Kind words on Slashdot are rarer than a Nexus 7 tablet so I'll take them over the device :-) I really did only spend a half hour on it so I would feel guilty if it went up against some of these logos that obviously took a lot more time. My vote went for Avrum Cohen's robot bugs, though. I used to write software for multi-agent systems in graduate school and I felt like this one was a great marriage of form and function -- on top of that it was one of the most tasteful gifs to me.
... but again, the pixel limit! Still a fun thing to do! Glad you enjoyed my logo!
When I was a kid I used to make tessellations non-stop of anything and everything. All you needed was graph paper.
One of my ideas that never worked out was to do a Back to the Future gif since that movie takes place in October but the number of pixels just wasn't enough to make meaningful digits on the display or do a DeLorian or anything. So I went this route instead. Also, I agree with other posters that my logo didn't quite mesh well with the background. What I would have preferred to do was complete like a 4x3 block of the logos (which would have made like a postage stamp size) and put a slightly thicker black border around that
