Fallout 3 In Development? 23

easychord writes "RPGCodex are reporting that J.E. Sawyer has sneakily or accidentally leaked Fallout 3 concept art onto the Interweb. After the disappointing non RPG spin-offs in the Fallout universe and the confusion around Black Isle's Lionheart having the working title of Fallout Fantasy, is Fallout 3 becoming a vaporware holy grail?"

I loved the original Fallout, but I wished it was larger. It was downright one-tracked and linear. But, the second one was so huge and so complicated it was like jumping from a vacuum into a nebula, or something like that. You get my meaning. I'm bad with analogies. Plus, the Temple of Trials was soooo hard unless you picked up useless skills to get through it. I hope the third one is like the first in its difficulty curve, but like the second in its divergence and multitude of weapons. I certaintly hope this isn't only smoke and mirrors, or a graphic-upped version of F2 like the Tomb Raider games. I'll be waiting for this to hit the shelves and then put myself behind the controls of an intelligence 1 strength 10 brute again :)
    • You can probably expect it to use accelerated graphics because Fallout Tactics used such. I just hope that if Fallout 3 does come out it will have LESS bugs. fallout 2 was very buggy, and still was after the patch release. of course, if you were addicted to fallout 2 like i was many summers ago you'd remember the terrible save/load times too. has anyone played fallout tactics? how were the loading and saving times in comparison to fallout 2?

I really hope that they keep the same sprite graphics, that is one of the things that made the game good, was the fact that MECHANICS took precidence over graphics and flash. The main reason I bought the series is that it was a good table-top engine.

I hope that they make the NPCs controllable during combat with the Tactics system, allowing me to control where my fat guy in a wife-beater shoots his Panzor or CAWS. The AI in Fallout2 was TERRIBLE, Vic (my npc of choice) really liked to target THROUGH my head.

Also I hope they better balance the game, so just picking high perception and agility isn't a true path to winning, everytime. If you want to win Fallout2 in under 30hours, simply tag Small Guns, Steal, and Energy Weapons, have over 8 perception, and over 9 agility. Poof. You 0wn. Make melee and hth more fruitful.

Oh... And we need more dogmeat.

(aside: I'm digging the Fallout Fantasy thing, my and my freind used to wish that Square and Black Isle would join forces, and make either Final Fallout, or Fallout Fantasy... Now through some Id into the mix, and you got Final Fallout Doom)
    • Heh, I always used to think they should have tuned down the unarmed combat in Fallout 2.

Why? It was a long time since I played it, but I think I did play one character who became a master at martial arts. I mean, this dude could kick the shit out of *anyone*.

You remember how the enemies could be thrown back hollywood-style by a particularly strong attack? Well, let me tell you (and I remember this because I always laughed out loud when it happened): I had several enemies literally fly out of the screen

It's really funny that you should mention the combat system of Fallout, I was just thinking about it earlier today while playing Arcanum (which is my RPG of choice until Fallout 3 arrives). I really like the way Fallout and Arcanum handle combat. You control one character, the rest sort of work on their own, or go by some really basic rules/orders that you give to them. If I wanted to play with every single character at once, I would buy additional mice for my computer and genetically engineer some new a

Fallout 2 was a fantastic game, and I really enjoyed playing through it. The one thing that really spoiled it for me though, was all of the glitches. I'm talking game essential items endlessly replicating and then disappearing here, and many other equally game-destroying things. Add this to the patches that, in my case, removed some glitches but added others (Yes I did install the correct patch) and you have quite a mess on your hands.

I'll be looking forward to Fallout 3, but this time, I hope Black Isle take the time to remove the bugs!
    • removed some glitches but added others

The classic one was the patch that invalidated your save games forcing you to start over. Thank god I was only a couple of towns into the game.

For those of you that need a Fallout fix now and like table top RPGs, there are pen and paper rules available at http://pnp.duckandcover.net/. They can be a bit cumbersome at times, but they seem to be pretty close to the rules from the computer games.
    • yeah.. I have actually tried the P&P game. I think it was actually good.

Of course it was different from the computer RPG, but the P&P version was better( since there was no glitches)
    • The Fallout rules were based off of GURPS [sjgames.com] and by the time Fallout was finally released, they made so many changes they could not release the game under the GURPS license.

I though the final rules in Fallout were so much better then GURPS anyway =)
  • ...Lionheart OR Fallout 3. Arcanum made a decent "filler" game until my quicksave randomly corrupted itself. I didn't feel like replaying the last 20 or so hours from my last hard save, so it's back on my shelf...

The one thing that I would like to see in Fallout 3 would be some expanded customizability for character graphics. It's not a major issue, but it would be nice to at least be able to select my hair color/length...

  • OK, this is weird. Check out the link to RPGCodex and click on the picture [duckandcover.net] there. Now look towards the left of the image at the icon for a TXT notepad file. It's titled "F**K THE DMV.txt"
You've gotta wonder....maybe this is a new Fallout 3 feature or something....

Black Isle recently released the editor for Fallout 2, as well as the scripts and script compiler. No doubt, there are some dedicated Fallout fans working on some new scenarios to play through.

For those interested, info on the editor can be found here at Black Isle's new Fallout page [blackisle.com]

The challenge is to somehow avoid making yet another game which devolves into manic packratting...

Even though I love these series, all these games, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, the TSR Gold Box series, devolve into micro-managing inventory. Should I take the sniper rifle or the laser rifle? Let's see multiply weight by probability I won't use it by my skill, etc.... Do I want to keep 100 necklaces I picked up, one of which might be magical, or the extra 5 full plate armors I can sell in town, or this sword I pulled off this boss? Aggh!

Maybe I'm just neurotic but these games always devolve into inventory micro-management and totally take away from the game. Like another poster, I typically try to make a "uber"-character just so I can avoid managing 5 extra characters. But then I end up attaining 5 "mule" characters just to hold the junk I collect on my missions...
    • These games have all the features necessary to become economies, and they become economies. No shock there.

It's like hearing someone talk about the good old days of M:TG, before people became interested in how much a card was worth. They were neat, yeah -- but they were immature. The mature version of the game is the one you end up with after the economy is created within it.

If your complaint is that the economy seems artificial...wait five years. They'll be just as realistic as the US economy, and

Yes, you are just neurotic. :) Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to do it. They give you the option, because some people have fun doing it, but-- and this is a tip for all games, not just Fallout-- don't do it if it's not fun!

I just left behind anything my character couldn't carry, and didn't have any problem with the game. Why wasn't it much harder for me, a non-packra
  • And then link to a game that's still in development? nice. And I loved Fallout Tactics.
    • I'm not the only one who thinks that Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel looks dissapointing.

Take a look at the promo movie on the site. The game could end up being good in many ways, but it just looks "wrong" to a fallout fan. Irrational, but you could say the same about Jar Jar Binks.

Fallout Tactics I can't really comment on. Played the demo and the gameplay didn't really grab me. Maybe I was spoilt by games like Jagged Alliance 2 and UFO Enemy Unknown. (think americans call it XCom)
  • I loved Fallout Tactics...but the other two weren't especially good in my taste....

I hope that Fallout 3 is either squad based like Tactics...or Icewind Dale 2....

Otherwise...they need to do something to make it more friendly than Fallout 1 & 2....
