Topps To Buy HeroClix Makers WizKids 11

Thanks to several readers for pointing to an official press release indicating that collectible strategy game maker WizKids has been bought by sports card maker Topps. WizKids are particularly well-known for their comic-book based HeroClix collectible strategy-game miniatures, which come in DC, Marvel, and Indy flavors, as well as other products in the Mage Knight/MechWarrior/Shadowrun lines - their well-known founder, Jordan Weisman, also founded FASA Corporation/Interactive, and helped create the AI web mystery game.

I play many WizKids games, and I'm also an active player of the FASA games that Wizkids has the rights to. I'm intimately familiar with almost all of the combined properties. Basically, what I'm saying is that if I find a stick of chewing gum in my next MW:DA booster, I'm gonna kill someone.
    • So now there is another reason that FanPro won't be able to get Shadowrun and Classic Battletech books out on time. Its not like WizKids cares except for the money they can rake in with clicky action figures.
  • Well, now I get what Hero Clix are. Somehow I always related them to Z-Cardz.

Turns out it's more like a turn-based game than a collectors things, seems odd for Topps to get something like that.

Well they have rare ones and common ones, a spiderman figure with a slow speed might be a bit more common than a spiderman with a fast speed, of course the faster one is more desirable in playing the game and for the fact that it's rarer

They're collectable in the same way Magic: the Gathering cards are, but not collectable in the way baseball cards are.
    • HeroClix (et al) are collectible in the same way that Magic the Gathering cards are: if you want to have, say, Green Arrow on your team, you need to buy the boosters until you find one with a Green Arrow figurine inside (alternatively, trade for one), rather than just being able to buy who you want.
      • Well that and some peeps just want them. I bought a case and then some and I didn't even play. I just loved the figures. Then I decided to really play and now it's better than ever. People collect toys and never open 'em up to 'play' with them, so it's the same idea.

How long until someone buys CheapAssGames? [cheapass.com]
  • I'm just sad that for the second time in as many years, I have to watch my favorite RPG (Shadowrun) trade hands. Though I wouldn't be too saddened if this brings back the once kewl Shadowrun TCG.

I myself play Clix all the time (game night tonight) and hope that TOPPS just gets more people into it and doesn't ruin the game....
  • And I thought having WizKids buy up part of the remanents (sic.) of FASA was bad.

/me misses FASA (Blue Valkyrie needs FASA badly)
