    So it looks like Doom 3 will have buggy multiplayer with blatant imbalances while never being patched. Hopefully the single-player game is a little better.

      Imbalances such as?

      Both sides have the equal weaponry...so...what's not balanced?

        Equal weaponry, yes. But the axis team has a serious advantage on all but one map. If you want to be a nice guy and use auto-team, more often than not, you'll end up on the camped-against allies.

        But more importantly is the bullshit XP system they've implemented. If you're playing a three-map campaign and you join towards the end, you're faced with opponents who have skills much higher than you. Don't even bother playing a six-map campaign unless you start from the beginning.

        Though the worst is really the class imbalances. Medics (after they get enough XP) are too powerful. Likewise for panzerfaust wielders. Weapons like the machinegun, mortar, and flamethrower are only useful in a few situations. This leads to a game of relatively few types of players going against each other in what ends up as boring and routine gunfights.

        This game could have been great. The maps and in-game communications are well thought out. The level design is excellent. But in the end the polish is missing. I can't complain though, since it's a free game. But I hope Splash Damage is capable of more than this if they're working on Doom 3.
        • Actually, only people who are still noobish think it is unbalanced. Once you understand the game, you thoughts might change. Or not. But either way, its the 3rd most popular online game at any given time, so despite your negativity, it seems to me they got alot right.

          The Axis only has a severe map advantage on Battery. And I think that is offset with a longer spawn time. Most of the other maps are close enough that the difference is meaningless. Mind you 'map advantage' can translate into 'my team sucks' quite easily.

          Axis static defense strategies can nearly always be defeated by the proper Allied class mix and proper teamwork.

    The longer you wait the higher the expectation is going to be, call me mr 'glass-half-empty' but i have this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach that this game will definatly not own all my base.

    It will be wicked to actually see a level and see what all the hype and build up has been but at the end of the day we will all buy it just becuase it is doom3 no matter how it plays.

    For gut never lies, and at the moment it is saying, leave work, kill the database and go home.

    I know this will be trolled but i just know it will suck after all this time

    What will it be running on is a good question. Will it be on an ATI or a Nvidia? Intel or AMD? What they choose will steer alot of purchases in the next few months as it will be iD's 'official' prefered platform.

    This also leads me to believe that the game might launch earlier than reports have said. If Carmack is willing to let kids play it in a sanctioned event, it must be near ready to ship. Could this mean that they will also be releasing a demo at the event? Perhaps only to attendees?

      Not necessarily. The code base is probably very close to done (if not 100% done), but that says nothing about the content. I imagine at this point that most of the work that remains is art, sound, and level design. Without a complete single player campaign, they could still let people try out the multiplayer.
    • It would seem a given that Id would stick with an ATI card for the lan. Maybe NVIDIA will try to take back some glory though, but something tells me that ATI isn't going to let it go easy, plus carmack has detailed how the radeon is better, I think, in some ways.

      Last year in the "Doom 3 Theatre" it was running on an ATI 9700, which had not yet been released then.

      But Carmack probably hasn't even picked an 'official' prefered platform. If you check his latest .plan update (yeah i know from a while back but still) he's watching both companies closely and keeping up to date with them both.

      They have been very friendly towards NVidia since.

      the retail game comes out. Remember Doom3? How
      about RTCW ET? They'll release a Doom3 multiplayer
      demo, and probably a single player demo that they'll
      watch like hawks for a good long time. That's how

  • A chance to play 4 player deathmatch? Wow! Seriously vanilla dm is pretty much dead these days because most people have grown tired of the rehashed gameplay. I think most people are looking forward to D3 on a new engine/atmosphere level. I think when D3 finally comes out it'll be hot at first but once the newness wears off and if it's only vanilla dm/ctf people will tire of it quickly.

    If the mod community comes out with the normal quake type mods then it will extend the life of D3. Rocket Arena D3, Instag

    • Honestly, having one giant frag fest with everyone getting splattered every 30 seconds is fun... to a point. I really miss good old four player deathmatch in Doom (and to a lesser extent, Doom 2). It had a slower, carefully paced game: hunting people down, conserving resources, and trying to outflank people to get the drop on them. The tension in these games would build and build, especially if your opponents knew you were weak or low on ammo. It made for an altogether different style of deathmatch game

    I have a feeling that the 4 player Doom 3 multiplayer is not going to be anything like the fast paced action of Wolfenstein: ET. If Doom 3 is about atmosphere, lurking down hallways, being scared out of your head, and since the multiplayer is limited to 4 players, I think that means it's going to be a very different experience.

    And in anycase, it's all BS until you actually play the damn game!
