Sony To Unveil PSX All-In-One Device Next Week 46

Thanks to Forbes/Reuters for the news that Sony will unveil its PS2-based, all-in-one PSX game device to the public next week. According to the article, "The PSX, which packs a TV tuner, DVD recorder, hard-disk drive, and the Playstation 2 game player into a single white box, will be unveiled at the CEATEC Japan 2003 industry show... near Tokyo, on Tuesday." Consumers may be seeing the PSX sooner, rather than later, since "Sony plans to launch the machine in Japan before the end of this year, and in Europe and the United States early next year", but unfortunately, "a spokesman for Sony said on Friday the exact launch timetable and pricing were yet to be decided."

That'll go good with all my white electronics... oh, wait.

    • Actually, a lot of Sony and other brand-name electronics are coming in silver or white nowadays in addition to (or instead of) black. Quite nice too, helps keep the room from getting depressing when you're Mr. Audiophile.

Does it have a kitchen sink too?

Seriously, this is interesting, but I can't help but wonder if there's a future in such appliance-like combo devices. Unlike the honest-to-god simple game consoles, which survive through their software, these seem to go obsolete much quicker.
    • and of course, it also sucks that when your PS2 breaks you no longer have a tv tuner, dvd player or tivo. All in one appliances suck because when one breaks, they all break.
      • Oh yes. I had a combo TV+VCR once. The VCR segment died. TV segment didn't work until we pulled the thing apart and unplugged every wire that went to the VCR segment. :)

I hope it will sports some decent video outputs... a VGA out for instance.

til now I tried a quite vast amount of adapter and conventer to connect the PS2 with a beamer but I couldn't match the image quality of a DC+VGA adapter.
    • til now I tried a quite vast amount of adapter and conventer to connect the PS2 with a beamer but I couldn't match the image quality of a DC+VGA adapter.

I've seen some really bad PS2 converters, but couldn't this also have to do with the fact that the DC supports 640x480 natively, while the PS2 does not?
    • I think you're completely missing the point. This isn't meant to be an 'everything to everyone' gadget, this is for home users who want another 'set-top-box' for their entertainment centre. Something to put on top of their reciever that looks nice.

It won't have a VGA port because this isn't for computer ubergeeks, it's designed specifically (and only) for the living room, and for the average non-geek/b>. In other words, if you want a VGA port, they're targeting not-you.

Eh, I doubt I'd ever get one. I'm really not impressed with the all in one appliances. They just never seem to be as good as if you buy all the components seperatly. Sure it might be more expensive and take up more room but there are advantages. One being quality but also is a greater number of features that are left out of the all in one devices.

For instance, my DVD player has many more features that the PS2/X-box DVD players have. Not only that I have never had a problem with my DVD player but have had issues with both game consoles' DVD players.

    • " I'm really not impressed with the all in one appliances. They just never seem to be as good as if you buy all the components seperatly."

Though in a normal situation I'd agree, but in Sony's defense, they've built these things before. I wouldn't be surprised if this came out decent.

Now, if they were just building a new game machine, then I'd be concerned.
  • But as previously said how will the features be. It seems with combo devices that all the functions are not as good as the devices separately.

Then again I trust most things that Sony comes out with. I really would not be surprised If all the features were up to par with a quality Sony DVD player, and of course sports all the features of the ps2 (minus the memory card slot).

All in all I already have a ps2 so its a waste of money to buy one in my situation. For all those people who don't have ps2`s yet and
    • You bring up a good point. You already have a PS2. A lot of people already have a PS2. So is there really all that much of a market for this? Not only that, this will more than likely be more expensive. Will that hurt sales? I'm not so sure this will be a big seller.
  • Does this mean it won't play PS1 games?
  • I mean, if its not going to be available until next year, who is going to buy a PS2 these days?

Bone-heads ... its just like the short-lived days of MSX, oddly enough.

Hey Sony, you want to make this device really useful?

Give it a nice 16" LCD and a battery pack and put it in a laptop form factor. We can't carry our TV's everywhere. It would be great to have the choice, hook it up to a TV and have it "just work" or unhook it and raise the LCD and have it "just work".

    -"Is that a laptop?"
-"No, it's the new PSX playstation from Sony. It's WONDERFUL! Virus free, hassle free, I can play games and watch and record DVD's anywhere. No drivers, no security updates, no crashes, no fuss. It just works. Boots up in 2 seconds too. I'm on my way to a PSX LAN party right now!
    • Now thats a great Idea. I would love to have my ps2/tivo/dvd player on the go. Expecially for thoes long 12 hr flights to Japan. Then the only problem would be a sutible battery life.
    • Except it's called an Xbox, and we call the Xbox system link parties. My Xbox, with its cool portable case, lets me have DVDs, music, and video games anywhere I want to plop it down. Granted, it doesn't have a portable LCD screen, but there are always more TVs at the system link parties.

Plus, system link is finally not a joke on the Xbox because MS chose to use ethernet for it instead of some proprietary connector/cable setup.

It's been said already in previous discussions, but I still can't get over how stupid Sony is to name it the "PSX".

Playstation 1 was called PSX for short.
Playstation 2 was called PS2 for short.
The Playstation X is going to be called PSX for short.
And nobody saw this as a problem?
    • Don't you see? It's Sony's master plan for piracy avoidance.

Naughty people want to chip their 'PSX', they search for 'PSX chipping' and get loads of results for chipping the PS1 (not the PS One, which is, of course, something different). Piracy problem solved!

If you plan on picking one of these up, plan on looking for some wireless controllers [madcatz.com] with it - the controller ports are (delightfully) in the back. This is a Good Thing. The device looks better (you don't have cables hanging off the front of your DVD player, do you?), and it encourages people to go for a more elegant solution. If only Sony had doen the first-party wireless [nintendo.com] thing. Oh well.

  • The PS2s have a very short life span(Troll me down and you are blind), just ask any GameStop or EB. The DVD lasers fail after about 9 months to a year.

It will be interesting to see if it is still the same quality of manufacturing for the PSX or not. It would really hurt sales to know your DVD laser will eventually fail.

I suppose since it is also a burner a better laser would be used, but personally I'd be a bit cautious and not become an early adopter.
    • The DVD lasers fail after about 9 months to a year

You know, I've heard this before, and I don't doubt it's largely true -- the PS2 in general has a flimsy feel to it.

But here's the exception to the rule I guess. I've had my PS2 for over 2 years. The same one. It's even been knocked around a bit (used to stand it on its end, stopped doing that). And, it still works flawlessly on DVDs and games, and I use it pretty regularly. Of course, as soon as I type this, it'll probably stop working.

  • So it has a DVD recorder, how is this useful?

Is there also a seperate DVD reader?
Does this mean you can then copy games or movies to the hard drive and then put them on a different DVD?
Can you record a tv show and burn that to a DVD, or copy music to the hard drive and burn that to a DVD?
What about downloading and installing other programs on the PSX that one would WANT to burn to a DVD? Wouldn't that be the sort of thing Microsoft is trying hard to prevent?

To me this sounds like their giving out hardwa
