anakin876 writes "The unofficial Star Wars-oriented mod Galactic Conquest for Battlefield 1942 has finally released a new version (0.2) today, which includes 8 maps and 40 vehicles. Check out http://www.galactic-conquest.net/ for mirrors. Tonight the Empire Falls!" Not to be confused with a similar official product, Star Wars: Battlefront, there's a large number of screenshots showcasing this unofficial BF1942 mod, which we've previously reported on

Download it from here [galactic-conquest.net]. it will give you an idea on what the mod looks like. To me, this looks a lot better than 0.1 version which was ugly and not so great. I will be playing this mod this weekend. :)

For the most coverage a Star Wars mod has gotten without getting the legal slapdown from Lucas.

Why hasn't anyone done a GiJoe mod for any game lately/at all? I don't know about other /.'ers but the idea of driving in a tank with the speed of a hummer while having dozens of rockets, 2 machine guns, a big'ol gun turret with only one driver sounds like great fun to me. Can't forget about the seacraft or aircraft either. Gotta have missle launching, floating-APCs and helicopters with enough firepower to level small towns single-handedly.

If they were to make a GI Joe mod (Which I believe somebody is) [about.com]

Would that mean that the mod would include an aim bot that forces everybody to miss?

      Yo-Joe! Co-bra!

        THIS IS NOT THE END

        THIS IS A NEW BEGINNING

Lawyers have contracted us on behalf of the Hasbro Corporation.

As you could probably guess, they've issued a cease and desist.

        Our current plan of action:

We are in the process of contacting Hasbro directly to see if we can

get their permission to continue producing the mod.

It's a long shot to say the least.

We are assuming we will not get their blessing.

In that vain we have already begun converting most of the stuff in game

        to a non-trademarked version
        • We still have not received anything from Hasbro so we are moving in a new direction. We have taken down our old page and will be creating a new one. We have posted links to our forums here an have a small contact list here. Right now we need some help naming a couple of the new vehicles so if you guys would like to help us out please check out the post in our forum or you can go directly to post here.

Thanks for the post, shame you didn't bother posting this piece as well.

        • I *have* mod points, but there is no classification for your post. If I *were* to mod you, I'd give you +3 shaddap.

So much for modding this thread.

    • See here [planetbattlefield.com]. The team got in trouble from Hasbro [hasbro.com] though. :(
  • I remember this mod used to be limited to only one server. Is this still the case?

  • How long before LucasArts comes down on them like a ton of wookie shit?

It looks like they've ripped off chracter and vehicle design wholesale, and like it or not kids, the copyright in said designs resides with the guys who thunk it first.

    T&K.
    • The people who put this together must have spent so many hours on it that I can't even fathom. Why would you put that much work into something that's going to get shut down, and likely get you sued?

And for that matter, why not put all that effort into something original, rather than stealing someone else's ideas? Don't you think Star Wars is kinda done to death? What's the point? Have you no imagination of your own to match your programming skills?

If you're going to spend all that time, give the world

Given how Sony has run a similar game, Planetside, they have a similar propensity to blow this one too with a heavy subscription. Given the quality of the screenshots of the mod, I am leaning towards believing that this mod will outdraw the official battlegrounds game.

If Lucas Arts were smart, they would decide compare what they are working on with what these guys are doing. If these guys are doing a better job then they should stop development on their own game and see if they can get hire these guys to complete the project. Get a license for BF1942 and then sell the commercial product. Much better than trying to do the whole thing yourself just because you Lucas Arts. Companies tend to make piss poor decisions about working with a community to make a good product. Yeah these guys probalbly borrowed Lucas Art content, but if they make a decent product and would like to get it officially sponsored and sold, LA should do it.
      • There's actually some flash movies on the Lucas website for their game which show off the gameplay and environments. So far the graphics look way better than bf1942. MUCH denser jungles. Honestly the foliage looks denser than BF:Vietnam. And while the bf1942 mod rocks (DLed it last night), they still have a long way to go, and Lucas Arts should be able to deliver better gameplay with theirs. I'm just glad I have a free SW mod to play that isn't crappy.

      • The only problem is that Lucas wont listen to suggestions about a game from the forums. GC will!
