Metal Gear Solid Gets TTS Speed Demo, Sequel Features 17

Thanks to Evil Avatar for pointing to the Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes speed demo archive, which is storing a massive 294MB DIVX video showing the recently released GameCube title completed perfectly on Extreme mode in 1 hour and 10 minutes - the record holder 'Karma Hunter' explains: "I decided to help those I knew by making a video of a no-save game. Nothing fancy--a perfect run. So, I turned GOID (Game Over If Discovered) on, and made a video. Imagine my utter shock when I achieved a World Record at the end of the video." Elsewhere 1UP has a few more details regarding the PS2's Metal Gear Solid 3, after last week's voice casting call revealed possible new character names, also noting much more complex combat for the sequel, with moves "...developed by MGS military advisor Motosada Mori, himself a teacher of self-defense and close combat techniques."

Dog tags in the game are useless other than bragging rights but, maybe they'll make a side-award for someone who can do something similar (obviously with slightly more time) while getting all the dog tags...

While we're on the topic of 'perfect runs', Konami did that web ranking system system maybe they'll do the same with MGS3. They did for MGS2/Substance, so its not out of the question..

I downloaded the video, and it's absolute shite. I can see a dark blob running around on a slightly darker screen, and hear some sound in the background. Lets hear it for correct lighting so we can even see what's going on

Yeah it's dark, but if you go into your DivX settings and turn up the brightness you can still see it fine. I've already got a dark monitor and that makes it quite viewable.

The guy obviously taped this on VHS first, before capturing it onto his PC (probably via a USB MPEG-1 unit by the looks of it). In other words, if you're looking for a pixel perfect representation...do it yourself. The guy isn't in it to show off video quality, just his skills at this game.

Turn up your brightness or just close the window.

It seems the vyper6 guy he mentions in the article has (as of now) beaten him again by a cool 30 seconds [konamijpn.com].
    • by Anonymous Coward
The difference is that vyper is not getting the Big Boss rank; he doesn't have Game Over If Discovered on. Ergo, he is free to use a few time saving tactics that just wouldn't work otherwise.

For example, if you throw down a Chaff grenade, you can run through a room regardless of which guards see you. They aren't counted as Alerts because the guards don't get to report them. Obviously, if GOID were on, the game would end as soon as one of those guards saw you.

I think Karma Hunter is definitely the bette

No one found the entry "Thunderbolt (Colonel)" interesting? Colonel Roy Campbell, much like Revolver Ocelot, would've been a young man in the 1960s, and he probably would've been a military man since the age of 18. And it's not unlikely that someone overseeing a highly secret military group (Foxhound) would've been a former member, probably with his own codename...

Then again, Campbell never seemed to regard Revolver Ocelot with any suspicion while Ocelot was a legitimate member of Foxhound, so there would be kind of a continuity gap there.
  • ...anyone managed to beat it in less than 1:30 with the cutscenes included? That would be mighty impressive.

Anyway, this is kind of strange. I don't have the money to buy the game until next week, and some other people are already beaten it and are making freaking speed demos! Last time it was NWN:Hordes of the Underdark, the game wasn't released here yet and some people had already beaten it. Suppose it's the downside of having games with only ~20-30 hours of play time. =)

    • You gotta remember that this game (well, the original) came out in 1998. These guys have probably been honing their skills since back then and were probably setting speed records as well.
Just remember, we may all not be able to beat MGS in less than 2:00, but I'm still having fun trying.
  • has anyone got a torrent link to this file?
  • Did anyone else check that last link? This [clscbtassc.com] has got to be the geekiest looking guy I've ever seen with a gun. I don't know whether to be frightened or laugh. I hope the in-game charachters are more menacing.
