Counter-Strike For Source Engine Shown In South Korea 17

Thanks to CS-Nation for its discussion of the first public showing of Valve's team-based FPS Counter-Strike: Source, including new screenshots and videos, as "the first playable exhibition of it [was held] this weekend in Seoul, Korea." An earlier CS-Nation news story has comments from an attendee, who suggests: "It isn't really different from the way you would feel while you're playing current CS. New physics and graphics are obviously improved, but it wasn't really enough to make me shock in awe." However, he does argue: "The graphics, of course, [are] absolutely excellent. I think the new de_dust2 is the map that can show the real power of [Half-Life 2 engine] Source."

Also mentioned was that CS:S should be free for anyone who purchases HL2. This is a change from previous rumours that it would be a seperate (ie. you pay for it) game.

The day VALVe announced what the multiplayer component would be Counter-strike (and the videocam-footage appeared on the Net) : They kinda implied that it would come with HL2 for free (otherwise there would be no MP compartment).

I think you might be confused with the different packages they are , afaik, still going to sell over Steam : As in, packages with only the SP part ; and to either buy packages, or rent them for a certain period.

    • I read somewhere that CS:S will be free, but Counter-Strike 2 (a substantial upgrade over CS1) will be a stand-alone product, not a HL2 mod.

Turns out Cliffe is a star in South Korea, as many players and game designers are in a nation with the highest broadband penetration in the world and the biggest mmorpg, in terms of registered users, ever (Lineage ~ 4 million subscribers). It's good to see talented young people get the credit and the fame they deserve, even in a country where pop songs are all about Starcraft... [bash.org]
    • CS seems to have a pretty fanatical following here in the US too. I actually started playing it in 1999. The popularity of an otherwise obscure mod really took off. A couple of years ago I spotted the game on a picture in National Geographic. I haven't played CounterStrike in nearly a year so I'm really looking forward to the new HL2 version.

I believe the decision to simply upgrade the graphics is actually a very smart one. The gameplay in CounterStrike is incredibly addictive and a few changes in the wron

I wonder if it's going to be the same for HL2...
    • Well, they didn't want it to be diffrent, they wanted to port CS to the source engine, as it is. Players HATE when anything changes, generally. Those who want a diffrent game will play CS2 instead.

LOL, I always though de_dust2 was kind of ugly, like... how many shades of brown do you guys want! (Don't answer that goatse man)

Good layout and playbility : YES
    Good Graphics and atmosphere: NO

There are graphically better HL maps out there, you just have to stop playing this f-fing map :)

And right on cue, Nightwatch [hl-nightwatch.net]!

Okay, it's not released yet, and it's single-player only, but a lot of people seem convinced we're cheating somehow. But we aren't - we're just a bunch of nutters who can make the prehistoric Half-Life engine sing and dance like the very latest... :-)
    • Have you checked out the Condition Zero of de_dust2? It's called de_dust2_cz, its got better graphics :)
