Nintendo World Store to Open This Weekend 44
LordJezo writes "The New York Times is reporting that the Nintendo World Store is set to open this Saturday (May 14th) in Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Set to be a 10,000 square-foot Nintendo store visitors are promised exclusive Nintendo merchandise and the ability to test out the latest and greatest Nintendo products.IGN is also reporting that the grand opening party will include 'game kiosks, giveaways and gaming competitions, and even the chance to play against a celebrity'." Because nothing says legitimate like Kid Rocking playing Metroid.

At least when they're all using the XBox, we know where the larger selection of glitzy-but-substanceless games will be going. The gamecube is the gaming industry's best kept secret.

We did banners for "Nintendo World Rockefellar Center May 14th 1-5pm" banners at work a couple weeks ago. I was googling and everything for info on it and couldnt' find anything.
At least I finally know. i was gonna head down there on that day to see what it was.

Nintendo already had the store space in NYC; if I'm not mistaken, this store was the old Pokémon Center.
The store's location doesn't have anything to do with regional sales, though. The store isn't in NYC because people there don't buy enough Nintendo products. If the Gamecube was unpopular in the city, then why waste the effort to open a store that's dedicated in large part to it?

Back in 1992 I said the same thing about Sonic The Hedgehog never making an appearance on a Nintendo console.
Of course, Sega has been traditionally worse managed by Sony. But you never know. With all 3 consoles converging in the same technologies (Power Processors, PC-grade graphics cards) and with the rising cost of making a game, I believe that a common gaming development platform is not a crazy idea.

A new building was recently put up on the south-west corner of Central Park (the Time-Warner building). The top floors are residential, and the top two floors sold for a combined 44 million dollars (making it the most expensive Manhattan real estate purchase ever). A STUDIO apartment in the building sold for over 1 million dollars.

It's pretty cool. There are TONS of stations set up to play Gamecube, DS, and SP games. There's an area set up on the first floor with a round table and a bunch of DS's so people can easily play wirelessly with eachother. There are also SPs and DSes hooked up to monitors to play (the DSes have two). Then there are there uber surround sound chairs with large screens for Gamecubes, as well as E3-boot like Gamecubes hooked up to LCD screens.
Lots of Pokemon stuff of course, and a large accessory section.
The Nintendo museum thing is all right, but it's not very big. It's itneresting to look back at old NES hardware, though, especially the Japanese-only accessories like the keyboard.
It's worth stopping in if you're in the area, but it's not worth planning some big road trip to go see.

I brought mine in yesterday. If I go tomorrow I'll bring it to see if anyone else has one and wants to play, not to try to show up Nintendo or anything. I just don't own a DS.
