PS3 Still Possible This Year? 36

IGN reports that the possibility exists the PlayStation 3 may still see release this year. Sony Chief Financial Officer Takao Yuhara mentioned in a statement to a Japanese news service that a year end release of the next generation Playstation is an option they are exploring. From the article: "Most industry speculation calls for a next generation PlayStation release in 2006. Sony's third party developers have backed this assumption up with a strong list of PlayStation 2 titles planned for the rest of the year and early next."

Well..the PS3 would have a huge selection of existing PS2 games that it can already run, unlike the Xblob 360.

    • 2006 actually. The UMD is a modified BRD and Sony is the main backer of the BRD format and this is their one and only chance to get more BRD players out there than HDDVD players. If Nintendo joined them (so far only DVd playback is confirmed for the Rev), BRD might be able to kill HDDVD.

You make it sound like Japan hasn't had blu-ray drives and set-top recorders since April, 2003 [digit-life.com].
      • History of 1st one out of the gate....

        8-bit era - Nintendo - good
        16-bit era - TurboGrafx16 - no good
        32-bit era - 3D0 - no good
        64-bit era - Jaguar - no good
        128-bit era - Dreamcast - no good
        Future era - Xbox360 - ???

Notice, systems that release into an older bit usually are a success. Like PS2 released as 32-bit later.

If Sony decides to release PS3 this year, it's going to one hell of a rush job. I mean, they're not even ready to demonstrate it at this point -- it's unthinkable that they're going to release it this year. And don't forget the three to nine months delay from Sony releasing it in Japan before it is released in the US and Europe.
    • Since Sony are widely expected to demonstrate the machine in 2 days time, being "not even ready to demonstrate it" isn't that relevant, especially when you consider that Microsoft are currently claiming they will have the Xbox360 in shops this year and they were ""not even ready to demonstrate it" until about 17 hours ago.
      • Ok, point taken. However, Sony has continually stated that PS3 won't be out on the market until 2006 at the earliest, and cancelled a PS3 showing a few months back because neither the system nor any games/demos were ready. Slashdot had a story about it.

Anyway, it's all just a marketing thing. Sony just want people to delay their Xbox360 purchase until PS3 is out. Personally, I'll buy both systems :)

    • PSOne and PS2 didn't jump the gun because of Saturn or Dreamcast. Both decisions were correct. Basically, learn from your competition and let them shoulder the financial burden of next-gen marketing.

For at least one year, many XBox360 games will seem to be XBox games ported to the new video and sound capabilities. If Sony follows suit, we may be looking at just game demos for 6 months.

They're 'hinting' that it's possible that they'll release the PS3 in 2005 because they want people to just get that 'shadow of a doubt' before they rush out and get an XBox2 *knowing* (supposedly) the PS3 is at least a year away.

For them, just getting your to stop for a second and consider maybe waiting for the PS3, compairing the 2 systems and *then* deciding which one to get will be enough for them...

Then again... maybe they have a supprise for us :)

This 360 thing sure reminds me of the dreamcast's moment in the sun, and subsequent demise at the hands of the PS2. That being said, I can't imagine Sony would jump the gun with PS3 being that they already had tremendous success without allowing another company to dictate when their console was released.
  • PS3 devkits have been out at developers since Nov last year (to a select few).. dont doubt that Sony might even jump the gun with the PS3.. In fact .. having MS in a position where they just dont know what Sony is doing is an ideal marketing strategy.. and if they have something ready even around XBox360 release time.. what a coup.. and thats the sort of thing Sony like to pull.
  • Sony generally releases their consoles late. Maybe they decided that for once they'd like to see what happens when they release early o.o;;
  • I still don't think Sony will be able to do anything here in the US this year. If they do manage to rush something out the door, then maybe Nintendo will even have a chance to make up some lost share (sacrificing time for quality is my point). Either way, I would think that we would have heard reports of manufacturers working on parts and such, like we have with the Xbox 2, and N Revoluion. Shit like that is always leaked. I have this funny feeling that the PS3 will stay on my "meh" list just like the P
  • For once i want to see them just stop limiting players to one game region. if they want to stop modchip trading, this is the best strategy. Just let the console play both PAL and NTSC games, most TV sets can support both
