Fanmade Thief 2 Expansion Released 23

Anonymous writes "After 5 years of development, the fan-made Thief 2X has finally been released. It's an expansion for the now-defunct Through the Looking Glass's Thief 2, and it's free. It features 13 new missions, new weapons, new items, and a new heroine. A trailer is also available." From the site: "On May 25th, 2000, Looking Glass Studios closed its doors. The makers of intelligent first-person, story-driven games would no longer give us such immersive and harrowing experiences as we found in System Shock and Thief. Shortly thereafter, a group of designers, artists, writers, and audio talents joined to form TTLG's Dark Engineering Guild. If LGS wasn't going to make another Thief game, someone else would have to..."

  • I couldn't find any reference to the licensing terms, but the main page has this at the bottom:
All Content Copyright 2002 Dark Engineering Guild. Well the content be further redistributable or usable in other projects?

    Thief isn't gone. There's a Thief 3 [thief3.com]. I love this game.
    • I just picked this up at the gamestop for 20 bucks. It looks like butt on my pc and plays even worse. I'm not sure what the deal is. I'm going to keep at it as I have yet to read or hear a bad review about it. Maybe I need to update my ati drivers or something.
      • Should not it plays fined on my athlon 2200 and even played fine on my old machine, the game is awesome.
        • It has consolitis, the same way that DX2 did. Small levels suck.
          • Actually the consolitis is not that bad, and I always hated the monstrous levels of the first two parts. Besides that, the game has a much bigger feeling to it, since it is one big city where you can break in wherever you go, and just get your missions. Thief3 basically is the game I wished Thief1 would have been.
  • will be very happy. [penny-arcade.com] On another note, they did make some pretty good games. System shock was badass, at least I remember it being, seeing as I haven't played it a long time. Its cool to see people that like games so much make their own expansion even after a company is belly-up.

Through the Looking Glass [ttlg.com] is not defunct. Neither is the Thief series [thief3.com] (althought it is arguably complete now.)

Looking Glass Studios is gone, although many of the employees did wind up working for Ion Storm Austin on Thief 3.

Big congrats to the the T2X team though, who started all this back when we weren't sure there'd be a T3. I look forward to playing this (and the Circle of Stone and Shadow [ttlg.com], if that's ever finished....)

  • I find the Thief series redefined what a FPS could be. The game had many things that made it unique. For one, you couldn't just attack a whole army of soldier, because you were guaranteed to get killed.

It also rewarded you for just sneaking around, stealing and not getting caught. At the time, it was the only game in the FPS category that you could complete without killing anyone. Even now, I haven't seen a game where you could do that.

The one thing that disappointed me the most was that no one else got i
    • Well, I always appreciated how creepy the Thief games were. Specifically Thief 2 - that game scared me to the point of keeping me up at night, which no other game or movie has. If you're into the creepiness of the games, give 3 a shot. It has the scariest level of any game I've ever played.

Ah, you must mean Shalebridge Cradle. :) That level scared the turd out of me. Amazing atmosphere and plain old creepy gameplay.

Not that it's much of a game, but in order to get the "Jesus" ranking you have to complete Postal 2 without killing anyone.

"Thief" is not the preferred nomenclature. "Rogue," please.
  • According to a friend who began playing it about a week ago, it's not quite as good gameplay-wise as Thief 2, but is definitely better than Thief 3. Note that this friend thinks T3 is a good game, so really it's a glowing recommendation.

I actually started looking at the project 3 years ago, but stopped checking its progress after about a year. Amusingly enough, I ran into someone I haven't seen for nearly a decade, and when I asked her what she was up to she responded that she was voicing the main charac
  • Anyone missing the old theif games should check out the Splinter Cell series. The Splinter Cell series definately takes on a lot of qualities from the Thief series. I'm not sure if its possible to finish without killing anyone, but the stealth is amazing and adds a lot with the co-op.
    • Hogwash. Splinter Cell is completely different. I love Thief. I hate Splinter Cell. Why? Spinter Cell requires complex button mashing to execute exactly the right moves, which, for me, means that I have to save before nearly every action because I will fall to my death with more than 50% probability. Furthermore, Splinter Cell is annoyingly linear, while Thief is Freedom Itself.
