Kingdom Hearts 2 - Now With Tron 43

Much anticipated sequel to the original Square-Enix/Disney collaboration just became even more interesting. 1up.com has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 2 will feature a Tron world, based on the 1982 Disney film. From the article: "As you can see in a scan posted in this thread, Goofy, Donald and that cutie Sora are fully decked out in the duds of the Master Control Program universe, as well as Mr. Kevin Flynn himself, Jeff Bridges. Having the crew of Kingdom Hearts tackle a world based on a live-action film is nothing new to this sequel as a world based on Pirates of the Caribbean, complete with a seriously detailed Johnny Depp has long since been revealed."

  • Perhaps this is a good way for them to reuse assets and amortize their losses over the dismal sales of TRON the game....
  • Should read:

  • Have any of my fellow geeks who prattle on about how wonderful this movie is and how much they love it actually seen it in the last decade? It's easy to talk about something positively when you're basing it on nostalgic memories rather than reality.

The movie came out when I was four or five years old and I watched it when I was ten or twelve. It was good. Not great, but good. I watched it a decade ago, when I was about 18. You know what? It was terrible. As I said in that other StarWars post, Tron was I act
    • i have to agree, I used to think that it was a good movie when I was a kid. But a few months ago I watched it again, and aroud 2/3 of the way into it I was so bored I couldn't finish it. There was nothing good about it.

Yeah, it's a bit crap, especially to those of us who have a clue how computer systems work, but I also wonder how many people that movie piqued the interest of who might not have entered the IT field.

And while it's certainly dated, I think both the story and the effects have held up remarkably well considering how old it is. There's plenty of movies since that can't say as much.

      • I just wish I'd never watched it again. I barely remember the movie, but watching it as an adult really was a bad move. Same with The Last Starfighter. I had such fond memories of both. And sure, they were great at the time. But that was 20+ years ago each.

It would be nice to have modern versions (not remakes, just comparable modern movies for this generation that were in the same sort of vein as those movies from 80-84). Hell, I remember this great movie about this guy's (Apple?) that got jealous of him an
    • I watched TRON first as a young kid and thought it was pretty cool. We even had some of the toys, the light cycle toys were all right. Watching it again 15 years later and actually understanding everything they were talking about I find I have a greater appreciation for what's going on and like it more now.
    • I'm 28. I saw tron again about three years ago. It was fantastic. There are definitely movies that I stopped enjoying, but that's not one of them.
  • Serious, I can't be lured with Tron and Donald Duck.

Then again, if this dude [tronguy.net] would be in the game, I'd be buying it in a second.[/cheapshot]

    • The sad thing is that Jay Maynard probably still has ten times the life that most of us Slashdotters do. Myself, included.

Not to mention, that dude's got balls (no pun intended). I usually ridicule total dorks who make lameass fanboy suits and cosplay outfits, but he made a cool costume, had the guts to wear it, went national with it (Don and Mike, Jimmy Kimmel, etc) and had a good time with it. You really have to be comfortable with yourself to pull that off.
      • You really have to be comfortable with yourself to pull that off.

...or just be very ignorant of other people's opinions (see Idols for example).
But I agree with your that with this dude it's probably as you say : But man, the spandex + seethrough-nuts was too much at the time ;)

  • Tron was Allan's (Bruce Boxleitner) program, thus if they are using the same person we're looking at Bruce Boxleitner.

I'd rather play a game with Donald in Mathemagic Land.... ;-)
  • I seriously doubt that anybody in this game's target audience has even heard of the movie Tron, let alone seen it. I'm gonna have to take a "wait-and-see" approach with this world. If it's anything like the Gummi Ship sequences from the last game, then I'm jumping off the bandwagon.

See, that's what I used to think about Kingdom Hearts - it's aimed at kids. Sure, the game's worlds are based on Disney films, and they are (almost always) aimed at kids. But the game's difficulty and scope, and the themes it explores through the storyline are anything but childish. I used to also think "It's a shame that lots of people will think "pff this looks like a kids game" and not play it", but now I just pity them since KH is a really *really* good game. The sequel has been on the horizon for a long time, and every time I read a preview of it I remember how much I enjoyed the first one. Auron is in KH2....I don't see how that could possibly be bad :D Should point out that the parent has obviously played the game and hopefully liked it, this post was more to inform people who hadn't given the original a shot for fear of playing a crappy and short game.
      • Agreed. KH is no more a kids game than any of the FF series. It's a good storyline, with a good Active Time system and neat bosses to kill. Note that not only is interacting with the Disney classics and FF characters cool, but the original KH material is cool too (the end stages are very well designed).
      • I originally bought KH for the kids....but I ended up playing it long after they'd quit. And yeh, I hated the gummi ship stuff, too. But any game that includes Cloud and Sephiroth can't be bad.
  • ...so does this mean it will have GRID BUGS?
  • I hope they get David Warner to reprize his role as the villian. This guy is my all time favorite bad guy. His voice has always given me chills. I'll never forget him as Jon Irenicus(Baldur's Gate II), the Evil Genius(Time Bandits), Ra's Al Ghul(Batman the Animated Series), The Archmage(Gargoyles), Gul Madred(Star Trek: TNG), and of course the bad guy from Tron.
  • Kingdom Hearts one had, as its theme, Disney animation. Which is well and good, because animation has historically been the thing Disney does best. Although many of the worlds of the game were wildly different from each other as to invite cognative dissonance (Jack Skellington and Alladin, Beast and those Final Fantasy dweebs?), at least they could cop to "Disney magic" being the theme, which, although it may be a lousy piece of corporate propaganda to build a game around, at least it attempted to dodge t
  • Seriously. Your toons have no business within the Tron world. The movie was great, Tron the game was a worthfull addaption\sequel on the movie. But please DO NOT LES YOUR DONALD\MICKEY toons in this wonderfull world. The only thing you will do is ruin it for the few Tron fans you've got left.
  • First 3 comments from the thread with the picture:

    1. Holy shit x10
    2. OMFG, is that TRON!?
    3. NO FUCKING WAY

To which I'd just like to add OMFGROFLOL!!?! Dizney p0wns!!!

Maybe Disney are aiming at a more mature audience? (Their usual target is 1-5, right?)
    • That's funny, because the next 30 responses are exactly the same. My guess is we have retarded monkeys who keep typing the same thing because they can't remember thet just did.
