Smash Bros. Creator On-Board For Revolution Smash 37

Gamespot reports that Nintendo has opened an office dedicated to the next-gen sequel to Smash Bros. From the article: "Heading up the new studio is the series' original creator, Masahiro Sakurai. He returns to the Nintendo organization after a two-year absence. According to Famitsu, Sakurai was persuaded by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata to return to Nintendo over conversations that took place at the E3 Expo held earlier this year. Preparing a new Super Smash Bros. game with such short notice was not easy for Sakurai, given the game's tight development schedule."

    Smash Bros and its sequel hide gameplay gems behind the cutesy-looking characters. I'm really looking forward to this, because it's about time Nintendo stopped pumping out "Mario Parties" and started doing more MK and SSB stuff.
    And when the hell are they going to release one on the DS? Online play, ala Mario Kart only this time with more freedom to choose whoever you want to play, and bam. Instant success. Jump Super Stars proved that it's possible, so what are they waiting for?
    • It was already said during the E3 announcement of the Revolution that the Revolution's SSB will be playable online. It would be interesting to see a DS SSB, but if they are pumping all of their resources to make the Revolution's SSB even better than the Gamecube's I'm all for not getting a DS one.

        My hopes are kind of different. I though the single-player arcade mode of SSB, while obviously rushed and rather thin, was an awesome idea: Choose any of the classic Nintendo characres and play them in a world that contains levels taken from various classic Nintendo games. Try to play 'Ice climber' using Pikachu, or playing Zelda using Fox, etc. Given enough effort and polish, this could be a wonderful way to rediscover the magic of the older Nintendo titles. Even more fun would be a multiplayer co-op version of the arcade mode.
        • Isn't this what the Adventure mode in SSBM is? Seems like you just described it in your post anyway.
          • I think what the grandparent is saying is that they liked the idea from SSBM's single player, but that they feel it was shallow and rushed. They would like to see a second attempt at the same where more care is used to give players a deeper, richer experience.
            • Perhaps, I thought they were specifying SSB(not Melee, but the first game which was on the N64) and I was pointing out that the sequel seemed to have what they wanted.

      I'd like to see more SSB games as well, but I'm a little worried that if they start pumping them out, the series will run into the same problem as many others. The quality of the games will go down in order to keep putting them out on a schedule and people will start to get bored
    • I would like to see a DS-edition of Smash Bros., but not as a complete stand alone game. We've already seen Gameboy/Gamecube connectivity with Metroid (where completing the GBA version unlocked the original Metroid in the Gamecube version [or something similar, my facts may be off]) and Animal Crossing (where your character could visit an island that you could transfer to your GBA, or where classic NES games could be transferred to the GBA.)

      • Ewww. You want unlockables? That you have to buy two games and two consoles to use?
        • For one thing, having SSB on the DS would be nice, as you could take it more places than you could the Revolution. The portability plus connectivity would be a nice feature. Yes, I think it would be good incentive to have both characters that are unlocked in the single game by sole achievements, then exclusives that are only unlocked through sync'ing the two devices. (Or using an Action Replay, of course.)
          • I'd sell my damn DS if they did that. Unlockables are annoying enough. Forcing me to buy 2 games to get to use the full value of a game I paid for is *not* cool. WHen I buy a game, every facet of that game should be available to me, if I have the skill to achieve it. It should *NOT* require me to spend additional money to attain.

            • I don't mind single-player unlockables, but I can't stand having to unlock multiplayer modes/moves/weapons/maps, etcetera. Multiplayer is about having fun with other people, not about challenging the computer.
    • There really is a massive amount of little strategic and technical gems hidden in that game. Me and my friends at my dorm here play it a lot, and the more we play the more we discover. Certain characters have better match-ups against other characters, on different levels. Also, there's a huge amount of technical skill that you can pick up, doing things like "wavedashing", or "short hopping an aerial attack then fast-falling into an L-cancel."     Does this mean we can expect more than one Smash Bros game on the Revolution? I mean it'd be a huge waste of resources to open an office for one game then shut it down upon completion..
    • They have a lot of work to do: Revo controller setup, online play, new characters, new arenas, hopefully a better 1P Adventure mode, new 1P modes, more customization... this could be a bigger jump than the one from the original to Melee if they do it right. That takes a lot of resources (ie its own office), but it'll be a big deal because it will be a huge hook to sell consoles.

      And if they make another one about two thirds into the Revo's life, I'd pick it up right away as long it represented another big
      • I'm hoping for a big jump. As great as SSB and Melee were, Melee was really just an incremental improvement over the original game. The two games are very similar. Hopefully this one will be a big jump, and not SSB v1.3.

    the title of this article includes the phrase "Revolution Smash" and you know what? that has to be the title now. either that, or "Smash Smash Revolution." just don't get it crossed with "Smash Smash Xbox" [smashmyxbox.com] because that could be costly and potentially retarded.

    I was under the impression that the next Smash has been in development for a while. How are they supposed to make an amazing game with less that a year before the release of the Revo?

    They say they might be putting 50 people on the project, but that will only go so far. The old adage of "hiring 9 pregnant women to produce a baby in a month" comes to mind.

      They annouced Smash Bros. for the Revolution when they showed off the mock up at E3. I'm just surprised Gamespot is just reporting the fact that Sakurai was coming back for the next Smash game. I heard about it on other sites atleast 2 weeks ago.

      It's less than year before the release of the revolution? Wow. Didn't think there was a release date yet. The only fact I've heard is that it's less than a year before we know when the details of what we may know might be released. That's not what I call a release date though.

    I hope that they include some more characters that aren't just different looking Mario. I can understand why they need Luigi, but is Dr. Mario really necessary? Being a self proclaimed master of Smash Bros, I can feel the difference between two similar characters, but it is a little disappointing to unlock Ganondorf to find out that he is just a Cptn Falcon. I am hoping for more unique, Ice Climber-type, characters.
    • I don't know how you consider the big hulking mass that is Ganondorf another Captain Falcon.
    • Wait... are you saying instead of a Mario clone you want an Ice Climbers clone? Or are you saying you want a brand new character in the way that the Ice Climbers were brand new?

      I definitely agree with you there on the second one, if that's what you mean. I too can "feel the difference" as you put it of the similar characters, but it would be nice to have a super wide variety of choices. Of course, I want the game soon, too, so it'd be a trade-off in time vs. features.

      • Bah. What we all want is smash brothers DS, with wifi connectivity. You can already sorta get this experience with kaillera [kaillera.com] and an N64 emulator that supports it; it is actually somewhat smooth. You might think a fighting game is impossible online because of the latency, but if it can work through kaillera, which plays games that aren't even designed for netplay, then certainly it could work for the DS if it was built from the ground up for netplay. You sorta adapt the the latency after a while.

      Too bad the Belmonts are all Konami's charecters. I'd like to battle it out with them some time.
