The 10 Most Interesting People in Gaming for 2005 101

jkdove writes "GamerGod rolls out their list of "The 10 Most Interesting People in Gaming for 2005". From the article: "Our list draws from a wide slice of the gaming community. A respected game designer is on the list, but so is a political figure, a game player, a man with an agenda, and even a modder. Each person was selected for their ability to grab and hold the headlines with their design, deeds, or words; and for their contribution to twelve months of gaming headlines, news, scandals, sensations, and entertainment.""

By including Jack Thompsonas the number one most interesting person in gaming, it makes a dangerous assumption that to be associated with doesn't mean you are in it. No matter how important, ridiculous, or inflammatory his actions might be, I still find it hard to characaterize him as "in gaming".

Since when does headline grabbing equal interesting? Why do we need a list giving attention grabbing whores MORE attention?

How about some people who have moved the media forward? Will Wright, Old Grandma Hardcore and Brenda Braithwaite from that list look like they qualify. Who else? If you answer Carmack I may harm you.

The reviewer does an inadequate job of describing the Leroy video. They're heading into basically a pit of death to get an item that Leroy needs, while Leroy himself is Away From Keyboard. So the crew spends a lot of time planning strategy, discussing timing, pulling out calculators to determine survival rates, and generally creating a rock solid, well-discussed, intricate plan of attack... That Leroy promptly ignores and charges in.

And they all get slaughtered. Not just killed, slaughtered. They get mauled like puppies in a lion's den. The plan falls apart completely, and so do they. Not only are there no survivors, they didn't take any of the millions of attackers out with them. It is a complete blow out.

To top it all off, over voice chat comes this little wimpering voice saying "It's... It's not my fault."

    Perfect.

Jack Thompson is not just entertaining.

He represents pretty much everything I don't like about US infotainment.

First of all that list is way too short. If you want to credit people that have benefited the industry in 2005, AND include people from all related areas, it should be a top-100. Second, the most innovative game I played in 2005 was Fahrenheit, aka Indigo Prophecy [gamespot.com], and David Cage should be on that list for making it. How many new games that were completely different from what came before did you see in 2005?

I don't know about you guys, but I think that this is definitely one of the most "interesting" gamers of 2005. Today's local Lincoln, NE newspaper had a front-page story about Brice Mellen, blind from birth, but will kick your ass at Mortal Kombat.

He was also profiled over the summer in the national media

I have to agree. At first, when I saw this list, I was thinking we were going to see programmer and publisher names. IMHO, this list is very interesting and making a very good point about where the public attention really is focused.

As far as why they don't have Carmack or Newell. Because they just are no longer news worthy. Half-Life 2 came out in 2004. So far Valve really hasn't done much since then. Sure they have used Steam to release some new very small titles, but to say that this has shifted the way that games are distributed - no. Sorry, Steam is the only one doing this. I don't see any other company doing it, yet. Sure, in the future, maybe, but not right now.

And Carmack - he has never really been that interesting. His whole thing has always been - release new game w/ spectacular engine, but so-so game built on it. Sell for a few million, then license out for mega-millions and let other companies make better games than ours. Maybe make an occasional talk about technology and what is going to be needed for the next-gen of games. IMHO, John Romero was much more interesting at his height than Carmack at his height. At least Romero was out and about, making sure his face (and hair) were seen. And he was out there attempting to (though failing miserably at) making games that were going to truly revolutionize gaming.

Besides - guys, they defined their list at the top. Why these people were on the list. What they have done, said, etc to get them on the list. And their biggest thing was that they have gotten their names/faces in the media and have some how been able to stay there.
