Can't have a guitar hero thread without the required link to http://www.guitarherobrokemyknee.com/ [guitarhero...myknee.com]. Thankfully fark photoshopped the guy today to mock him further.

I look forward to guitar hero 2 as I am starting to get bored with the backtracks on guitar hero even with my fantastic muted strings and mis-timed plucking on top of them.

How about we give the entire guitar individual fret notes and teach them how to play like THIS?!?! [google.com]

Then we'd at least have people that would know how to put notes together, instead of picking up a fake guitar and suddenly claiming that they know guitar afterwards. With mastering of any sort of scale comes a tiny true piece of understanding. This is how I've picked up guitar for the past 12-13 years now. I've got a fairly decent ability, but I can't solo due to CTS. Just hurts too much, but I can hold my

From the page about how it happens he mentions that:

Jeeze. It's funny, lighten up. I know the guy personally, and the website was started as a joke to make light of the accident. I'm sure you or nobody you know has ever hurt themselves while having fun and known 2 seconds later they shouldn't have done that. I like how, instead of being a whiney bitch and threatening to sue or something stupid like that, he's posted a somewhat humourous website about his freak injury.

I think the Red Octane guys should use him somehow for promoting Guitar Hero II... throw him in a magazine ad or something.

    * Mötley Crüe's "Shout at the Devil"
    * Reverend Horton Heat's "Psychobilly Freakout"

    * Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name Of" (maybe)
    * Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine"

Some of those have only been released in the past few days. For one, I am frickin' pumped

Michel Langevin has disclosed that Voivod has been approached for inclusion, and has agreed to let one of their songs be used.
    • Thanks for the list. I don't know too many of the songs, but I'm sure they're awesome.

Drist had a song in the "indie/bonus" section of the first game (and quite a good one, imo). Does their presence in that list mean they have been upgraded to "regular song" status, or might that be just another bonus inclusion?

Also, will they be using Wavegroup for all the songs again, or will they have any original recordings?
      • I don't know the answer to your first question (about Drist), but as for the second, some of the songs they have the original recordings for. It is more expensive for them to get those, but they've done their best. The others will be done by Wavegroup.

For everyone who said, "Free Bird!" last time... there it goes.
    • That song is going to be absolutely killer.
    • ...and the new Guitar Hero needs to at least have mass amounts of individual frets so they can instead TEACH them how to play an instrument, instead of playing with a fake instrument. I forsee this leading to many horrible garage bands in the future. Maybe one out of ten thousand will actually be good, from this game.

I seriously wish they'd develop a game where it taught you something potentially useful in this particular case. Then maybe ew'd see a quick jump in the quality of music. I bet you could te

I think one of the most important things the game teaches you is RHYTHM! Plus, it really helps you *feel* the song while pushing you to keep up the rhythm like teaching one to climb a rope by lighting it on fire. I personally enjoy the aspect that it's *not* like playing a real guitar. The challenge is real. The feeling is real. And most importantly, the FUN is real! I've actually been inspired to learn some of the songs I play on guitar hero, and not just because of the embedded suggestion that "You should

        It's a GAME.

Repeat after me: IT'S A GAME.

It is NOT an instrument. It is NOT a guitar. It is NOT guitar lessons. It is NOT a simulator.

It is a GAME that uses a custom CONTROLLER that happens to be styled after a GUITAR.

It's quite obvious that you haven't played the game, so please move along. If you want to go develop a guitar simulator and training software (HINT: It already exists) Go for it. But that's a completely different market.

It's obvious you assume, so I'm about to make a serious ass out of you and me. How do you know I've never played the game? Huh? Have you even SEEN the inside of my room? I've got a veritable recording studio in my room, plus consoles lining the WALLS starting with the TurboGrafix 16. I played GH for about 30 minutes before I got sick of it. The guitar hangs on my wall, with a big label "BULLSHIT" carved into the bottom of the guitar, with a soldering iron.

Hoo-ray for thinking you fucking know someone. N
  • I made my living for 5 years as a touring songwriter / frontman for a rock band, and I expected very little from Guitar Hero -- how could it be anything like playing a real guitar? But I LOVE the game -- the guitar controller is suprisingly good (I'd like it to be heavier tho'), and the easier settings let anyone jump right in and rock out. In my opinion, it is best in multiplayer with a group of friends. Personally, I can't wait for Guitar Hero 2.
  • My girlfriend (insert slashdot GF joke here. I'll wait. K, thanks.) has asked for Guitar Hero for her birthday, which is mid-October. So GH2 won't be out till next year, but it would be a shame if the controller changes in 6 months. I'd like to think Red Octane would offer a version of the game sans controller for those who already bought their big PS2 Axe, but perhaps not... anyone know?
    • Actually...

"Guitar Hero 2 is scheduled to hit the shelves in time for Black Friday..."

      From http://ulo.tricho.us/?p=63 [tricho.us]

So maybe you can get her a pre-order certificate for her birthday... :P

    • 2 things: GH2 is being released Nov. 7th of this year, and there is going to be a wireless controller. I'm pretty sure you can just buy a copy without the controller, similar to DDR, but I've heard issues of people not being able to get the controller without the game (for when they break the guitar).
      • ...but I've heard issues of people not being able to get the controller without the game (for when they break the guitar).
Really? every store I've seen selling it has the controller alone for $40 for those that want to rock out with 2 players at the same time. Though I've never seen just the game alone.
        • Re: (Score:2, Informative)

There was a period from June through a week or so ago during which it was almost impossible to find just the controller; no retailers had them in stock. However, they have reappeared at many retailers in the last couple of weeks (I just got my replacement at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago).

Even if you can't find it in stores, you can always order directly from Red Octane. I wouldn't expect any controller changes other than the wireless addition.
    • by jandrese ( 485 )
I doubt the controller will change. There's really no reason to change it.
    • The original GH controller *IS* compatible with GH2.
    • by cgenman ( 325138 )
According to the RedOctane website, the GH2 bundle [redoctane.com] ships with their SG controller.

  • Why does the article link to a source 2 steps removed from the actual information?

    http://ulo.tricho.us/?p=63 [tricho.us]
  • I mean, I haven't played GH myself before...but I mean... a guitar with buttons instead of strings? Why do you all like that so much? At LEAST have strings, and it doesn't matter much where you press them down, but strumming a guitar is what's makes playing fun, not pressing an electronic button...Are they even pressure sensitive?

Is there anywhere you can go to give it a try? I think you'd answer a lot of your own questions.

In case that's impossible... In order to successfully "hit" a note, you have to do a combination of two things:
      1) You push the proper fret button on the neck of the guitar, and
      2) ... at the proper time, you hit the little flipper thing where you'd normally strum a guitar.

Just like a real guitar, you can hit the fret button whenever you want (well, as early as you want). And just like a real guitar, nothing ha
      • Ok, that makes a bit more sense... I saw a video on Youtube with someone playing it and it just looked like all they were doing was hitting the fret buttons. I'll have to check it out.
  • Any chance we can get them to add Shredisode IV [myspace.com] to the game?
