Kevlar_Sindome writes "Verse Studios announced today that they have officially 'changed everything', with the release of their first game: Fool's Gold. Fool's Gold lets players take on the role of the heroic gold farmer seeking profit from gold hungry characters who seem to have an unlimited amount of money to spend, but never enough time to spend it. Touted as the first Gold Farming Role Playing Game ( GF-RPG ), Verse Studios hopes to get a jump on starting a new game genre. Fool's Gold is free for download off the Verse Studios website."

      • Well despite Linux and BSD having a higher prevalence amongst slashdotters, there are still quite a few of us who have a Windows box for gaming, or a Mac for ... looking sexy? They'll get clicks from a fairly significant number of people.

Doesn't mean you can't sleep with some of them; we are the uninhibited generation and fucking your friends isn't so wierd as it used to be. Makes it hard to meet other women sometimes though - they think that the girlie you're drinking beer (or coffee) with is your S.O.

Dude, chicks dig Macs. They look cool and they are more versatile when it comes to things like video editing, etc out of the box. Male slashdotters may be fine with an ancient beige box they built from dumpster dived or bargain basement parts, but some people like powerul, easy-to-use, aesthetically pleasing computers. Many

I think what's more insightful would be the introduction of a +5 Rich option (even just for April Fool's). Why have a karma injection without an additional cash injection (personally, I could use both :)? They always said two was better than one.

  • I'm glad to see that MRPG designers are bowing to the obvious and recognizing what people do most in their games. I think my character in this game will be called King Midas.

Now what would really be trick would be to allow gold pharmed here to be moved at some exchange rate into other games, removing the need to be doing it there.

Progress Quest [progressquest.com] is even more successful at extracting the core essence of MMORPGs, and distilling them down to their bare essentials in a way that enhances the playability of the game to the ultimate degree. Well, measured along one dimension, at least.

(And it's not specifically an April Fools joke; download it and try it out, the executable is real. Windows app, generally runs absolutely perfectly in Wine.)

I love ProgressQuest, but it does get a bit static after you've played a couple of games. I like Role Playing Game [wealthandpower.org] better; it's basically ProgressQuest with more entropy. And it's open-source!

    • I recently started playing this game again. Now that I'm over level 60, it takes forever to get anywhere. I've started to let my other personal obligations fall aside, just for the thrill of getting to the next level, or completing the next act. I'm starting to think that I've wasted all those months on a stupid game.

I think the existence of this game is disturbing, and frankly it should not be encouraged by a link on slashdot. Gold farming is a serious issue that undermines the integrity of the games we invest our time and money in to play. This game is a slap in the face of the hard working people trying to combat gold farming. Making a hero out of the gold farmer is purely offensive.

Have you figured out this whole 'April Fools' thing yet? Let me help you along:

      IT IS A JOKE.

Yes, they actually made the game, and yes, it's crap. They did it as a joke. It was never intended to draw any audience whatsoever and it does not have any political statements to make.

      IT IS A JOKE.
    • 'Gold farming is a serious issue that undermines the integrity of the games we invest our time and money in to play.'

Some people have less time and more money. Gold farming helps to balance the game play for them. The first thing that gold farming tell you is that the game has some sort of boring repetitive time sync task that needs to be eliminated. The is true of botting and macroing. Succeeding in a game should be a combination of luck and skill, syncing more time into the game shouldn't give you an edge

Slashdot is an American site and the admins are based in Michigan (or at least they used to be) so you can assume Slashdot lives and breaths on Eastern time. Frankly, 95% of the useful shit that happens in this world is geared towards the Eastern time zone so the rest of y'all can just suck it.
