Looks great to me: dark, stylish and remnants of Frank Miller (thinking Sin City). Can't see Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne though.

Actually looks like they have captured the nature of Max Payne (or at least that's how it seems from this brief trailer). The Hitman film was good, but not great, and the two Lara Croft offerings were pretty poor, but this looks promising.

You have either not seen the movie, or have not played the game.
      Which one is it?

But yes... Mark Wahlberg "Max Payne" movie does seem to be targeted at just that kind of audience you represent.
People that think that Timothy Olyphant "Hitman" movie was a good movie based on the "Hitman" games.

    • It's been a while since I saw it, and the second was poor, but I remember thinking the first Tomb Raider was quite a good movie. Hitman was okay. Doom was bollocks. This looks a bit cheesy but could be good.

I have to admit that while I enjoyed the first game, I never bothered to buy the second. Since the first game had dynamic difficulty, the level of ability the enemies had by the end was crazy - maybe I should have purposely played badly occasionally so that the enemies didn't react to me immediately as I

      • For me Tob raider failed as an action movie, and it also failed as a T&A flick too! It was a sad day; who would have thought that Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie would be a bad movie? How coudl you screw that up?
        • I just remember enjoying the bit where the special ops dude invaded her mansion, as it reminded me of Operation Flashpoint, which I'd been playing a lot around that time :p The second one was just crap though.

I actually expected the first movie to suck though, so that perhaps made it easier for me to enjoy the bits that were good. I have never really liked Tomb Raider as a game, and was always quite cynical about their choice of a big titted heroine as the protagonist. It wouldn't have done nearly so well i

          • I was jsut surprised that it failed at both an action movie and a T&A movie. TO be honest, I expected the action movie portion to be rather lame. However, I thought they would at least get the T&A right. As you said, "a big titted heroine"; How do you screw that up? She has shown more T&A in a drama then she did in Tomb Raider.

I always thought this guy from this one soap opera reminded me of Max Payne. I always said if they make a movie he should play the part of Max Payne.

almost everything I saw reminded me of the first game.

the checkered floor, the candles, the crib and bedroom fading to unsaturated darkness, the bullet time!

This looks like someone might actually have gotten the source material right.

    • by SirSlud ( 67381 )

You mean the screen shots look good. How does that tell you about whether it will be fun to play? (ie, watch)

I really don't get these game-to-movie things. Make a good movie. Why would I care whether its based on a video game or not? Its either good or its not.

Look at the batman movies/games. Sure, the license is cool but the movies and games suck when they arn't fun to watch or play respectively, not based on how good they look.

      • You're not a gamer.

And, no, I meant the trailer for the movie looked good.

        • by SirSlud ( 67381 )

I guess playing videogames a minimum of 3 hours a day and being a game developer makes me not a gamer. :D

Its almost impossible to make a bad trailer. Most gamers just have woefully low standards. I don't really get the desire to see a game turned into a movie. I like good games, I like good movies. I don't need one industry to reference the other - that's just window dressing.

being a game developer doesn't make you a gamer. I've never met any developer that has time to PLAY games.

And I have ridiculously high standards.

I'm really tired of movie producers and uwe boll crapping on source material for original games. the fact that you don't get the desire to see a game turned into a movie further enforces my point that you are not a gamer. You sound like you're under the stockholm sydrome. I played Quake1 for 7 years, every night unless I wasn't sleeping at my place. I played q3 ra for 6 years. I own a 360 and a wii, and every single day I play games on them. I think Myst is one of the best games ever made. Blizzard can do no wrong, in general. I'm very passionate about faithful translations of in game experiences because I obviously loved the games.

I agree that writers and voice actors aren't payed enough. I think bad writing and horrible voice acting completely detract from a gaming experience. They make a game less fun.

You could have perfect gameplay but couple that with a stupid story which makes no sense and horrible voice acting and the game just won't fly in m

Hey, I liked Myst not because of the game play, but because of the atmosphere, the voice acting, and the story. You didn't like it, but thats more a matter of taste. I liked it for the same reasons you like some of your games: the experience. Between gameplay/story, neither can be king because different games need or use different amounts of them.

My main point is that games, as being able to provide a solid foundation for a movie, rank below both books and comic books in my world. (And I love comics.)

Actually, and this isn't an insult, but it occurs to me that you're a guy looking for a good story and good acting in a medium which is very much secondary to another medium which is fully founded on it. Why play games if what you're looking for is good acting/good story? At the end of the day, most of the money on a game HAS to be spent on programming, modelers and texture artists because if there's no game play, what you're sitting in front of at your computer is a movie? The different between you and I i

I forgot, 'ridiculously high standards' is one of the dumbest things you can say to somebody. We're talking about standards - if there is an absolute scale in the universe, well why bother? Standards vary from person to person and the reason I'm entering into this discussion is to adjust yours. Not make them better or worse - that transcends what standards mean.

      • probably trying to give a visual to "the flesh of fallen angels" which was mentioned several times during the hallucinations when Max had to deal with anyone on V. It looks promising from the trailer. I just hope it gets Remedy to make us a Max Payne 3 already! I loved 1 & 2,in fact I think I still have 2 installed. I may have to dust it off and enjoy some Max goodness. And as always this is my 02c,YMMV

I read that 3 is supposedly coming out in either late this year or early '09.

  • they manage to capture the spirit behind the voice-overs of max and the sound track, I will be thoroughly impressed. The cello solo from the intro/menu of Max Payne II still haunts me. That dark, gaping noiresque(?) feeling just permeates off the strings.

Thank god they didn't cast Keaneau Reeves as the main character.

"Like woah, the sky was totally raining down pitchforks of ice"

"The pills totally eased the pain, dude!"

    "I know bullet-fu!"

  • That said, the film could be decent enough. I'd be willing to bet that none of the allusions to Norse mythology make much of an appearance however.

    • What, you mean you bet it has nothing like the giant dark, winged, valkyrie-type-beast at the end of the trailer?

I'm assuming that was just a hallucination from Valkyr and any such metaphors that do show up (visual or other) will not tie together in any meaningful way. I may be surprised however.

  • I doubt it's just me, but does anybody else, no matter how good a movie is, really dislike the ones made from books/games?

I tend to nitpick every single little thing that deviates from the game/book. I feel like if they're going to make a movie, they should either make a seamless transition of the book's storyline (this is why I hated the Harry Potter movies...) or just come up with an original idea.

I did see Fight Club before I read the book, and thoroughly enjoyed both (though the book was a little

Formats are different though. A book can take you days to read, while a movie must tell its tale in 2 hours and a little bit. Likewise, a game can have you meander an abandoned hotel for an entire hour, looking for bad guys, a movie cannot. Adaptations are required, and not necessarily a bad thing.
    • by faloi ( 738831 )
It really depends for me, actually.

Generally speaking, I do a decent job at giving an adaptation an even chance. I really enjoyed Starship Troopers, the book, and actually enjoyed the movie...even though the two are radically different. I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies, even though there were some dramatic differences between the books.

The only thing I can think of that I didn't enjoy as much, and probably didn't give a fair shake, was the Dresden Files TV show. I really enjoy the books, and didn

  • They've seemed to have capture the dark edge of Max Payne. Now let's see how they handle the strong, humorous archetypes from the games without making them silly stereotypes. The Italian mobsters were caricatures in the games, but lovable caricatures that were as fun to shoot at as to listen to. Also, there's a hint of bullet time in the trailer, but I wonder how much of it is needed for the film to feel like a true Max Payne. If used right it could be just right, but it's another thing that easily becomes
  • Wow, can't wait for that movie to come out. Loved Mary Wahlberg in Shooter and in Four Brothers. Hoping that his performance in this movie is that good. Usually i am not so into this dark movies but it seems nice with good special effects. We'll see!
  • The preview looks good but if it truly was it would've been out during the summer or during the holidays. I'm sorry for being the bearer of bad news but anything from the second-half of August until early November is going to be mediocre at best. It's just not a time of the year that good movies come out.

One example (of many): Doom came out in October.

      • Last time I checked 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Shawshank Redemption' weren't based on video games and I will admit there are always exceptions. You also chose two movies that are considered classics but didn't receive popular praise until later in their runs. The truth was a burning green crack through my brain. Actors floated by on strings shooting blanks, while CGI animation filled in the gaps.

I was in an action movie. Funny as hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of.

  • Well, when I saw the cast, specially the choice for Jim Bravura, I was really pissed, and lost my faith about this movie.

However, I must admit that this trailer really brought me around! I love the Max Payne games, and the trailer sure has the right vibe. Lets just hope that they don't screw it all up... By the way, Mona looked (in those 3 seconds) really awesome!!
