Second GTA IV Patch Released, Early Look At DLC 41

IllusionMPN notes that a new patch has been issued for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV. It primarily contains bug fixes and optimization changes, though it's created an issue with some input devices. We're also starting to get hands-on previews of the upcoming downloadable "episodic content," The Lost and the Damned. Trailers and an achievement list are available as well. The original game's Niko Bellic won't have much of a role in the new content.

Damn, man.. Yet another patch and yet again it manages to screw something up?! We're either talking some major bad luck or an assinine QC.

I was actually looking forward to playing it on my brand new machine, until it finally came out and everyone started bitching about all the problems they were having. So instead, I took that money, and with the perfect storm of coincidences (huge amazon uk x-mas deal, plus near parity between the sterling pound and the euro at the time) and bought 3 games for my (also bra

Nah, it's just stupid submitters and ignorant editors all over again - the "issue" that's linked in the summary was actually caused by the first patch and is now fixed [rockstargames.com] in the second one:

LOOK / SPIN / STUCK KEY ISSUES

The issue has been fixed in the latest Title Update 1.0.2.0. However, with Title Update 1.0.1.0, some users are experiencing a Look/Spin/"Stuck Key" issue that interferes with user input.

I like how they "fixed" the issue.

At first, GTA didn't even notice my thrustmaster gamepad. Then after the first patch whenever I had it plugged in, the controller was noticed, but stuck pressing up and left. Nothing helped.

Now they simply reverted back to the previous ignoring of my gamepad. No -usedirectinput options etc. helped.

Great work guys, keep it up! Why won't game developers stick to the directinput libraries? They support every gamepad. And don't give me the crap about next-gen controllers. If GT

If GTA IV works on the PS3, why can't the PC version handle a PlayStation-like gamepad?

Because, let's face it, the only way to play GTA on a PC ever since GTA III is using keyboard and mouse.

I've got an XBox 360 controller right here, but I would never consider using it for a shooter like GTA - autoaiming is just lame. And it's not like there's many racing missions in it that would somehow get much easier with a gamepad...

Prince of Persia, Mirror's Edge or Trackmania United, on the other hand, are great for use with the controller, though.

I couldn't get GTA4 to recognize my mouse when trying to change many of the control settings. I don't like using my 360 controller and I don't like the default WASD keyboard/mouse setup. This has got to be one of the worst ports ever.

    • The game forgot all settings again
    • Redoing them, again some of them didn't stick, and I had to redo them
    • I think they've done something to the sounds. It seems the klack of shoes while walking, pedestrian sounds, environment feeling inside cars, and such is much clearer now. It feels like they enabled EAX or something. This is good
    • Shadows are fixed, they're passable now and not like this [jupix.info]. Also, the shadow detail slider now actually changes something (how far away and detailed the game draws shadows)
    • Playing pool is still broken, it's like a have a controller constantly pushing the rod forward. However this can't be controller incompatibility since I have none, and since this behavior occurs nowhere else in the game. This only means I can't play pool. (And anyway, I can't understand why they changed the pool controls from San Andreas, they were awesome compared to the console ones we have now. It's like Rockstar had a strange perversion to have as many functions in the game as possible controlled by the keyboard.)
    • The longer I played, the slower the game seemed to load textures.
    • Couple of hours into a game session I got some hitches of a few whole seconds. Then after a while I got a yellow screen before a scene change. Again a few minutes went by and the game froze, taking the OS (XP) down with it.

Overall some nice improvements, but disappointigly, the major issues of the game remained untouched (DRM and consoley UI).

DRM has stopped me buying this game. I bought GTA3 and Vice City for PC and San Andreas for PS2, and was really looking forward to playing GTA IV.

Why does Rockstar hate me so much? I want to buy their game, but they insist on installing all manner or crap on my PC. If it just used Steam's DRM I might have got it. Maybe one day I'll get a XBOX 360, but it's hardly worth it for one game.

I'm now going to have to wait until a warez group releases a DRM-free version. It's not like I can even buy the game and the

Same here: I was going to buy it from Steam, but since they insist on installing their crappy DRM as well as Valve's, they've lost another sale.

Which I'm actually somewhat happy about, now I know how slow and buggy it is.

That's not "an issue with some input devices". It's basically just a xbox360 controller or nothing. Microsoft decided that its new XInput libraries will only support "next gen" controllers. That is only the xbox360-like ones. Any PlayStation-like controllers simply won't work.

I'm mighty pissed because I bought my Thrustmaster 3-in-1 recently and absolutely love it. Tough luck, they say. And I'm stuck with the mouse&keyboard combo.

Damn you MS and your Games for Windows crap :/

    • by 4D6963 ( 933028 )

Huh? I have a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2, which is very much a PS2-like controller, and it's officially supported and works great.

Regarding controls, the only thing botched up is the mouse control in vehicle cockpit mode, they got it very wrong.

      • by Fumus ( 1258966 )
Yes. It seems they just decided to support a few Logitech products, and that's it. WTF?
My pad worked out of the box on everything before. Now Microsoft decided that I need to buy an xbox controller in order to play PC games with a gamepad?
What's next? Supporting only Microsoft-branded mice with a maximum of three buttons and a scroller? (because that's essentially what they've done with xinput.)
    • by KDR_11k ( 778916 )

Why exactly do companies join this Games for Windows crap anyway, is there something in it for them? There's no platform royalties that could go down, there's no gatekeeper that could tell them they can't release their game there without the label, it's fucking ugly and seems to end mostly in compatibility issues and crap with the "Windows Live" service that doesn't seem to do anything either except charge money for some features (and I suspect the game developer won't see any of that money).

    • Yes, this is unbelievable.
I bought Mirror's Edge yesterday, only to come home and find out that my Logitech DualShock2 gamepad was not properly working: When you press forward, you walk backwards, and vice versa.

Writing on their forums/support, does not help me at all. The only solution is to use "Logitech Profiler", an application that allows you to bind key-presses to the gamepad... But I don't want a f*cking workaround; I want my gamepad to be supported out of the box!

I've decided I'm going to retur
  • I won't buy it until I see a patch that removes, in entirety, *any* reliance on anything to do with SecurROM.

  • New patch resolved my crashing every 10-15 minutes problem, redoing the first missions over and over again is good recipe for insanity!
  • I just have to mention this...

If you play gta iv offline, you have to download the patch, and it's in .rar format.

I am dumbfounded as to how this came about.

Windows cannot natively recognize or open a .rar format file.

What's even sillier is what happens next. "How do I open/install a .rar file?"

try googling "gta iv rar". These results do not mention winrar.

    sigh.
