Well the article says he had assaulted her more than once. Before she reported to her mom but apparently nothing was done about it?. The next time he tried she was ready. Maybe she had it near her and grabbed it as he was pulling her pants down? The article doesn't give many details but it's not hard to imagine various circumstances in which she might get a shot if she already knew what was coming.
