bwoodcock writes "In December, the ITU, led by member states China, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Venezuela, staged an attempted coup on the system of Internet governance. Their goal was to overthrow the open and transparent system of Internet governance that ensures the Internet’s freedom and accessibility, and replace it with their own central point of absolute control, through which policies of censorship and repression could be enacted. The U.S. government is responsible for 7.7% ($10.95M in 2011) of the entire world’s governmental contributions to the ITU. This is a "we the people" petition to cut this self-defeating expenditure and redirect it to supporting the free and open Internet."
