The very first MUD was created (coded) by Roy Trubshaw in autumn 1978 while he was at at Essex University. The project was then handed over to Richard Bartle in 1980.

In light of Richard Bartle's work and significant contributions, it would be correct to call him one of the creators of MUD, but he was not the only creator, nor was he the first, which Richard Bartle himself acknowledges in his email [mud.co.uk] dated 15 November 1990.

    • The article credits both. I've reworded slightly to make sure it's clear though: "The game launched in 1978, developed by Essex students Roy Trubshaw and, later, Richard Bartle."

"It ain't so much the things we don't know that get us in trouble. It's the things we know that ain't so." -- Artemus Ward aka Charles Farrar Brown
