destinyland writes "IBM just announced a push for open source avatars with Second Life's creators, Linden Labs. Then they joined Google, Cisco, Intel, Sony, Microsoft, and Motorola for the first planning session on how to make it happen. "It's an obstacle to the development and spread of virtual worlds," said IBM, amid speculation about futuristic "3-D internet" interfaces, and some heavy-hitters are taking it seriously. There's already speculation that Google is working on a 3-D social networking environment incorporating Google Earth and Google Maps. Earth could become n interoperable virtual worlds networked 3-D"
