Journal Short Circuit's Journal: Session 1 Index & Discussion

Discuss Session 1 episodes, and get links to each, here.

OK, so in session 1 I advanced two levels and became very comfortable with combat. I also discovered my teamwork needs improvement, and I keep forgetting to add my strength ability bonus to my damage rolls. (Two Dwarves and the Seven Orcs would have been over much sooner had I remembered.)

What I'll probably do is throw together a PHP script that automatically calculates the appropriate die rolls. (Yeah, I know Javascript would be better. PHP is the language I'm working on learning right now. Give me a break.) It might even evolve into a full PHP-based D&D character sheet.

But back on topic.

Yes, if you were sharp, you would have caught several mechanics failures. When someone drops their sword, which seemed to happen all too often by the end of the session. (Around a third of the "misses" reported in The Seven Orcs were actually critical fumbles. I suspect God really does play dice.)

I've also been introspecting as to the Ralek character. He's definitely a spiritual person, devoted to his God. However, he definitely has a mean streak about him. He'll pray to his god one moment, but be badmouthing his enemies the next. To me, that's a dichotomy. It's like Pat Robertson gone violent.

As far as AoR is concerned, my writing is getting better. Even people who don't play D&D enjoyed reading Fire Elementals. (I highly encourage you to check it out, if you skipped it.) I try to pack as much detail in there as possible, and to keep presenting "A swings, and misses. B swings, and misses. C swings, and misses." in new and nonboring ways. If you have suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.

Here's a list of the episodes:
Adventures of Ralek #1
Ralek gets a Re-Match.
The third battle.
A second re-match
Ralek and Voltore team up.
Ralek, Voltore, and an Ape named Ape
Two-on-Two
Fire Elementals
The Red Wyrmling
Two dwarfs and the Seven Orcs

And a short blurb, About AoR.

From now on, only the session indeces will have comments enabled. So if you have something to say, this is where you should say it. And I do have questions for you. What did you think of the character? Of the roleplaying? Of the mechanical aptitude? Even better, what did you think of the writing style? Where can it be improved?

It is not well to be thought of as one who meekly submits to insolence and intimidation.
