Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Site Opens 27

Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to a Gamespot story about a new official Capcom site for the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter series. Although much of the actual page is in Japanese, celebrations apparently include a music competition where you can remix Street Fighter tunes, a cosplay competition where you dress up as your favorite SF character, and a traveling exhibition of Street Fighter art. Hard to believe it's been 15 years since the first Street Fighter, and 12 since the launch of Street Fighter II.

  • How many versions of Street Fighter II WERE there? It seemed like for a time they were releasing one a day. Street Fighter II. Super Street Fighter II. Super Street Fighter II Championship Edition. Super Street Fighter II Hyper Turbo... etc etc.

Not including the different revisions and the hacked versions, they are (USA names)...

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
      Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
      Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
      Super Street Fighter II Turbo

      • If I had mod points, I'd mod ya up for that!

Great idea for a site. SF2 was the first beat 'em up I ever played. (Well, unless you count IK+ on the C64). I prefer Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Thrill Kill etc... But SF2 will always hold a special place in my heart.

Off to run this site through the babelfish (who thankfully do Japanese to English now).
        • hehe i thought I was the only person who had Thrill Kill, and also the subsequent redesign which was Wu-tang...
          • Thrill Kill can be found on certain P2P networks. For those that don't know the history, the game was completed and ready to ship, then EA bought Virgin, and nuked the title saying it was too violent. Disgruntled developers leaked it onto the net. The sad thing is, it's no worse than Mortal Kombat.

I think the engine was also used for the X-Men Mutant Academy games. TK was certainly inventive, and the engine is very good.

Well worth checking out (PSX BTW.)
            • I think that the fighting engine for it is rather horrible, actually... but yes, the character designs were wonderful. For instance: a man with a severed limb as a weapon! ha! If you want to see the game that *did* come out, it's called Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. It directly uses the engine, creates a lame game of fighting opponents for each chamber token of the 36 and you can pick from any of the members of the Wu-Tang rap group. (Ghostface Killah, U-God, Methodman, Rza, Genius, etc)
  • Man, I remember heading down to the arcade and mashing the hell outta the buttons on this game.

I spent a ton of time on it.

    15 years already?

    Wow. I feel old.

you can remix Street Fighter tunes

Make sure they actually give you permission to re-mix the tunes. Otherwise they could slap the winner... or perhaps just the losers >;-) ... in jail for copyright violation!

In the US, yes, but if you're in Japan it's completely legal!

    • [snip]

All that, and you seem to have missed the original Street Fighter [klov.com].

    • While we're nitpicking... :D

You also forgot SNK vs Capcom 1, 2, EO and Chaos (Arcade/NGPC/DC/PSX/PS2/GC), SvC Cardfighters Clash 1 and 2 (NGPC), Street Fighter EX 1, 2, 3 and plus-alpha (Arcade/PSX - no, I didn't like them much either) and Capcom Fighting All Stars (canned). They're pretty much all mentioned in the character ranking poll on the site...
  • Damn I hadn't the height of the arcade when I was playing that one, it was so great. The 2nd was not a revolution compared to the 1st but it got all the success.

I have to say that the original SF2 is one of the best video games ever. I put so many quarters into that game! To this day if I find an original SF2 machine I have to put in a quarter and try my luck once more. I had played Karate Champ and even SF1 but for some reason this game's player vs. player option really "worked" for me. The controls were intuitive (pull back for block, as oppossed to the "block" button that ruined Mortal Kombat for me) and the special moves were easy to use, but not SO easy that a bunch of button slaps could make you a great player. The first time I beat M. Bison I yelled and screamed at the machine, I had DEFEATED this insidious enemy! When the SNES version came out I sent my brother to the store with 80 hard earned dollars (do you remember they charged $80 when it first came out???) and we played for, heh, well, years on end. I got my money's worth and then some. I love this game and I will be on the lookout for special SF2 events.

I found one at a burger stand near the airport in Honolulu back in 99. That's probably the one place you can talk your gf/wife into going. ;)
  • Man, the fireball was insanely powerful. If you could get one of those out, the game was yours.
Sure, I was a button masher back then, but hey I managed a dragon punch and hurricane kick every now and then.

You are strong, but remember, there are guys like you all over the world...

    Or something like that IIRC

In first place, Chun-Li, has 255 votes, 3 times the 83 votes of Ryu, who's in the second place.

    Enjoy. [gamespot.com]
  • wandering up to the original game in a dusty arcade when it was still new, and looking at those huge buttons and brusing my wrists on it.

Later, when SF2:tWW came out, I was relieved to find that they had replaced those huge pneumantic buttons, but I fed that machine so many quarters it was pathetic.

I held off on buying a SNES, then they came out with SF2 for it, and I am almost certain the first day I had that SNES and the game (which, if memory serves me, was actually 10 or 11 years ago today [I know thi
