Full Throttle Sequel Cancelled 34

Thanks to IGN PC for their article indicating that LucasArts have cancelled Full Throttle:Hell On Wheels, the partially completed PC sequel to the classic point 'n click adventure. Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts said: "We do not want to disappoint the many fans of Full Throttle and hope everyone can understand how committed we are to delivering the best quality gaming experience that we possibly can." The official Full Throttle sequel homepage has been removed, although its Google cache is still available.

Don't worry, I am sure Sam and Max will be cancelled. Seems no gaming company, even LucasArts, is willing to spend money on the adventure market.

    • Yeah Sam n' Max was THE best Lucas Arts game and anybody who disagrees has coleslaw in their brain :)

I'm really looking forward to the new one... It better not suck.

The article doesn't mention the reason... but I guess no sequel at all is better than a crappy sequel.

Full Throttle was my third favorite Lucas Arts game (Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle being my favorite and second favorite).

Too bad, because I'm an adventure games fan and Lucas Arts always delivered in storyline and gameplay, and I haven't played a decent game since Longest Journey.

I remember when "The Colonel's Bequest" came out (I'm *that* old): interesting, imaginative, fun. Unfortunately Sierra seemed commited to releasing crap after crap for many years. Nice to see LucasArts has the guts to pull the plug before releasing a stinker (that might not have been the reason, but they are not telling).
    • Ya I have heard rumors that the brilliant people behind Full Throttle's humor and storyline were not involved with the Full Throttle sequel. If this is true, then had LucasArts released this game, they would've been "pulling an Accolade". As some of you no doubt recall, Accolade released the dismal Star Control 3 as a 'sequel' to Star Control 2 without involving the original creators. Hence, Accolade was just exploiting the brand name to make money off crap. If the Full Throttle sequel was indeed crap,
      • Game companies should never try to sell sequels without the genius of the original creators behind it ...
Well, in Lucasarts alone, Day of the Tentacle was made by a different team to Maniac Mansion, and the Monkey Island creators left after making 2, so 3 and 4 had 2 completely different teams working on them.
      • It's not a rumor at all... Tim Schafer is busy with his own company [doublefine.com] now. Disclaimer: I work there.

I have pretty high hopes for Sam and Max 2, since Steve Purcell is involved.

What?! No Monkey Island! Loom? Indy? Maniac Mansion? :-) And you call yourself a Lucas Fan! HeHeHe :-) You're favorites would be my 4, 5, and 6th. favorites. Heck, I love every Lucas Arts (adventure) game -- it's hard to decide which I like more (after Monkey Island 1 & 2, that is :)

Funny that you mention, "The Colonel's Bequest" as I was thinkinga bout it last mont
    • This is sad news indeed. But I think it shows what many people have been saying for some time - the point'n'click adventure game is a dead genre.

I thought that the announcement of such a game from the people who made the best of the genre could signal a ressurection. I was wrong - and we're all the worse off for it.

Hate to sound so negative but canceling it is probably a good thing. Take a look at the game feature and you can see that this time around they are trying to make FT into some kind of fighting game (with story, maybe). I best remember FT as an *adventure* game with a great story... it probably for the best that they don't ruin it.

However maybe they can reuse the current gamess assets (designs, models, textures) and make it into a 3D adventure game, like Monkey Island or Sam & Max...

Ugh. Please, no. The 2D artwork is amazing in those games, you'd lose that even on modern 3D hardware.

I think these types of games are due for a comeback any year now. 3D is getting to the point where there aren't going to be any more radical advances. Eventually enough polygons with enough textures with enough lighting effects will be availa

How do we know that production was stopped because of coding/story quality? Maybe they were threatened with a law suit or rights were tied up. Maybe they just decided there wasn't enough of a market for the game. Maybe they implimented features for hardware that was canceled. You can bet it probably wasn't quality alone th
      • Well, the Lucas Arts press release quoted above has an overemphasis on quality. I'll admit I'm reading between the lines, but that does imply a quality problem to me.
      • Actually, given that an interesting plot and humor are the most cruicial elements of an adventure game, I can see why they would cancel development if they didn't truly have a quality product. It would be like making a FPS with a crappy engine, fans wouldn't shell out for it. And being a fan, I wouldn't either. I would rather be slightly disappointed now than largely disappointed with a release of a franchise bandwagon.

Lucasarts has released some of my favorite games of all time, the best IMO being Grim Fandango. At first I think "Dammit, I was really looking forward to that, there hasn't been a decent adventure game done in a while and Lucas is the company to bring one out." But it would only piss us all off if they released FT2 and it turned out to not only suck, but was obviously so bad that it shouldn't have passed production. Of course, we don't know why they cancelled it; they could have decided that their other higher profile games took priority, or they could have realized they had essentially created nothing new. So lets hope that Lucas will either resurrect the project at some point or will begin development on something like Grim Fandango II.

I would much rather have them focus on something new and unique instead of renewing older, more successful titles. I loved all of lucasarts older adventure games, but when I hear of a company creating sequels to an existing property that is several years old, I generally think they've just run out of unique ideas and decided to milk the existing fan-base for profit. (see: Starwars)

I hope someday this studio can continue to make really new, interesting creations, because I have very fond memories of everything from Maniac Mansion to Grim Fandango.
  • when FT came out it was also on the mac, working in a design firm we all had macs and this was one of the most enjoyable games. I still remember co-workers calling me at midnight asking how I got through the junkyard.

Overall I hope they haven't given up on the game, It would be great to have a deserving sequel as opposed to something that my kids would make fun of me for.
  • I had already gotten myself a copy of the Bone Jackal's CDs.

    Bah.

For those who didn't know, they did all of the music for Full Throttle... Thanks to the game, I have to say I liked some songs more without the lyrics, but the first song in the credits rules. I forget what it's called, but I think it was track 4. So does "We Want our Brothers Back".

A quote from Tim Schafer, creator and director of the original Full Throttle, from mixnmojo.com (THE Lucasarts Adventure Fansite):

"I heard they just couldn't go on without the emotional support of Tom Sarris. I mean, Tom was the person Ben Throttle was based on. Not a lot of people know that. So I guess they finally just realized there was no way to do it with out him."
