TheAlchemist writes "Ever think about using a video game to propose to your (hopefully) wife-to-be? One of the forum members on AtariAge has, and he's planning on using an Atari 2600 to display a proposal message on-screen in the middle of a game! Paul Slocum (author of the upcoming Homestar Runner RPG game) has offered his services to modify Donkey Kong so that when the first level is completed, a proposal message will be displayed on-screen. AtariAge will build the cartridge free of charge, and the only remaining missing piece is the custom label! Tim is holding a label design contest for his marriage proposal cart, the winner of which will receive a $25 gift certificate in the AtariAge Store. The contest runs until April 17th, and you can learn all the details and how you can participate by stopping by the AtariAge Contests Forum." There's already at least one creatively-designed illustration entered into the competition.

The anticipation of having to propose is bad enough, just imagine the anticipation of knowing that you HAVE TO BEAT LEVEL 1 in order to even get TO THE PROPOSAL.

Of course, if he couldn't beat level 1, she probably wouldn't want to be with him anyway.

Aside from the anticipation factor, this is going to be a GREAT event. I hope they post the outcome here on /....

Of course, this will only work if your girlfriend likes to play video games. A girlfriend that loves to play video games -- *sigh* every geek's dream. Most women would think... you are spending waaay too much time playing games! Needless to say, my wife fits in the latter category most of the time, although you will find her playing yetisports from time to time. :-)

What if she is not able to beat level 1? Most of the girl 'gamers' I know pretty much plays things like pokemon and FFX-2. They would get pwned by donky kong and fly the game out of the window due to all that frustration.

Maybe he should also heck the game so Mario uses god mode?

The proposal should be at the beginning of the game where the bright blue sky opens up to the optimistic Mario under the shining yellow sun. Then she should play the level and get pummeled with barrels at the worst times possible. After all, isn't that what marriage is like?

A man proposed to his girlfriend via Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. He created a skatepark in there and they played it together. He created a gap so that when you grinded the longest rail in the level, and it was named "Becky, will you marry me?" Only substitute Becky for whatever the girl's name was, I don't remember.

It was talked about in a really old issue of OPM.

Why are there so many comments about women not being able to play games? There are a lot of women who are really good. For me, it would be a very sad day if I couldn't get past level 1 of any game. (And yes, I am of the female persuasion.)
For those of you with girlfriends/spouses/significant others: maybe if you hand the controller to your ladies once in a while, they'll be able to play better.

  He double hockeysticks. I bought my wife an X-box so she'd stay off of my PC! (Both are in the living room however, so we stop and watch each others games, and give each other ideas and tips. The family that games together stays together.)
