World Of Pirates Creators Interviewed As Open Beta Approaches 12

Thanks to GamersWithJobs for its interview with the creators of PC MMO title World Of Pirates, a 2D game (not to be confused with forthcoming 3D MMO Pirates Of The Burning Sea) in which "the basic idea was to recreate the gameplay and feel of Pirates! and put it into an online environment." Topics discussed include PvP ("...one of the basic design premises behind the game. And features such as a bounty being put on someone's head certainly help the competition among the players"), and post-launch plans ("We're going to increase the strategy portion of the game, lending it a Civilization-style touch. We're hoping that this part will become more appealing to those players who want to take a break from or are tired of their pirate career.") In related news, the official World Of Pirates website reveals an imminent change: "After 2 years of closed beta testing... from Monday 5th July 2004, everyone can join the Beta test."

This is awesome. I still often play Pirates! myself, it is a game never really duplicated or bettered. Until, perhaps, now. I'd still prefer a standalone version that can be played single-player and offline, but maybe in time that will come.

I can't wait for the open beta to begin! I always liked to play the ruthless, merciless pirate and was dissappointed that I could always get away with it. Maybe this game will (at last) let me live out my swashbuckling fantasies with a bit of real challenge. Rape, pillage, plunder! Woo!

Don't know if you were hinting at this or what...but Sid Meyer is actually remaking (modernizing?, porting?) Pirates! to the new generation.

It kind of has something to do with Pirates! winning every 'Game of the Century' contest ever held.

also don't forget battlefield pirates [bfpirates.com] - it's the funnest battlefield mod i've played - better than desert combat and better than stunts... sabre's and muskets and sloops and galleons and KOMODO DRAGONS! ;) (and no i'm not affiliated with the mod'ers)

  • ..considering the number of warez and other such "helpful" networks, it is quite an apt title, don't you think? - "World of Pirates"..

Or maybe its just me who relates to it so much...ouch!
  • Last post suckers!
  • So I finally downloaded the client and was hoping to jump online to check out this game, but it seems the server(s) are full. I checked the official game forums and it seems this is pretty common problem right after the /. story came out here. Perhaps the furor will die down in time.
    • Got on last night, finally. Two quick hints: first, make yourself a quick reference card for all the commands, and second get yourself a map of the Caribbean.
