Classic Gamer PDF Magazine Hits Second Issue 21

Skyler writes "The second issue of the recently revived, formerly paper-only Classic Gamer Magazine is now online as a freely downloadable PDF. The cover story for this issue discusses the history of James Bond videogames, but that's just the beginning, as this issue is chock full of gaming articles, reviews, classic ads, and much more." We previously covered Classic Gamer's debut PDF issue - the UK print magazine Retro Gamer is also worth seeking out if you enjoy this type of rampant gaming nostalgia.

    • For me actually playing the games was easier than putting in that code >_ I didn't quite have the dexteriry to get it all right.
      • No way on God's green earth I could have finished Contra or Life Force without Up Up Down down etc... 3 lives vs. 40 (or was it 99?).

        And Ikari Warriors, that one was easy. A B B A ..
        • It was 30 lives, or REST as Contra put it.

Back in my prime video game days, I used to able to beat Contra without dying once. If I died, it was always in one of the same two or three places. I wish I had the time to play games to death like I used to do back when I was younger.

          30 in Contra 1, 10 in Contra 2.
          • And super-cool nifty weapons upgrades de-luxe in Gradius (which rocked ;) )
            • Gradius still rocks.

I attempted for about the 40th time to get through Gradius 4. Darned if I can get through what I think is the final level. Thing is, you can only use that code once per level, although they stack.. .so if you use it on the first level and then die on the 4th, you have 3 left to use...

By the time I got to the end of the game, I must have been on a one to one level. Even continuing, you can't re-use the code....

I'm still waiting for Gradius 5 to come out. Looks beautiful, and hopefu

I can't remember the exact details though. I remember that I got REALLY close to beating Life Force without the cheat code. I think I died at the salamander at the end - or very close to him.

Several years later, I tried it again, and I was really rusty at those games. They are still some of my all-time favorites though. Konami was one of th

Yes, but omit the Select if you were like me, playing 1-player because you had nobody to play with.
Or reinsert the Select if you were coordinated enough to play with two controllers simultaneously...

Having moved twice in the last year, I've grown rather fond of the idea of having electronic magazines as opposed to paper versions. I used to be really against the idea of paying for unique organizations of electrons until I nearly broke my back throwing away all my issues of Maxim to lighten the load.

PDAs are becoming more and more suited to this type of work. Sony has Palms now that run at 320 by 480. Sure beats the 240 by 320 I'm running on my PocketPC. Death to paper!

Almost every game features high res color graphics. I thought it was meant to be a retro game mag.
  • Sadly, what I belatedly learned from this posting is that Silas Warner has passed away. For those of you not sighing sadly at this moment, Silas was the programmer of the original killer PC game, Castle Wolfenstein and you would see his name each time you started yet another round of that all time classic. I would argue that Silas was the very first game designer well known by name, and his passing is sadly noted by all of us whose introduction to gaming was CW and Zork.
  • Are we going to get this story every month now for the entire run of the magazine?
