Taking a queue from the Douglas Adams definition of 'trilogy', I see...
    • Or Kevin Smith's 'Jersey Trilogy', that is now continuing on to it's sixth movie with the confirmed Clerk's sequel.
    • well, you can just make a trilogy, a three-piece-something. ..and then you can add sequels to that later on. just because it's the same character or game series doesn't really mean it would have to be "in" the same trilogy as some other games with similar name.

the reason why they're just calling it metal gear solid instead of metal gear is that most gamers don't remember metal gear from msx/nes....
    • Or this is the last we will see of... [Coloniel voice]SNAAAAAKE!!![/voice] as there are, you know, other, non-Solid Snakes.
  • "new in-depth gameplay features such as close quarters combat (CQC)"

Isn't that what MGS2 boasted when it came out? How it had added clode combat options such as the Katana and more detailed hand to hand stuff. It's hard to wade through the random hype and the junk with game releases these days..
    • MGS2 implemented close quarters combat ANIMATIONS, which you initiated by the complicated maneuver of pressing a button. This time they expanded variety and interactivity of the encounters with the help of a military advisor.
  • ... My wife belived that I've give up spending money on console games, I was just wating for StarCraft Ghost and this baby, 1 of 2 so far. (I know halo 2 was a 'must buy', I just don't have an X-Box)

    and now this ?
Sony and Microsoft must have got together and decided that parents had too much money spare this christmas

Konami is banking too much on Metal Gear sequels. They need to cut the sequel numbers street fighter style, and start calling the game Turbo, Alpha, EX.

Anyways, Halo 2 is just another UT2004. It's way over rated.

Just another UT2004 with hell of a single player mode. That's what most Bungie games are really about.

After seeing some of the screenshots of this game, I am amazed at how far the PS2 has come in terms of graphics. I suppose developers are really starting to tap into the more 'difficult'parts of the PS2 hardware.

Personally I think that the Metal Gear Solid series are among the best games ever made. Although some found the cutscenes and story elements in MGS2 boring, I found them really immersive and I hope that MGS3 maintains the cinematic level of MGS2 while expanding the gameplay side of things.
  • Is anyone actually going to be playing this instead of Half-Life 2? It will hardly get any media attention due to everybody focusing on HL2 so many people may just miss the release. One of my friends is a rabid MGS fan and I haven't even heard anything from him about it. Wouldn't it be better if they just released it next week?
    • I have no interest in HL2. I don't play FPS games let alone games on the PC. MGS3 sounds good to me.
    • Gamefaqs did a poll [gamefaqs.com] last week before and there was more interest in MGS3 and Metroid Prime 2 than Half-Life 2. Of course polling fans on gamefaqs isn't exactly scientific it did surprise me.

The PC market is a niche market though, and all the problems with Steam could end up turning even more people off of PC gaming.

    • console market > pc gaming market
      ps2 market > xbox market
      therefore:
      mgs3 market > halo 2 market > half life 2 market
keep in mind that the shashdot crowd might be a little (obviously) biased in this respect.
your average joe gamer with a ps2 in his living room and no computer (or maybe a basic desktop pc without a graphics card to brag about) couldn't care less about half-life 2. the only blockbuster game that really stands a chance of overshadowing mgs3's release is gta:sa.
      • But it is true that gamefaqs is a VERY biased sample. They love rpgs, and do not care to much for FPSs.

Do remember that, on the most popular game contest, HalfLife 1 was beaten by Metroid Prime in the first rounds. If you ask me, MP is a better game than HL, but, historically, this is not so true, as HL was more revolutionary in its day than MP ever was.

Compare this with a similar competition in gamespy, where HalfLife won (second place SMB3).

It is simply because, the first ones require faqs, while a faq
      • MGS3 > Half life > Halo 2. maybe. Remember Half Life will power counter strike source, and Counterstike has more players than any 3 Pc games combined.
    • HL2: Steam.

      MGS3: No Steam.

I'll be playing MGS3. HL2 isn't even on the radar.
    • Hate to burst your bubble, but MGS3, GTA: SA and San Andreas will all probably out-sell HL2.

I love FPS games, but all things considered, HL2 isn't near the top of mine (nor the majority of peoples) "to play" list.

That said, width MGS3 come out.. wouldn't it have been better for Valve to release HL2 next week?

confirmed that there will be a Metal Gear Solid 4...this news casts the 'Final Episode of the Metal Gear Solid Trilogy', Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, in a new light.

Lowly Production Manager: Sorry, sir - it won't be completely finished in time for Christmas. I will commit sepeku for this dishonor.

Boss: No need, grasshopper. We will simply ship it and let the ending dangle. Finish the story line with #4, and then we will consider your ritual suicide.

LPM: Yes sir, thank you sir.

Heh heh. I love completely ludicrious stereotypes.

Makes more sense when applied to Halo 2. The game is fucking UNFINISHED (witness the ending, or don't - same thing).

And then it flashes something about February or some bullshit, when suckers will probaqbly be expected to download the ending levels and the end of the game altogether. Halo 2 is fucking lame. n00b food.
  • When can we get it in the UK? FFS... Damn Jap and USA only releases stink!

I was reading an article the 16'th about MGS4 and it mentioned this was coming out today. I was all Huh? This is probably the worst release in any franchises history.
Next to no advertisements about it, coming out a week after Halo2 and the DAY of Half Life 2; a game which while not in the same genre pretty much counter balances MGS to a T*. Someone droped the ball here.

    * Think: Story make sense = GOOD.
    • My thoughts exactly. I read the headline *here* and thought: "the stupid editor forgot to mention that it released in Japan today. It almost looks like it was release in the US."

Then I realized that I now have to find $55... and fast.
  • No, they haven't confirmed there will be one. The oft-misinterpreted statement simply says there will be more games in the MetalGear franchise, which includes MG: Ghost Babel on the GBC and MetalGear Acid on the PSP. They're probably not going to be called "MetalGear Solid" sequels.
  • Let us not forget the unmittigated disater that was the MGS2 story line. While the gameplay was good the plot was written by 666 old godzilla, soap opera and tales fron the crypt writers, stoned out on glue, buzzed up on caffine and living in a small mental asylum, with 333 monkey secretaries working on rusty typewriters.

Hopefully the same mistake has not been made during the production of MGS3.
  • Everyone knows who "Snake" really is, there's no point in hiding it any more.
