Europe Sees Launch of Nintendo DS 35

Eurogamer has coverage from last week's launch of the Nintendo DS handheld in the EU. The article covers the improving opinion of the handheld in Europe, and sales are reportedly already going quite well. From the article: "The dual screens were sensibly sized, the touch screen robust and responsive, the stylus well kept, the buttons pretty well distributed, the size and weight of the thing surprisingly comfortable, the list of games as long as your arm and the technical gubbins and service potential far greater than any other handheld." The BBC has details as well.

They must have gotten an entirely different set of games. Last I checked, there were about 15 or so games for it here in the states, which even in a large typeface would make a list roughly the length of my hand.

Its the first handheld i've bought. The touch screen really had me interested. Just thinking of how they could use it. The battery life is great too. Its been lasting a day of a lot of play since i got it.
Which was one of my reasons for getting it instead of a psp. I wanted a handheld game device. Not a dvd playing, graphic intensive (read: battery hog) handheld. I already have a dvd player and would buy a portable dvd player if i felt the need for one. I doubt the psp will gain the support of the film industry. How many films are actually going to get released on UMDs.
I'm very happy with its features; wireless multiplayer + single cart multiplayer, touch screen and the microphone. I have an xbox for the more graphic intensive games. When i'm playing a handheld gameplay is much more important.
Now i'm looking forward to the proposed internet play with Animal Crossing DS.
My only quibble is the launch games are a bit lacking. Only mario 64 ds and wario touched interested me and wario was sold out.
    • That's a shame, Wario Touched is a blast. It's worth staking out your game store for their next shipment.

I had heard that Wario Ware Touched was too gimmicky and to some degree lacked the manic spark of the original one. Until I played it on a demo unit in a store yesterday. If anything, the intuitive nature of the touchscreen-based games makes it even better than the GBA version. I'll probably buy it tomorrow when I buy the Incredibles DVD. It will be a welcome companion to Mario 64 and the Metroid Prime demo. And I might end up getting Yoshi's Touch and Go later in the week.
      • Yeah i already stalked them when i bought the system. They (Game) put me on a waiting list and i got PGA GOLF DS instead with word i could swap it when they got it in. They said there next shipment is on tuesday (tomorrow) so i'll toddle along and get it then.

On another note. PGA GOLF DS is very boring. Even with the touch screen swinging method it just isn't as fun as the xbox version. Not sure why, the graphics are fine but i couldn't do more than 2 or 3 holes before getting bored. Its multicard too. I h
    • After just owning Mario DS for a while I picked up WarioWare and Ridge Racer DS yesterday. Both are tons of fun! I can't wait to see some DS users walking around so we can jump into a 6 player, single-card, race in Ridge Racer!

Project Rub (Feel the Magic in the U.S.) has a WarioWare-esque feel to it, if not in graphics style and setting then in gameplay. It's a cool collection of interesting, themed mini-games.

I'd pick up WarioWare Twisted for sure, but Project Rub should be a good time-killer until you can nab your copy. Sort of like a warm-up. :) I bought it mostly because I'm a fan of Sonic Team and I'd heard that it does some cool things when you have a Sega GBA game in the GBA slot of the DS unit (it does...it unlocks so
      • I just played Feel the Magic last night (rented it from GameRang.com). I have to say it has some amusing mini games. Just the fact that they have a game where you have to blow into the microphone to move a sail boat says it all. It's not a game that I would buy but it's a great rental. This game shows the potential of DS and I'm looking forward to the other games coming out later this year.
  • Yes the gba does have a library of games as long as your arm. Of course, if you want to take advantage of that list, you could buy a 79 $ GBA SP, and get a machine better designed to play those games.

Really, although I can appreciate the idea behind the system (touch screen seemes gimicky still, but 2 screens - cant wait for a developer to take advantage of it. Advance wars ds anyone?) I fully believe that Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot developing for 2 handheld platforms. The only redeeming

    • Actually I find DS better to play GBA games on, it have better sound and more clear screen than a GBA SP. I know since I actually own both. Althought it can be awkard to control certain games on a DS, since the select and start button is not very reachable... And the DS is around 2x of a GBA SP's size, but it's not much bigger than a orginal GBA.
  • on releasing the "Technical Gubbins" for the US model? I hope so! That's the mega-ton announcement I've been waiting for!
  • From Eurogamer article:

The only thing it couldn't do was let us play our old monochrome GB copy of Tetris, as the GBA slot only supported GBA carts.

So I wasn't the only one who has the automatical reaction of playing GB Tetris on any new GB hardware? =) That certainly was the first game I played with my original GB, the GBA and GB Player.

Due to my personal distinct lack of any and all GBA versions of Tetris, I had to settle for Rampage Puzzle Attack, which indeed had unprecedented picture clarity on th
