Puzzle Pirates Puzzles Previewed 23

Puzzle Pirates (the boxed version) launches next week across the country, and in preparation Warcry has a rundown on the different games you'll find on the high seas. From the article: "Swordfighting: Swordfighting is the noble art of Pirate combat. Clear blades of the same type to strike blows upon your enemy. Swordfights can range from individual challenges to the great battles between Pirate crews that occur at sea during boarding. " When the cap'n says to team up on a scurvy dog, ye best hop to it!

  • I played YPP last fall, and every one of these games except spades was in it at the time. There aren't any pictures, so I can't tell if the games have changed or not, but I suspect this is news merely because the commercial release is coming out, not because anything new has been added.
    • So after actually reading the descriptions of the games, I realize that they are, in fact, the same as they were some time ago. Guess I still haven't learned to RTFA.
    • They've also added Shipwrightery, Alchemistry, and hearts since you've played. Additionally, there are new oceans, and a new payment plan where you can essentially play for free (The Dubloon system) as long as you don't want any cool stuff and just want to play the puzzles. So Dubloon ocean: Puzzles = Free, MMOG aspects = monies.

So, how much money is /. getting for advertising Puzzle Pirates? This isn't a review, and "Zonk" seems to have posted it on his own initiative. Maybe Timothy can investigate it for his next installment of "Your Rights Online".

This link offered no more information that one can get by clicking on the documentation [puzzlepirates.com] for the puzzles [puzzlepirates.com]. In fact, the documents have more information, and have pictures.

This is a press release! The descriptions are short and vague, and there aren't even pictures. And the game itself has been out online for months, even if it's just now going to show up in stores.
    • ... I had as much as I wanted of the game during the free, open, ~6 month long beta of it 1.5 years ago. It was not-bad, passive fun, but it's not something I'd play a monthly fee for.

Only one item on that list -- the distilling game -- is newer than what was in the beta.
      • and Spades... and more not mentioned in the article.
      • That list is incomplete. There's been a few other additions. There's currently an Alchemy puzzle, a Ship Building puzzle, and I think they just added Hearts to go along with spades.
  • If they go with this title, the MIAA and RIAA and Microsoft will be hitting them with serious lawsuits. Damn Pirates!!!! ARRRRR :)

I tried the free trial of the online game last year and loved it. PP is a starge concept for a MMRPG but in practice it works really well. I ended up ditching it when my free trial ran out since it really just sucked away my time, but having a standalone boxed version for casual play is a great idea. An added bonus is that the online game is refreshingly free of 133+ powergamers.
    They deserve their success.
  • I finally got off of it when I realized I hate playing puzzle games. Before that, though, I was hard core playing. It sucks the life out of you. In a cute way.
    • I don't hate puzzle games, it's just that they generally have a weird life time to me. I get terribly addicted to one for a while, and play it all the time, hardcore intense. Then one day, it's all of a sudden just entirely boring to me. I've been playing PP for a little over a year, and it's about to the point where I'm bored with all of them. Shipwriting is finally getting tired to me, but I sure loved it when it first came out.

Of course, there's a huge economic and social/political aspect to the game as

Actually, that list is incomplete, they forgot the following puzzles:
    Hearts
A card game for four players, similar to the game that comes with Windows. You get points for every hearts card and for the queen of spades. Try to get as few points as possible.
    Alchemy
Arrange pipes to rout mixtures of different colors to the correct bottles.
    navigating
Arrange falling stars into constelations by rotating three different rings. Kind of hard to explain.

  • This is a game that anybody can get into. It combines massively multiplayer RPGs with games like Super Puzzle Fighter, where the game action is represented as a puzzle. Fighting is Super Puzzle Fighter-like, while other duties in the game involve playing a different puzzle. You should give the free trial a go. It is allot of fun.
