I use to like IGN way back in the day. Everytime you go on the site now you are bombarded with annoying Flash pop up ads that won't go away until you click them on. Also, I hate that when you click on a link you get intermission ad before the story you want to read. Yes, I understand that the Internet is a horrible, unprofitable medium and that companies need to do everything they can to make money and not go out of business. But, in the interest of profits they turned their site into a craptacular piece of shit. Oh and on more than one occassion I feel that their video game reviews were given high ratings by the video game companies that they reviewed. I am not interested in this new channel or content programming at all. It's going to be another lame G4TV channel.
    • I'm not sure if they even offer this package anymore, but I pay $20 a year for IGN Insider (just renewed last month). You don't get the popups or most of the annoying flash interstitial ads. I am not saying that IGN is the greatest site, but they do have a wide variety of "extras" for the Insiders, and I think that $20 a year is worth it.
      • They do have this for something around the price you listed. They also have a more expensive membership that gets you access to fileplanet and all of the other gamespy services.

Frankly I switched to gamespot complete last year. Its $29 a year, and you get absolutely no ads (not even within the site), which is quite nice really, especially since their ads regularly take up half the main page. Also, their video streaming system is nice and way more organized than IGN's, and it's easy to download 'em too. Al

  • Now that's a thought. It would probably be much better than the crap known as G4. Hell, almost anything would be better than that channel.

The gaming industry has a higher gross than the movie industry in the USA (I don't know about other countries). Madden NFL football game series has taken in over one Billion dollars ($1,000,000,000)!
Spiderman 2 took in 114 million over it's opening weekend, while Halo 2 made more than 125 million in one day!!!

In Australia, video games have now surpassed CD sales. This may be partly due to increased electronic music sales though.

With that much money involved, I'm surprised that it took the media types this long to realize that a TV channel aimed at the gaming audience is worth their while. Hey, I'm happy- I've been gaming for more than 25 years.

You're comparing a game to box office sales only. There is billions more in DVD/VHS sales. As much as I would like it, the video game industry is not outselling the movie industry.

Plus, when you go making wild allegations like you have, it's good to have a link to someone who agrees with you. That way you don't look so crazy pulling 'facts' out of thin air.
      • I seem to recall the statistics that compare the gross of the Video Game industry to the other media biz also included sales of hardware.

In other words, not just the sale of the content, but of the consoles etc.

Can you imagine if the Movie industry included in their revenue the sale of DVD players, TV's, Tivo's etc... the comparison isn't perfectly accurate but there you have it.

        • That's true. The figure is especially meaningless when you notice that gross dollar ammounts of dvd sales are higher than box office grosses and that doesn't count pay-per-view, television, airline, or international sales. Even at $50 a game, videogames have a long way to go before they compare to film sales.
(Although to be honest, the movie industry (except sony) doesn't get money from equipment sales do they? except a licencing fee or something. But on the flip side, there is the fact that microsoft an
    • The gaming industry has a higher gross than the movie industry in the USA...

Only if you distort then numbers in some strange ways. Ron Gilbert disects the claim quite well. [grumpygamer.com] In short: The US video game industry is estimated at $10B. That includes console systems, the movie industry sales wouldn't include DVD players. DVD sales and rentals were about $16B, already topping the game industry. In both cases we're talking about rentals and sales of products (and the game industry gets a boost from sales

  • Another G4? I mean, seriously, how can a TV station from IGN be any different...
  • I thought they were collaberating with G4 for their E3 coverage. That would make a lot of sense for this move, no?
  • If the 18-34 male gamer demo is so well established why doesn't a TV channel exist that captures this demo better than MTV?

It seems the answer is pretty simple...

Those people spend their time online... (that's right you guessed it) playing games. When they're watching TV they don't generally care to watch non-interactive media discussing their interactive media. The medium is, while not exactly flawed, inadequate to transmit the content that this demo finds appealing.

    Thus... they're most likely watching
  • I used to be a big fan of IGN. That was about three years ago. Since they started that Insider thing (that I subscribed to for two years,) which didn't always get rid of the ads, plus the abundance of ads themselves, and now a cluttered design (IMO), I tend to go to them last for gaming news now.

However, regardless of how much IGN may suck, G4 sucks even more. I would gladly like to see IGN make their own TV channel, if only to make Comcast take one in the balls and see G4 go into ruins. Even if the IGN ch

  • I'd imagine it'd have the same format as the home shopping network. It'd be funny to watch them pawn off gold, and clothing. If they were smart, they'd show a character they're selling dominating in the game.
