The Revolution is Coming Mid-2006? 69

GameIndustry.biz is reporting that the Nintendo Revolution is slated to arrive in Mid-2006. The information comes from a key supplier. From the article: "This is the first solid evidence that the Revolution platform is still on track for a mid-2006 launch. The console is expected to debut at a pre-E3 conference next Tuesday, but it's still not known just how much will be on display - with sources close to Nintendo suggesting that only a pre-recorded video of "next-gen footage" may be shown."

I am the biggest nintendo fanboy that there is, but they consitantly pull this kind of shit. Before it was ultra 64 it was called Project Reality and it promised graphics similar to what gamecube has now. It then became Ultra 64 and was delayed and only footage was shown(example being Final Fantasy 64) and then eventually they released Nintendo 64. I really hope the big N doesnt do this again. Whenever I hear that stuff wont be playable I cant help but smell delay.
    • What are you talking about? "Constantly" here means, basically, "The N64." Revolution hasn't even been pushed back, this is our first hint as to its release date.

You may be smelling delay, but wait until the delay actually comes before complaining. Then I'll probably chime in, heh.

No they didn't. I don't know what your expectations were, but they were awfully high even with Nintendo's hype.

      The GameCube launched on time.

It's too early, man. If it's going to launch in 06 (which has NOT been announced), then being playable this E3 isn't the dec
      • The arcade version of Killer Instinct (and to a lesser extent Crusing USA) was not possible to do on the N64 but the arcade game itself actually stated that it would. Maybe you could argue it wasn't Gamecube-level graphics but its inarguable that it was more than the N64 was capable of accomplishing.

I was to understand that the revolution wouldn't be televised, so how the heck can you see the game you're playing???
  • Granted that I didn't read the article but it seems like slashdot and the Internet in general is full of these rumors. If I see an announcement about the release or specs for the PS3 today, I'm leaving.

    1) the day Nintendo matches the schedule of their hardware supplier for a release date will be a cold day in hell. Not to say that this isn't necessarily true, but this estimate has to be based on the timeframe Nintendo has issued for the RAM. Who's to say that such a date isn't only for Japan, or only for the USA, or perhaps an extra-early due date for MoSys to make sure they get their goods ready in time for the REAL Revolution release date? not the best timeframe to rely on.

    2) recent reports have pointed at an "earlier" release date for the PS3 as well; is this to say that XBox 360 is actually forcing the hands of Sony and Nintendo? years ago, nobody would've ever predicted that, but perhaps people are finally beginning to fear MS's momentum in the console industry. now THAT is the point of this article. very interesting and exciting to see MS keeping everyone on their toes.

You know, it is very interesting. I remember reading interviews with Iwata, stating that Nintendo intended to release their next console before the end of 2005, with the intent of beating the other console makers out of the gate. Now, we see Microsoft about to release their console just in time for the post-Turkey shopping craze, and Sony and Nintendo in the background spinning their gears like crazy?

Bottom line, I think that the Japanese video game contenders got the wind knocked out of them by focusing
      • I only remember Iwata saying that they would launch with the PS3 or beat it to market. Every story I've read suggests Nintendo thinks Microsoft is rushing their next console to market too early.

          early.

If the next Xbox isn't backwards compatible, it may be dead in the water shortly after PS3 and the Revolution launch. I bought a PS2 mainly for the ability to play all those FF games that came out on for the PS1. I'll be getting a Revolution mainly to play all those Gamecube games that I haven't played yet. I'd thin
    • I would have thought that microsofts competitors would wait and see the specs of the xbox 360 and immediately announce better specs to try to put people off buying an expensive and possibly obsolete console.
      • Sony will probably announce larger specs on their pre-E3 thing. Nintendo won't try a specwar, that would be inconsistent with all of their "specs don't matter" talk.

Nintendo probably is just recognizing the reality of the situation; that is, because of their smaller market share outside of Japan, their impact in the media covering E3 will be much smaller than either the PS3 or XBox360. What they're possibly trying to do by showing "in game" footage is to stop rumors on poor graphical performance (and possibly demonstrate a more "friendly" potential launch line-up).

Let's face it, being that Half-Life 2 was beautiful on pretty average hardware (that is on medium setting

Anyone who thinks big N or even Sony for that matter would release a major system before the holiday shopping season is a fool. It'll be 4Q 2006 at earliest.
    • I'd consider PSP a major system from Sony, yet it didn't come out Q4
    • Well, if they can launch it early, they will launch it early. It's simply stupid for them to wait around before releasing the console if it's truly ready. They can test out their supply chains, and if a console is released in September, shortages in October won't be as bad as shortages in November and December. Nintendo also has a history (SNES, N64) of releasing systems not right before Christmas. That's the smart play anyway. Release something in the summer, by the holiday you will have at least a few goo
  • From TFA:

According to the site, the console will boast four 2.5Ghz IBM G5 Custom cores, with 128KB of level 1 cache and a 512KB shared level 2 cache, while the graphics will be powered by a dual core ATI RN520 chipset, with 16MB of on-board eDRAM for the frame buffer.

10 GHZ? IIRC, that beats out XBOX 360.

    • Jeez... I guess you'll need some gloves for it then. The "Revolution" is a handheld system.

Dev kits are already out there. Last I'd heard, "Revolution" was going to be released either just before Christmas, or in mid-spring.

Nintendo's next home system won't be out for quite a while, probably not until early 2007. I hope UT2k7 is a launch title for it... what with the PPU and all... I've probably said too much...
    • Four 2,5GHz cores doesn't make it 10GHz ;)

      128KB of level 1 cache and a 512KB shared level 2 cache
Seems underpowered to me, but then, it's a console not a computer.
    • Those specs were a blatant lie and the one who made them up admitted they were false five minutes later. Idiots spread them nonetheless.
