Halloween In Massive Space 45

Halloween is a great nerd holiday, and it extends into Massively Multiplayer Game space. Everquest Live is offering up a series of events from the Kithicor Forest to the Hafling village of Rivervale. EQ2 has trick or treating in the two major cities, as well as smaller quests elsewhere. World of Warcraft players can also trick or treat with Innkeepers to honor the holiday of Hallow's End. Fashion seems to be the primary motivator in Anarchy Online's holiday event, which allows you the chance to snag Halloween themed t-shirts. Guild Wars has the winners from a Halloween art contest, as well as some theming in-game. Finally, Final Fantasy XI's always terrific seasonal events continue with The Harvest Festival. FFXI and World of Warcraft specifically allows you the opportunity to dress your character as various monsters and characters. My priest made a great pirate. Arr!

    I'd like to see what you all are doing in REAL life for Halloween.

    Not just Geeky Gadgets [slashdot.org] for parties, but what cool stuff are you geeks making for youselves? High-tech, low-tech it doesn't matter.

    I usually submit an article asking this question every Halloween, but the editors always reject the submission.
    • I'm not doing anything. I'm an adult. Left the halloween crap back in fifth grade where it belongs. Monday is a good day to sleep in and get some rest from the long work week (which ends on Sunday for me). Some time where I can shut the pager off, ignore the phone and not read any lines of code or compile anything or attend any meetings. I'll take that over just about anything else (except Thanksgiving, because turkey and mashed potatoes fucking RULE).

Here in the UK Halloween is basically a non-event, and I gather it's much like that in most other parts of the world. Oh sure the shops here sell themed crap, gives them something in between "Back to School" and "OMG only 2 months til Xmas LOL!", but it's mostly for little kids and even then there's not the trick or treat mentality that exists o
      • In America, Halloween is a chance for grown women to dress like sluts (they always pick the same few costumes which are princess, dominatrix, vampiress, dorothy, school girl) and show off without feeling trampy and for guys to ogle them and, preferably, engage in semi-anonymous sex that you can probably not be incrimenated for by your significant other.         Quite right. Halloween's a big holiday here-- in most places it's just kids dressing up in costume, going trick-or-treating door to door and getting candy.

        But in the fun cities like San Francisco, New Orleans (sigh), the Florida Keys (double sigh) Halloween is a major event. In San Francisco, many people call it the City's "Unofficial Holiday", the Castro District has a party with 100,000 attendees.

    • I should dig my free account out of the dust and check it out. I've got mixed feelings about WoW's haloween event. It's got some really cool seasonal quests, like stinkbombing Southshore and egging an inn, but alot of it seems just thrown in. In particular, my troll male can't wear any of the cheap costume masks, because instead of being on his face, they seem to be impaled through his skull.

    Alterations also occuring in DAoC, such as graphical changes to horses, players (in cities when a treat is purchased and eaten) and some backrounds (such as the moon).

  • Nice to see how calendar events play into these games, and I wonder if news events ever will. Seeding stories based on todays news... maybe a modern day IRL game will use real news as feed for dialogue and quests...

    Could be funny, this is prior art, so no patents on "using up sources to seed live gameplay and dialogue" or anything daft.

    One thing, what is "Hallow's End", is this WoW only thing? Or is All Hallow's Eve known by this as well? I say because a google of Hallow's End brought up WoW pages.

    • I figure it is a way to celebrate a "real life" event within the context of the game. They changed the name because "Halloween" and "All Hallow's Eve" shouldn't exist in the Warcraft Universe. So by calling it "Hallow's End" they circumvent adding out of context material, but at the same time accomplish exactly that. Ciao
    • Hallow's End is one of those things that's simmilar enough to real life that you say, "Hey, it's Halloween!" but different enough that it can be fit into the game's world. For specifics: Hallow's End was originally celebrated in the Eastern Kingdoms to commemorate the people killed in the Second War. It's taken up popularity in Orgrimar and Darnassas more recently. I didn't see mention of it in the article, but that's not all going on in WoW. The Undercity is currently celebrating something called the Wi
    • Actually, at least one game, Black and White, makes snuggles with the internet to get the local weather and give more of the same to your little virtual heathens. I remember seeing this in at least one other game too, but I can't remmber which right now. I guess it's a start. :-)

    Also, MapleStory [mapleglobal.com] has a halloween quest going, where you kill zombies and ghosts to get candies, which you give to an NPC for a little pumpkin basket, which you can hold like a shield.

    So how exactly do horde people in WoW dress-up for Halloween? As dwarves?
  • Updates over the last two days have decorated Drokanr's Forge and Lion's Arch with Hallowe'en related things, there's a new collector that gives out Hallowe'en related items, and apparently something big will happen on the day, which sounds like it'll involve a big enemy. Not bad considering there's no subscription fee.
  • Nexus (nexustk.com) has this, that I've noticed so far:

    Every half hour, you can say "Trick or treat" in the inn and receive a trick (such as forcing you to cast mass-vertigo, which makes the movement controls random for every player in the vicinity, including yourself) or a treat (such as a costume -- anything from a rabbit or fox to the Totem God/Dragon Chung-Ryong -- or a valuble item such as a Watermelon).
