Classic Games (Games) Wii

ScummVM Ported to Nintendo Gamecube/Wii 28

Croakyvoice writes "Rodolfo Portillo has released a port of ScummVM for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Gamecube. ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games like Simon the Sorcerer, Broken Sword and Flight of the Amazon Queen. You will have to use SD Load to run this on your console." No offense to Broken Sword, but it's all about Day of the Tentacle for me. Update: 04/10 16:45 GMT by Z : Technically, this is a GameCube port. The Wii's backwards compatibility allows it to work there anyway, but it's worth clarifying.

Since it's GCN homebrew, you can't use the Wii hardware, which means no pointer support (which would be the only reason I would want it). Calling it Wii homebrew when it runs in Gamecube mode is just wrong

I'm not familiar with scumm, this emulator can allow you to play Day of the Tentacle on the Wii? I cannot RTFA at work. I'll make sure to check this out when I get home and try it right away. This also reminds me that I hope the Wii VM will get "Maniac Mansion" ported sooner than later! That's worth the nostalgia value alone.

    Cheers,
    Fozzy

    • If you go to scummvm's website <URL:http://scummvm.org.nyud.net:8080> (coral cache'd to pass your filter), you'll see that it does both Day of the Tentacle and Maniac Mansion work in scummvm. And, once again, this is GCN homebrew, which happens to work on the Wii

I'd hope you could play Maniac Mansion with SummVM, considering "SCUMM" means "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion".

People already replied that MM is supported by Scumm, but you don't even need that if you can play DOTT. There is an arcade machine inside DOTT that you click on and play Maniac Mansion as a game-within-a-game.
DOTT is the best of course!

... except that, last time I checked, that (going to the arcade machine to play MM) doesn't work under ScummVM. However, the original datafiles of MM are included with the datafiles of DOTT, so you just add the directory where it is in ("MANIAC", IIRC) on ScummVM and play it as a separate game. Still, playing MM inside DOTT isn't possible with ScummVM.

The Computer inside DOTT that launches MM just launches a MM .exe, its doesn't run in the DOTT engine, so it doesn't help with emulation, unless of course one is running Dosbox.

Actually, I think it's the computer in Weird Ed Edison's room, but yeah, you're right. Except when I tried it I had the game hang and crash...I think it's a little outside the emulator's capability. However, it's freely available on abandonware sites by itself.

They keep saying 'Wii homebrew' but it's not. It's GameCube homebrew, which the Wii will play because it's backwards compatible. It's kind of like taping a VCR to a DVD player and claiming your DVD player plays VHS tapes. From all I can see, you won't get a bit extra from the Wii's added power and it will be identical to just using a GameCube.

You're playing Day of the Tentacle on ScummVM, what do you care about the Wii's added power? Why not go play Asteroids on the PS3 and complain it doesn't use all fifty-seven CPUs?

Now, the fact that it won't use the Wiimote as a pointer, that's disappointing. Wii would be perfect for the old LucasArts adventures just because of that.

  • If the makers of Myst aren't thinking about a Wii port, they're nuts.

However, the "realtime FPS" style Myst shouldn't be what they're thinking about. I don't think, anyway.
    • If Cyan had the money, you can bet that they would want to port Uru [urulive.com] (flash warning) to the Wii. The control scheme of the Wii is ideal for their games, and the Plasma engine would not be hindered by the speed of the Wii's processors. However, it has been a long time since Cyan's games were meant to be played at 640x480.

Come to think about it, I might go buy a wiimote just to use with my pc for Uru. Yay for bluetooth!
  • This is Gamecube homebrew, not Wii homebrew. The Wii is simply backwards-compatible.
  • Hi, I'm selling these fine leather Wiimote covers.

And why was Monkey Island not mentioned in the main post? For shame!
    • Indeed! I would think that Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, and Sam and Max Hit the Road would be all that people need to jump at this!

Sam and Max would be a big magnet for this now that the duo is back in the forefront of gaming thanks to TellTale Games [telltalegames.com]. Those who were not around to experience the original game that started it all can go back and play what we've been talking about for over a decade!

How about you bring ScummVM to the Virtual Console line-up? I know its not really a console, but there's no denying that there's a *ton* of popular games just waiting to be revisited, and you've got the perfect input device to do so.
    • I'll second and raise you. How about bringing it to the VC (with wiimote support of course) along with working copies of the couple of ScummVM games that are both freely and legally available from the publishers. I can always dream...
  • Now if I could just finish Twilight Princess, damn that game is long...
