Sony Announces New Exclusive Rockstar Title 97

The official PlayStation blog has the word that Rockstar is gifting Sony with a brand-new franchise. Gift is probably the wrong word; I'm sure it cost a pretty penny to obtain those exclusivity rights. Just the same, as Gamespot notes, this is a good sign for a company that's lost a number of fish to Microsoft over the last year: "Recently, more and more titles which were previously thought to be exclusive to one console or another have been announced as multiplatform, including Assassin's Creed, Fatal Inertia, and Devil May Cry 4. Some media speculation stated that former Sony chief Ken Kutaragi's 'slowness' in tying up the red tape of the deals had led to Sony losing exclusives for the PS3." No word on what the game is, other than it is not L.A. Noire.

Soooo, sometime in the future, an unnamed and unknown franchise will be released exclusively on the PS3, eventually. Thanks for the update. One last question, will it be a franchise like Table Tennis, or something larger. Why is this news again?
    • I find it hilarious and slightly sad that a positive news item for the PS3, only results in people making fun of / bashing Sony / Rockstar, when a negative article posted a few hours later about the 360, results in serious discussion in the replies on the article.

Why can't we all just get along? :)

Jack Thompson's Baby Slicing, Dicing, Cooking, and Chomping Challenge would probably play better on the Wii; you could hold the remote/nunchuck together like jaws and actually "chomp" on the babies in-game.

Crap, I'll probably get sued for taking part in this thread. I hope Canada doesn't extradite people for stupidity...
      • Only if you're dumb enough to give away your citizenship, so you're probably safe... for now.

Sony said previously they weren't interested in paying for exclusives... More lies, or did Rockstar find some other reason to do this?
    • Not really sure that is considered a lie. Change in position more than anything...
      • by Aladrin ( 926209 )
You and Sony can call it 'change of position', but Sony's version of that is 'No we are not planning to have a price cut' and then announcing it 3 days later, after word leaks to the net of sale papers that already have the price in them, with pictures to prove it. Those papers aren't produced overnight.
        • I was commenting on the OP's comment "Sony said previously they weren't interested in paying for exclusives...". If you'd like to find someone to argue with about the definition of lying in regards to Sony's price cut, you'll have to look elsewhere. Sorry, we're all out of crazy.
          • by Aladrin ( 926209 )
Sony's recent statements proves what their attitude towards lying is. There's no need to argue it.

Having lied in the last week, I see no problem thinking they will continue to lie in the forseeable future whenever it suits their fancy.
        • Reminds me of Nintendo denying a redesigned DS the day before they showed the DS Lite. Companies do this all the time, you don't normally annouce new models/prices in advance, because then no one buys them in the current form or current price.
  • Sony doesn't pay for exclusives.. or do they?
    • They payed for GTA to be released on the PS2 first and exclusive (for a while). Other than that I don't know.
  • I was hiding in an air duct above the meeting room where the deal was made.

It only has a working title that I barely made out.

It was "Bloody something Murdering Rapist something something Detonate something Slaughter Kill Kill Kill something If I Could Walk That Way something Linoleum something."

Most of the discussion of the game play seemed to involve the phrase "crushing the heads of small handicapped children".

    I was very very afraid.

Sony Execs: "See - the PS3 does have exclusives! I mean, those Rockstar guys promised us a new game sometime in the future. We just don't know what it's called yet. Or what it's about. Or when it will be finished. But we'll be damned if it's not exclusive!"

Sony's new tagline: "We'll have cool games eventually, we promise!"
    • Sony has exclusives, already, and they rock, and there are plenty coming out by Christmas too. Try reading the news or something.

Ratchet will rock, Lair is going to be incredible, Warhawk is promising, I'm still playing Resistance online regularly, Motorstorm is pretty good ... ... oh I'm sorry, I didn't Sony-bash. Cause the PS3 supports non-Sony peripherals and standards like USB and Bluetooth without lock-outs. Neat huh?

    My Little Pony: Revenge

Be enthralled as your pony gains hair power to rip the sculls out of unsuspecting pedestrians

Be overwhelmed as your pony gains frolic points to unleash a deadly stream of missiles on all who stand in his way

Be ready for the coming of the cute little ponies who are going to Kick Your Ass!

Maybe Mulder should have been looking in his PS3, not "out there".
    • No, if Sony pushed out a Rockstar game called My Little Pony: Revenge, they would be sued by EFF on behalf of Slashdot.

After all, everyone knows that computer online representation of OMG Ponies! and derivative works belongs to them.

However, in a swift move to avoid the basic copyright and patent issues, I'm sure RockStar will release "Pony Vampires: Cute and Cuddly!" and we will all buy the PS3.

Comes down to this, Rockstar has been working with sony since the PS1, all the GTAs, the vast majority of their side projects are all on sony platforms. GTA4 however, Rockstar got it ready to soon, there simply isnt enough units on either platform to maintain the sales they want for it so its going multi-platform, something Rockstar had told sony. However, like many of the companies who've been working with Sony all this time, when it came time for a new project, they continued on with sony. The new game

Im guessing becuase devlopers actually pay attention to whats going rather than listening to the random spewing from forums. PS3s selling ahead of the PS1 PS2 and 360 curve, their machine is stable, and thanks to bluray is going to be a great asset to the MP and Sandbox games of the future (something which Rockstar in invested in).
        • by Winckle ( 870180 )
Can't they pay attention to which console has a higher installed base? The 360 has sold many more units, and therefore more people can buy the game.

          For the record, I don't have either, I have a wii :)
      • Rockstar doesn't care about being popular, they like doing things for the express reason of it being unheard of, crazy, shocking and otherwise from left field. Manhunt 2 on the Wii, for example, wouldn't be something you'd expect on a console often assumed to be family friendly. Table Tennis isn't what you'd expect a developer with Rockstar's history to develop as their first offering this generation.

They're the Monty Python of video games, constantly shocking and surprising.
    • Except for the fact that Rockstar was originally a PC focused developer and they've been developing games for consoles besides the PS1 and PS2 on and off for years. The Dreamcast got GTA2, the Xbox got GTA3 and VC, the PC got all of the mainstream GTAs, the 360 got Table Tennis and soon GTA4. Rockstar may "seem" loyal to Sony, but thats only because of how the video game market played out last generation. This generation, Rockstar is a wild card. The Wii (might) get Manhunt 2, GTA4 for the 360 is guaranteed

Rockstar was never a "PC focused developer". DMA Design created the first-ever GTA game for the PC first, but that was before Rockstar had anything to do with them. As soon as Rockstar took over, consoles came first.
        • First off, GTA2, GTA:London 1961 and Max Payne 1 and 2 all came out for PC before their console ports. Second, GTA2 came out for the Dreamcast 6 months after the PS1 version, not the 1+ year(s) you claim. Third, State of Emergency was a Xbox exclusive and Smuggler's Run Warzones was a Gamecube exclusive.

Quit putting shit out of your ass like a PS3 fanboy. You're embarrassing Rockstar.

I was impressed with GTA:San Andreas' world. You could drive (or fly) for a long time without running out of world. It boggles my mind what they're going to be able to do with Blu-Ray capacity at their disposal.

This current generation is just awful. All the three big companies have been doing is either bragging about their exclusives or promising new and better features down the road.

I want to see the results of this. I'm tired of waiting for all these promises. I'm tired of being disappointed. I want it to be delivered not stated and put off till god knows when.

Sony stated it the best a while ago. Your investing in potential. As much as I hate them, they admitted to it. For the first time a console company in the industry admitted that your buying potential in a console.

All its been is this. Microsoft and Sony are bickering over who has more or better exclusive titles. And Nintendo keeps promising us online game play and their real flagship titles this fall.

I own a 360, I only play Guitar Hero 2, its the only game that screams "come back and play me". I also own a Wii, a complete disappointment, once I finished Zelda there was nothing left. Nintendo leaving out online multiplayer right off the back showed me that they are still behind. There was no excuse for that not to be there at launch. As for the PS3, I cant justify the steep price right now, blu-ray or not I want a gaming console not a blu-ray player.

I will say this though. For the first time in a while I was floored by a single game this generation. This has only happened a few times, Doom, Mario 64, Half-Life, Starcraft, and now Gears of War. As for Guitar Hero 2, the only game that has made me go back and play it again like this is Starcraft.
    • For the first time in a while I was floored by a single game this generation

So Guitar Hero 2 is the game that floored you? I wasn't sure by what I read in your comment.
    • Although there's nothing about it that really needs a new system (other than the screen resolution), and the fact that it's essentially a remake of an old Amiga game, I can play Super Stardust for hours.
  • Just remember, we don't know what this franchise is yet. Rockstar could deliver another smash hit like GTA...but there's also a chance we'll get another game that will sell like Manhunt or Table Tennis, both of which hit the clearance racks here.
  • Hey, maybe Rockstar will go back to its DMA Design roots [wikipedia.org] and bring back Lemmings or Uniracers [wikipedia.org].

Although actually, now that I think about it, I hope that those wouldn't be Sony exclusives, as both of those games would be awesome with a Wii control scheme. A Wii Remote would be great for controlling the Lemmings cursor, or twisting around to perform Uniracer stunts.
  • Sony passed on exclusive rights to GTA4 in order to strike a deal with a new exclusive IP. No "dirty money" was exchanged; R* genuinely enjoys doing business with Sony.
  • I bet it's Rockstar presents Table Tennis... 2!
  • But I really want a game where I can also rape women and kill fetuses. Blowing away innocent pedestrians with an Uzi just ain't cuttin' it no more.
  • New R* franchises usually aren't too successfull. Which is a pity, because some of them are pretty cool games. Table Tennis, Manhunt and Bully got good reviews, yet they didn't sell too well. As an owner of a PS3, I'm glad to see a new R* game come my way, but I doubt it'll do too much good for the PS3 itself. Hopefully Sony didn't pay that much for it.
    • Hmm?

Manhunt got terrible reviews.. the only reason it sold at all was all the "BLOODIEST GAME EVAR!!1" talk that was flying about.

Table Tennis was really fun though, and I can't comment on Bully as I have never played it.
      • by LKM ( 227954 )
All Manhunt versions averaged reviews around 76%, with the highest reviews above 90%.
  • Rockstar makes anything good besides GTA? Let's see, there was "Red Dead Revolver" (no), that ping pong game (no), Bully (meh).. Manhunt was decent (hmm). Do they mean a "Rockstar" developed game, or distributed? While "Midnight Club" is pretty popular, I doubt people would be excited about an exclusive racing game. Besides PS3 already has Grand Torismo. Rockstar would have to pull something totally original, away from the sim slasher realm, to make this of any importance.
  • Rockstar: Games with Violence and Sex, even with Lies that it is not in the game.

Sony: Screwing the consumer with some latent, even blatant incompatabilities (usually discovered too late)
and outright fucking up machines with their trojan and even lying about it.
