Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo Now Out 97

Eurogamer notes that the beta demo for Unreal Tournament 3 is now available over at Fileplanet. "Currently the open beta demo is only available to Windows users, and will give you all a chance to test out a couple of maps and then leave your feedback for Epic Games so it can make a more polished end product - like a shoe."

    Yeap.. it's been out for several days now.. it's the hyper-paced action.. but it plays well on my lowly 6600GT..
    If you run XP64 or Win2k3 64, there is a 64-bit patch you -might- need. You can find it on Epic's site at http://www.epicgames.com/download/UT3Demo-XP64-2K3.zip [epicgames.com]

      For Windows x64 you'll probably also need this workaround [epicgames.com] to even be able to install the game.

      I did.

      Not that you'd get that kind of support from other games companies. It's a beta demo, and they go out of their way to fix and work-around issues. It's beta, so you expect bugs. Just wow.

        I don't really understand what a "beta demo" is even supposed to be. Beta = testing version to find bugs, demo = trial version to evaluate the program. What is the demo demonstrating if it's a buggy beta? Is that like saying "if this demo isn't as good as you expect that's because it's beta"?
        • Presumably it is a more limited form of open beta. Open betas usually give you the full game to test.
          • Yeah, it's only got like two maps and doesn't even have all of the multiplayer modes. The maps included aren't that great and the Enforcer looks really weak now. Not that you'd use that much, but it's still lame.

              3 maps - Heat Ray, Shangrila, and Suspense - but I agree with you completely; the UT2k4 demo had Linux support the very second it came out (the Linux demo of this is delayed for days at best) and came with an Onslaught map out of the box.
              • I only tried out the duel and VCTF modes. Is the third one a bigger, DM-only map? I don't have a windows box so I just played a few minutes of it at a friend's house.

                  Heat Ray is a medium-biggish DM map, Shangrila is a medium DM map, and Suspense is a small VCTF map.
        • Better than Sony and EA. They both release games that should be in beta, and they charge you for it.
      • I hate to pester a guy offering you a favor (for free, no less) but I was wondering you were still willing to give out those extra Half Life 2 codes. Did you end up getting the Orange Box?

      It's smooth as glass on my 8800. I didn't really like the feel of it at first, but it's a lot tighter if you turn off mouse smoothing. The graphics are busier and more dystopian than UT2004, so you'll sometimes need a sharp eye to pick out a target. Hoverboards are genius, as is being able to grapple a Manta and get a tow. Everyone's salivating over the descriptions of the Necris vehicles, and the Darkwalker in the Heatray DM map certainly delivers. It's a thing of fright and beauty to watch that tripod clu
    • It runs well on a 6600GT? I replaced my 6600GT with an (overclocked) 7600GS and I get an average of 25 FPS at 800x500 (any higher and it becomes unplayable.) What type of performance are you getting exactly?
    • Sorry, having a lot of trouble finding any info on this. Does the game run in Vista 64 with 64 bit support? I have XP x64 as well, but was wondering if there is DX10 code in it. I mean, if I can get it to run with 64 bit code and it has DX10 code, this game should be sweet.

    Except Windows XP 64-bit edition. If you even manage to get the game installed, you'll have to use an epic developed work around trick. *Sigh* What next in a never ending parade of XP 64-bit incompatibility issues? At least this problem has a good chance of being dealt with, unlike certain other incompatibilities (I'm looking at you VS2k5.)
    • No offense dude but complaining about incompatibility in a demo, much less 64 bit incompatibility (which has been a problem with many, many release products) is a little sad, especially when it is possible to get it to work. I had a problem with Supreme Commander's demo when it came out, and so did many ATI users, it's a part of demos and open betas to discover incompatibilities and correct them for the full product, the fact that 64 bit has a workaround at all is great news.

    • You sir, are an idiot. Now STFU. This IS NOT XP x64s fault (which runs the best out of any OS they've made, performance and reliability wise). I installed the demo and guess what? It didn't work. But also guess what? I AM USING XP 32-bit. I replaced the exe and it worked fine. DUMB FUCKS! Don't post if you don't know wtf you're talking about.

    The minimum requirements of UT3 are already impressive, and its great.
    • It is indeed impressive.
      I have had a quick runthrough on this rig with its onboard nvidia 6100 shared memory thing.

      It reminds me of the old amiga Alien Breed/doom days with chunky pixelblocks, but it simply means that the renderer can only do so much.

      I would however prefer the rendering path to use fast polygon based (UT99 quality) graphics rather than trying to render the slower shader pathways.

        That's a low-end gaming machine these days. I just bought a new Motherboard (1066 FSB), a 2.66Ghz dual core 6750 with a 1333 FSB, 2GB of DDR2-800, and a GeForce 8800GTS for $700 off of newegg. With an aftermarket zalman quiet fan. I reu

        Those don't look exactly demanding of a modern PC to me. In fact, my 5 year old PC has all of those covered, albeit barely. Yeah, you wont get 60 fps, but come on, this PC was 900 bucks when I built it. A comparable costing PC now would do plenty fine.

          My Radeon 9550 lets me down, so I don't even meet the minimum.

          But that's my fault, for buying an XBox 360 instead of a new PC.

  • After having spent the last few days playing the Orange Box, I have to admit this was a letdown. From someone who knows nothing about 3D Engine design, UT3 doesn't look like much of an graphical evolution, and apart from some creativity in vehicles the gameplay is pretty iterative. I'll still likely pick this sucker up, but it's relatively low on my list of gaming priorities this holiday season.

    • If you only forward port 7777, you should be fine. (Both TCP and UDP just to make sure.)

    • I haven't hosted my own UT server for a while. If I recall, UDP 7777 is the only incoming port needed.

      If you need to allow outgoing connections, there are a few more that you'll need to allow. If you don't mind opening up every possibility, try these UT2k4 ports recommended by a random Google search: UDP/TCP 7777-7788, 27900, and 42292.

  • ...were finally starting to heal up from the RSI I've been suffering from too much UT2K3/UT2K4.
  • I can't install it, I'm getting an Error -112: Out of space after that Ageia driver setup. The target partition has ~5Gb free. Apparently it's trying something stupid with the OS partition which only has a few hundred MB left.

  • Can someone help explain to me (and some coworkers who were talking about it this morning) what all the graphical settings. Specifically the relation between screen resolution, screen rendering percentage, and how UE3's post processing works into the equation? We are all pretty interested in what the screen rendering actually means.

    Either way, I tried a variety of settings on my pretty old system (9800 pro, 1GB RAM, Athlon 1800+) and I could get a decent framerate but then it looked muddy, or a bad framer

      As far as I can tell, the screen percentage setting works like this: if you set it below 100%, it renders the game at a lower resolution than your screen is set to and then upscales it. Badly.

      That's also what Halo 3 does on the 360, BTW. Only you don't get to choose the resolution.

  • I was shocked that the demo would even run on at all on my Radeon 9800. With a tweaked UTEngine.ini file I was hovering between 25-30 FPS. Of course by "tweaked" I mean stripping out most of the fancy eye candy. The map selection in the demo is a bit of a let-down, but the movement and nearly all the weapons feel great. Since this is a "beta" demo, I am hoping they will release an updated demo in a few weeks to fix some of the big issues and give everyone a look at what the final product should be like.

    I appear to be playing UT2k4 although I never installed that...anyone else have the same problem?
  • ... But was it just me who was kind of disappointed that there's no real gameplay change from ut2004?

    The pretty graphics are very pretty, but somehow I expected the gameplay to change with it, to be more real and cool. Instead I see opponents running and jumping around like cartoon-rabbits, which is very off-putting when the models are these huge, armored guys.

    I love the new game engine, love the pretty, pretty graphics, but the wild-zany gameplay which is cloned exactly from ut2k4 is just a complete disap
