"Eight Days" and "The Getaway" Get Away 14

Gamespot is reporting that both The Getaway and Eight Days have hit the developmental equivalent to purgatory since the studio has suspended work on both games. Claiming the desire to "redistribute resources and budget," Sony is apparently conducting an internal review of all of their development projects in an attempt to stay competitive in the immediate future. "Announced at E3 in 2006, Eight Days was a PlayStation 3 game that combined third-person shooting with driving action. The Getaway, also for the PS3, was to continue on from the PlayStation 2 game, which was released in 2002 and spawned a sequel and a PlayStation Portable spin-off called Gangs of London. Little was known about the modern action-adventure game other than the fact that it was to be set in a photorealistic London."

    Have you seen those Doom graphics? FULLY ANIMATED sprites. 3 dimensional environments. This is truly the pinnacle of computer graphics.
  • Judging by the lack of commentary and the duration that the story has been available on the front page this appears to not really be newsworthy. Maybe we can get some extra (more interesting) stories on the front page seeing as this one is a bust.
  • Little was known about the modern action-adventure game other than the fact that it was to be set in a photorealistic London.

    Sounds like all the programmers stopped working and started playing GTA4 once it came out. It's probably pretty hard to work on a cheap ripoff of a game when a good sequel to the original comes out.

    On the plus side, they could just add brittish accents and take out the map system. That's basically what they did with the original getaway and GTAIII.

      Even harder when the first one on the PS2 was only good for the london representation. As it game it pretty much sucked and I didn't even bother finishing it.

    SO I doubt the 'mericans here are going to care much.

    But regardless, even the first was weak. The mapping was absolutely incredible. Incredible. You could find your way around London perfectly. As a Londoner, this is and was cool to me.

    The cars you could drive were wonderfully done and handled with a real sense of danger. Little touches like indicators when you turned just made it so convincing to play. And of course, it was just /so/ british, and /so/ spot on.

    Unfortunately the game was, overall, lacking a hell of a lot to really bring it to the top and I'm surprised they kept this wanna-be-gta franchise going as long as they did...

      As an American, it proved that I should never, ever drive if I find myself in England. Couldn't seem to get the hang of not driving straight into oncoming traffic no matter how long I tried.
    • The Getaway was just an utterly terrible game. Something's just sooo wrong when the best anyone can say in its favor is that it has a perfectly realistic map of the city. Real-life cities don't, after all, actually make for good settings for chase scenes in movies OR games. A fun TV pastime for me is to watch chase scenes in movies that take place here in San Francisco, and try to figure out what real route must have been followed.

      I'd have no problem with a UK-centric game. But the map notwithstanding,
