Duke Nukem Forever Goes Gold 277

An anonymous reader writes with enthusiasm "Duke Nukem Forever has finally gone gold!" Looks like it'll be on shelves around June 10th with a demo available for Duke Nukem First Access Club members available June 3rd. Can it really be true?

There has to be some correlation between the guy preaching the end of the world this week and Duke Nukem actually coming out. One of the two was just off by a few days. Is hell going to freeze over? The doomsday guy didn't scare me before (I'm a christian, he's a nut) But NOW I''m starting to worry.

Actually, the imminent release of DNF was what set the rapture back. Can't have hell on earth when the demons are snowed in :-P

    • What they've all failed to realize is that they were actually correct: The people who were going to be saved by the rapture were already saved by the rapture. They (and everybody else) are in denial because it wasn't them.

As foretold, this is the first sign that the world will cease to exist in 6 months. The second sign will happen on June 3rd.

I live in a world where Duke Nukem Forever has a release date. I think on the contrary that I have been raptured.

Ahh, yes. "I'm crazy and believe in a voice in the sky, but I'm just not as crazy as him!"

Arguably, craziness is probably an interval variable, but that would mean that you too are crazy, just to a lesser degree than him.

    • Oprah retiring was the 3rd Trumpet of the Apocalypse. Duke Nukem Forever is the 5th. So we still have to wait for Carrot Top to sell out Yankee Stadium. I just don't see that happening before June 10.

    • I just love when people get all riled up about bronze age fantasy!
      Or vaporware.
The release of HURD 1.0 would be epic!

While I agree he's a nut, I would be careful throwing stones. Let me put it this way: As a Christian, you most likely believe some or all of this [wordpress.com]:

...a cosmic Jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.

Unlike some of the other posters, I don't really want to turn this into a religious argument, but might I suggest that you just leave it as "he's a nut", something we can all agree on.

Then it will really be the end of the world.

  • Will it have mapping tools? Or do we get to play the same few maps over and over until nobody buys the DLC and we still play the same stock maps?

Assuming it's not the most elaborate joke ever, I'm waiting for an explosion in the duplication factory, wiping out all of the original copies of the golden image. "Game delayed to early November, promised to be on shelves in time for Christmas."

Then it is true. the end is near.... as was fortold in the old documents....

"And lo, the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse will be announce by a messenger, the actual release of Duke Nukem Forever will seal the fate of mankind as they will bask in the light unaware that the horsemen will approach and deliver their doom unto them." -- Speculese 14:10

  • Answer: "Duke Nukem goes gold."

What is: "Headlines we'll never see?"

This joke was funny up until yesterday. :(

Sorry Duke, Life was a blast back in the day. But, well, you see Duke, while you were in rehab, I got married and settled down. I've got three teenage daughters now and, well.... don't get me wrong - you'll always be a friend Duke - but my wife, see, she won't take kindly if you show up. I afraid I won't be able to play with you anymore. Good luck Duke.

I can see it now... June 3 comes and goes... No word for three days, then on Monday Randy Pitchford of Gearbox makes a short public statement that they've had "a really bad weekend" and will have to regroup... By Wednesday they'll say they miscalculated the release date and it'll be sometime in November. Wired gets one last chance to vote DNF "vaporware of the year"...

Then it's all rendered moot on October 21 when the world ends. DNF fanatics on rooftops are still trying to torrent the leaked beta while the lava moves in.

  • Oh no! They are going to publish a game and kill the Duke Nukem Forever meme. How cruel!
  • Doesn't the term "gone gold" refer back to silver, gold, and platinum records? A gold record is one that has sold 1 million copies. How has DNF done this before it's even been released?

    • by fotbr ( 855184 )

I was under the impression that it related to the way the first "pressed" CDs were mastered -- the master disk was cut (more accurately, etched) and then plated in gold for some reason or other -- perhaps to make them last longer while they were pressing the production run. Don't think it ever had any relation to the sales metric.

If this was a record that would be correct. As this is not a record that is not what it means. In this case it means a gold master was made for the DVD production run.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_master [wikipedia.org]

Had you tried typing into google you would have gotten this information.

    • Not in this context. From TFA:

Duke Nukem Forever, the long awaited sequel to 1996's Duke Nukem 3D, has finally "gone gold', meaning that the game's main development has been completed and is now being replicated onto disks for its release for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms.

    • by Ogive17 ( 691899 )

Definition: When a game is said to have "gone gold," it means that the code has been finalized and is ready to be duplicated for distribution. The term goes back to the days when recordable CDs were manufactured using gold film, leading the source CD to be called the "golden master." Unlike the music industry, it is not a reference to the number of copies sold. It will typically take several weeks for a game to ship to stores and become available to consumers after it has gone gold.

"Gone gold" in this context means that the final game disc has been mastered. Once the master is produced no changes can be made and all that's left to do is mass production. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_master [wikipedia.org]

    • It refers to the "golden" copy...that is, the master copy.

Short answer: No, the term doesn't refer to that. It means the development company has produced the "golden master" copy of the software. That is, the copy that they will send to their manufacturers to be mass-duplicated, producing units for sale.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_master [wikipedia.org]

      • I'm curious why gold would be the chosen medium for the master, as it is softer than most other metals. Wouldn't the malleability be an issue in making thousands of prints?

        • Maybe because the colour of the old cd-r was gold?
          Just guessing.

        • by Kjella ( 173770 )

The actual disc is made of polycarbonate, the only part that's gold is the data layer. The reason to use gold is that it's very non-reactive while the early dyes would easily react to sunlight, scratches causing oxygen to come in contact with the dye and so on. Gold was the expensive, high quality discs you'd use for a master copy. These days it's full of stabilizers and there's no practical difference, but I remember having gold discs and cheap discs.

  • Looks like it'll be on shelves around June 10th... Can it really be true?

No, its not true. The Ars, Amazon and EBGames all list the release date nearly a week later on June 14th.

  • I loved Duke Nukem 3D. It was crap loads of fun and I miss it! I might just have to either get a machine for Windows so I can run Duke Nukem Forever or figure out how to use wine to my advantage.
  • Seriously though, 3D games (of the 2D variety) are so late 1990s. Smart phones mean that sidescrollers are back. Given me Duke and Keen for Android (with a bird ray gun) and I'll be happy.

  • June of ... WHAT YEAR?!

    The End Times have come!

Repent Sinners for your doom has come! It is time to Kick Ass and Chew Bubble Gum. And we're all out of bubble gum...

DN3D is still a fun game that has more edge than most games. Assuming they haven't screwed up the game play and the content hasn't been tamed by the years I think it will find a large following in the younger crowd who were barely out of diapers last go round. I'll play it but I have a family, job, and life outside of video games now. Duke will be like those buddies your G.F./wife hates but you still go do stupid things with every now and then.

  • Is it still coming out on Sega Saturn?
  • We just need to coin a new unit of time called the DNTBR: Duke Nukem Time Between Releases value. It can be used to measure the amount of time to consume a LoC amount of data.
  • At least they will be able to put on the box "Most anticipated game in the history of ever!"

  • So it really is the end of days? Will it be out before the October 21st apocalypse?
  • it looks like they are using steam which means 1) mandatory on line registration if you purchase it. 2) free in 2 months if you don't.

  • That the world ends.

Keep up the good work! But please don't ask me to help.
