UK Town of Ipswich Remodelled As Zelda Level 53

cyclomedia writes "Switch Fringe is a relatively new not-for-profit annual music and arts festival in the UK town of Ipswich, and this year's program features a full page map of the town with details about each venue. Unlike most other maps this one is in the form of a Zelda level. This is in part due to this year's theme 'Re-imagining Ipswich,' that PixelH8 is coming out of semi-retirement to play a gig during the proceedings and possibly due to the fact that the map's designer — The Decibel Kid — spent too much time playing Zelda on a Gameboy Color during the first Web bubble."

They didn't remodel the town, they made a map of the town that looks like a Zelda map.

I was super disappointed when I followed each Link (teehee) and didn't find a town that physically looked like the world of Zelda.

    • Ah, slashdot, clearly you read the headline but not the summary

if the town was truly remodeled, you'd probably have more than a handful of people attempting to cut down the shrubs for rupees.

I blame the Internet. If this were the 15th century, you'd most likely only find the map in a book since most pople wouldn't be able to visit Ipswich anyway. That means fewer opportunities to get super disappointed. Also, most people wouldn't have problems with the map being slightly stylized. And the book itself would be printed in a cool gothic typeface to boot.

    • Well since it's a Zelda map, you should be allowed to run in and smash every jar in sight :-D

    • What's a zelda map? Looks a bit like an ultima map to me.

The map is accurate - there's a streetwalker (well, a womble with a cauldron?) in the red light district near the football stadium - I presume they're still there despite the serial killer prostitute murders a few years ago.

Still, it's been 12 years since I lived near Ipswich, and 15 since I spent a summer living in Ipswich (Norwich Road, top left of map).

There really isn't a lot to do in Ipswich, this map is probably the town's crowning achievement.

Misleading title, stupid concept, and a complete waste of my time. Is this r/boring?

Darn, I wanted them to go with my idea of upgrading the town's name to Ipv6swich

      That's "Ipv6switch" with a T, I think.

The title is the wrong way around.

Fix: "Zelda level modelled after town of Ipswich". And it's not even playable...
  • The town isn't based off of a level in Zelda. They simply used Zelda graphics, handheld or A Link to the Past graphics from the looks of it. Neat I guess, but not nearly as neat as if they'd modeled it after an original Zelda temple or something. Maybe not a water temple, if the fans are anything like my friends they wouldn't make it out without calling me first.
    • Yeah, the online guide/map thingie is styled after Zeld gfx, we get it. It is a cute little widget. Too bad the /. headline is so damaged.

the trees are zelda style. but otherwise it looks a bit generic.

(oh and a zelda: a link to the past is a zelda..)

  • Well I think we all agree that this story was a massive dissapointment. Does anybody know about a level from any videogame reproduced in real life?
  • ... here [switchfringe.co.uk]

Shame their web UI is stuck in the 1990's along with their mapping technology.

  • Great, I unwittingly clicked on a link to facebook from the office. I can't wait to explain this in triplicate to IT Security. Can we label these links better?

Can we label these links better?

The "https://www.facebook.com" in the URL didn't give it away?

Never click on links without looking at where they go, especially on slashdot.
In addition, go to tinyurl.com, click on "Preview Feature", and enable preview. Change any tinyurl links to preview.tinyurl.com (the preview cookie doesn't always work).

      • So if Slashdot posts a link to hardcore porn, it's my fault that I clicked on it thinking that link would be work safe? Slashdot is dominated by people who work in IT, if it's users can't trust the site to post only work safe links, they're going to lose a lot of traffic that their paying advertisers are targeting. Other "work safe" news sites avoid directly linking to social websites without explicitly saying so for this exact reason.

  • The town is a pit of despair. I sincerely hope, for all your sakes, that this does NOT put Ipswich "on the map". FFS, this place has only just made it to the 20th C (rough end of).

God help anyone who mentions Adastral Park, because I won't hold back.
