Game Characters Controlled By Player's Emotions 44

vrml (3027321) writes As the player feels inner anger rising, the in-game character gets angry too and starts shouting and smashing things. Then, the player relaxes and the game character calms down and smiles. This is the kind of game control supported by a system demonstrated in a video released today by the Human-Computer Interaction Lab of the University of Udine. The system detects player's emotional state by using physiological sensors to measure player's skin conductance, facial muscles activity and cardiac parameters. It has been used to build gamified relaxation training and stress inoculation training applications.

Game Characters Controlled By Player's Emotions

  • No wonder Clippy just tried to kill me

  • I can't speak for everyone, but when I videogame, I don't want to have to get all emotional every time. Sometimes I'd like to just zone out completely oblivious to everything, while drool spills out of my mouth.

And on the off chance that I am particularly emotional, I would usually rather not share that with people.

The angrier you get, the lousier your aim gets and the easier you get fatigued. Would sure cut down a lot of the griefing.

    • Except that griefers don't get angry. Gamers like me get angry because we spend what little free-time we have trying to play a relaxing game of shoot-aliens-in-the-face, but some 14-year old learned to walk through walls and have unlimited grenade launcher ammo. If my character was controlled by my emotions, he/she would probably just sit in the middle of the floor and cry uncontrollably before pulling the pin. I play games to NOT be that person. This is a bad idea.
  • I'm sure we will use this technology wisely.

  • This game must make you angry and frustrated in order to use the functionality.

Please list out a list of activities that this game has to achieve the anger?
  • Ever read Signal to Noise?
  • My games will know when I'm angry the good old fashioned way -- by finding themselves smashed and/or thrown out a window.

  • When I play, I'm not typically emotional over the game play, I get emotional over game bugs. Why in hell do I want my character ranting about in a safehouse because I can't access my account info? My emotions have not a thing to do with what my toon would be feeling if it were a person so this seems pretty worthless.

And yeah, I want a bunch of friggin' stickers all over my face. The video sort of reminded me of "World of World of Warcraft".

    • That's a good point. An avatar is not a reflection of yourself, it's an escape from yourself, The person controlling the avatar is playing the role of god in a different universe, which is why I think games like the sims were/are enormously popular. OTOH the type of feedback they are talking about has been shown to be useful in modifying "aberrant behaviour" in a clinical setting, such as anger/stress management, etc.

To summarise, adding this kind of equipment to a video game for entertainment is like ad
  • ... the code in codependent.

  • There are more dimensions to emotions than just Relaxed vs. Angry. For it to be useful for something other than biofeedback this system will need to distinguish Relaxed from other states like Flow, Focused, or Bored and also distinguish Angry from Adrenaline Rushed, or Jubilant, or even Sexually Excited.

FTA, it sounds to me that this system would confuse many different emotions, so unless a player has a fetish for watching a cartoon avatar smash things, it will be just another footnote laboratory novelty.

You mean I’ve got to be wired into a polygraph machine? They can't tell by how hard I'm hammering on the joystick, and how loud I'm yelling into the mic?

  • Does anyone remember that old game: "Bureaucracy"? The aim was too keep your blood pressure low enough not to have a stroke and die while dealing with everyday issues. Maybe a remake with this sort of controller is in order, then it could measure your real blood pressure.

Then, maybe, someone can use the measurements as evidence in a suit against... well basically every cable, internet, or phone company, building contractors, and government institution.

  • I think that's just creepy.
  • I will code micro-transaction based game, where rage is tied to paying. This way suckers^H^H^H^H customers will be raging and paying and raging and paying. I will be rich!
