Nintendo To Announce Virtual Boy 2 68

SlappingOysters writes Nintendo has officially unveiled the development of its next home console, codenamed the NX. This article at finder puts forward the case that Nintendo will be stepping back into the virtual realty game with a follow-up to its ill-fated 1995 peripheral, the Virtual Boy. It would be going head-to-head with the Vive, Project Morpheus and the much-rumoured, not yet announced, Microsoft VR unit.

My BS meter is going off pretty hard on this one.

Any harder than it went off for the similar Nintendo On hoax [youtube.com]?

  • Youngsters will have never heard of a "Virtual Boy" and will be confused by the name while old fogies (like myself) will remember just how bad the Virtual Boy was and make sure to steer clear of the "Virtual Boy 2".

Actually no, they didn't announce a damn thing you completely inaccurate headline and summary. They very well might but that is just one article speculating at what they might announce based on what other companies are doing.

It gets better. At the end, the author mentions, "Here I come, Hyrule!" To me, that implies nostalgic reflection on the many fond hours of gameplay he had playing a Zelda game on his original Virtual Boy. Only one problem: Nintendo never released a Zelda game for the Virtual Boy [wikipedia.org].

Well that makes two people - you and I - who actually chose to RTFA. You should know by now that such choices are strictly taboo around here - and completely forbidden for the "editors" who select the front page material. Hell, I'm surprised the front page didn't link to goatse or foxnews instead.

    • Had they said nothing up until the moment of an actual announcement, we'd all have laughed out loud (spelled out because many of us literally would) at ourselves for not seeing it coming.
    • Yeah, the first problem is that this is just baseless speculation.

The _second_ problem is that I made the same baseless speculation two days ago [slashdot.org] and no one cared then, so it's amusing that someone else got front page news for saying the same thing. I guess the problem is that I had my tongue in my cheek while these guys are (at least pretending to be) serious about it?

I knew the summary was full of baloney when they called the Virtual Boy an ill-fated "peripheral". A mouse or an add-on device is a "peripheral". Virtual Boy was not a hardware add on to something, it was a full blown console in and of itself (I still own one).

Posting an article's baseless speculation about what an announcement means takes away all the fun of letting us baselessly speculate about what an announcement means.

The article is pure speculation, this story has no reason being here, and the title is clickbait.

Is this really what Slashdot is coming to? The linked post is purely speculation with no evidence other than what other companies are doing, which has never been a major motivator for Nintendo. The title presents it as fact. Come on guys, hold stuff to a higher standard than this garbage, don't turn into Buzzfeed or Gawker.

Should read, "Jackass shockjock makes up fantasy about Nintendo re-releasing Virtual Boy"

  • I'd be really surprised if Nintendo names a VR headset after their failed 3D console.
  • http://www.eurogamer.net/artic... [eurogamer.net] UPDATE: Here's Iwata's quote on the NX, translated officially by Nintendo: As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename "NX". It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Also, Iwata said Nintendo's new membership servi

This is just some clickbait headline, the entire thing is speculation, apart from the fact that Nintendo announced a codename NX for their next hardware. You seriously think Nintendo would follow up with something called the "Virtual Boy 2" with the bad impression the first one left? The "Virtual Boy" name is worth nothing right now. They won't even bring its games to Virtual Console on 3DS even though that makes so much sense it's crazy.
  • "This article at finder puts forward the case that Nintendo will be stepping back into the virtual realty game ..."

I suppose property values are prohibitively expensive.
  • Every mega corporation announcing a serious VR headset is good for two reasons. One, it devalues Oculus Rift's purchase by Facebook and anything that stops that project or loses Facebook money is very positive. They need to go out of business and soon. Second, it creates legitimate competition that will drive down prices. The initial prices for the Oculus put is straight on the Segway path. Now I might be able to get a good VR device for under the cost of a gaming console.
  • Site i never heard of knows about next Nintendo console, right.

And they are wrong, because the home consoles nintendo make are excellent for multiplayer games (mario cart/party, even the new mario world etc). That wouldn't work so well with VR, which is more of a single player activity right now (unless you go online, but then you are still alone in your room).
