Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Arrives Amid China Controversy

The latest Call Of Duty (CoD) game has been released, amid calls to boycott its publisher's products. From a report: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is the sixteenth major title in the series, which is one of the best-selling games franchises of all time. Activision Blizzard has faced criticism for punishing an e-sports competitor who voiced support for the Hong Kong protests at another game's event. Some fans said they had cancelled their pre-orders of CoD as a consequence. But industry watchers still expect the title to be one of the year's biggest earners. "Call of Duty remains Activision's biggest AAA [large budget] game franchise and is key to the company's annual performance and overall commercial targets," said Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at the IHS Markit consultancy.

I am on board with Hong Kong. They were originally protesting in the streets day and night for weeks on end because Carrie Lam wanted to pass a bill that allowed extradition of Hong Kong Citizens to mainland China. (READ: China wanted Carrie Lam to pass a a bill.)

Eventually Lam said they weren't going to attempt to pass the bill. The protesters continued because she didn't say that she wouldn't attempt to bring it up later down the road. I get it.

The Chinese regime that makes this an issue still being in power. The brutal attacks against the protestors. The genocide, torture, murder for organs, and totalitarianism in their country? You know, free speech and expression, democracy aka basic human rights.

Ditto. Activision was already on my shit list, and now Blizzard pulls their China shit. It's unfortunate that Blizzard values customers who happen to live in an authoritarian regime more than mine. Shame, cause this looks like the first CoD worth playing in a loooong time.

Came out in 2011, I've bought all the CoD and Black Ops since then. None have worked for me, especially Black Ops.

That said, the number of cheaters in MW3 is just ridiculous. It's too bad MW peaked at MW3, and I haven't liked any COD games past that, nor any Black Ops games.

Last black friday I bought a PS4, it came with Black Ops something. Spent a week or so playing it, then not so much. Fortnight was much more fun. But I realized luck was a bigger component than skill and gave up on it.

It probably says you're getting older. I keep buying all these new games playing them for an hour and then going back to the same old games. At a certain point old and familiar > new and hot.

I like the irony of the game's [wikipedia.org] description in Wikipedia:

"Modern Warfare's single-player campaign will focus on realism and feature tactically-based moral choices whereupon the player is evaluated and assigned a score at the end of each level ..."

So do players now get the chance to make a real world moral choice, to play or not to play? That is the question.

Depends. If you are Chinese your score does down for taking a position in support of your fellow citizens. Your score goes up in the US if you refuse to play in support of the citizens of China.

Wow. 16th. I haven't played since BlaOps. And that was the 7th.
That last good one was MW4. The last decent ones were MW2 and BlaOps.

This series needs to go away for like 5 years.
