NPD's Best-Selling Games of the Decade Charts 'Call of Duty' Domination (engadget.com) 16

The NPD group has rounded up sales stats for the last month, but with the flip from 2019 to 2020 it is also listing some of the best sellers over the last ten years. From a report: Grand Theft Auto V is the best selling game across all platforms and outlets tracked from 2010 through the end of 2019, but otherwise the top ten is dominated by the Call of Duty series, with Red Dead Redemption at number 7 and Minecraft at number 10 as the only other titles.

1. Grand Theft Auto V
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
4. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops III

  • I wonder how those stats would look if they included free-to-play console games.

Would Apex and Fortnite top the list as the do highest grossing?

    • Indeed, and this is only public stats. Who knows how much money Valve is rolling with DotA 2, and LoL has to also been making bank.
  • First-person shooters took over the market, which in turns means all companies made first-person shooters in order to compete, which explains why 99% of the games are crap.

First person shooters appeal to the failed jock strap douche crowd rather than mainly just geeks and nerds. They are pretty dumbed down games not much thought required and well it appeals to the dumb down human brigade, IQs 110 and lower, numbers are what numbers are there are a whole bunch more failed jock strap douches sub 110 then there are geeks and nerds plus 110 where other games dominate RPGs and Strategy games. Geeks and nerds also play first person shooters and of course enjoy outsmarting the faile

  • There was a lot of hype, but I'm not sure what people see in that game. I spent almost two hours at the beginning of the game walking slowly through the snow or on horseback, doing pretty much nothing, following an AI some of the time. There was one short gun battle. At that point the return window was almost up so I just got a refund. What a disappointment.

I played a few Call of Duty games once upon a time. I wasn't impressed. The campaigns are... all right, I guess. Press F to pay respects may be a meme, but it's not like scenes like that were bad. Multiplayer's slow though, even compared to something like Halo, let alone arena shooters like Quake or UT. TF2 was way more fun, though I think Orange Box was before 2010 so it's probably out of the drawing. Didn't like Overwatch, felt like the worst elements of TF2 combined with the worst elements of MOBAs. There haven't really been any shooters in the past ten years I really liked, but maybe I'm just losing my interest in the genre. Friends liked Tribes: Ascend, but I wasn't huge on that, either.

Wasn't a fan of GTA5 either. I dunno, all GTA games kind of feel the same to me. I really loved GTA3 back when it first came out, then Vice City and San Andreas were pretty good too, but by then I think I was just sick of the formula. It's like the Assassins Creed franchise, some ideas just get boring if you keep rehashing them. I guess a lot of people disagree with me considering how popular those two franchises are, though.

I think FF14 and Civ5 were probably my favorite games of the decades, or at least the ones I got the most time played out of. New Vegas for sure if that was in the 2010-2020 era, New Vegas was fantastic. Disco Elysium recently was pretty good, kind of experimental considering how little gameplay there was but it paid off IMO.
  • I can't believe the only racing game in the top 20 was Mario Kart fer crissake. I thought for sure one of the games from the "Dirt" series (Codemasters) would make the list.
  • That Black Ops-4 50GB day-one update soured me on that franchise for the foreseeable future. How can any game possibly make it to market that incomplete?
  • They weren't in first place. And as we all know, Second place is just the first loser. [goodreads.com]
  • Loved MW2 multi-player, but the cheaters ruined it. Really liked MW3 multi-player, but the cheaters ruined it. Never got into any MW games after 3, they seemed to prioritize twitch speed over strategy and tactics. That whole jumping around and bouncing off buildings? Yeah, no.

The only Black Ops I got into was the zombie mode. I think it was zombies, it's been a decade or more. Never liked the BOPs gameplay.

IMHO, they peaked at MW2.5. MW3 had really bad networking issues that MW2 didn't have. B
